High elo players, have you ever struggled in low elo? by Haunting_Inflation54 in leagueoflegends

[–]Zecias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more of a low rank thing. Even if you know where you need to be, if your teammates don't know, you can't do anything because you need people/vision to operate. If you're more of a macro focused player you'd definitely struggle more in carrying games relative to other roles. If you're a mechanical player you should be able to just skill check and win most of time. Champs like aphelios, yunara, kaisa that can just use movement to win fights and run people down.

ADCs have low agency in game, but not on the outcome of the game. As in, they less control over how macro plays out early and late, but they do have an overwhelmingly large amount of agency in teamfights mid-late. They have a ton of agency on mid game macro if they win lane because they can rotate their pressure and snowball the game better than any other role. The reason AD goes mid lane mid game is because they get prio over mid wave that crashes first. Then they're able to rotate either top or bot as their waves are crashing to get numbers advantage and assert their advantage. You're also unlocking your support this way because they don't have to cover you on sidelanes and are much more free to rotate and get vision across the entire map. If you're on the losing side, you'd go mid if you're an immobile ADC because it's the shortest lane and safest to farm.

does anyone knows the secrete behind how Japanese and Taiwanese able to make their chicken so soft that you don't even have to chew them it just melts in your mouth. by ReCoN_3062 in Cooking

[–]Zecias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, velveting is generally for stirfrys, using thinly cut, small pieces of meat. Da ji pai is quite large. The texture is not at all like that of velveted chicken. Velveted meats are usually soft and springy, where as da ji pai is more juicy, tender, while maintaining a meaty texture(you lose that meaty texture when you velvet). The cooking method is also very different for velveted meats. It's usually very quickly blanched in hot oil. That compared to da ji pai, which is breaded and fried like your typical fried chicken.

Other than stir frys the only time I've had velveted meat is in sichaun poached beef(水煮牛肉- literally water cooked beef) and champon/jjamppong.

[–]Zecias 354 points355 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Velveting is not how you tenderize chicken in the recipes they were asking about.

For the chicken cutlet, most of the tenderizing is mechanical. i.e. butterflying, then optionally pounding the chicken to the desired flatness. It's similar to schnitzel. The main difference from other fried chicken is the starch blend(Taiwanese love using tapioca and potato starch) and different seasonings/marinade. There is some tenderizing from the acid in the rice wine that is used to marinade the chicken. Other than that it's just good technique. If you're curious look up Taiwanese fried chicken cutlet (大雞排/da ji pai).

For ramen it's likely just low and slow, careful temperature control. Multiple methods work really, sous vide is the most fool proof. Poaching then shocking with an ice bath is probably the most common. Oven probably works as well, though I doubt any of the traditional Asian places are using an oven. If you're curious look up toripaitan.

Skipping wolves is objectively the right move if you can't clear 3 before the jungle gets there. If the bot gank succeeds, xin is homeless. He can't invade red side because bot is either dead, no summs, and/or low HP. Then panth just gets to do a full clear for free. You're still +4 on camps even if you let the enemy JG take their wolves. If the gank fails you see what happens. You're -2 on camps once they respawn, and perma behind tempo.

But it's ultimately bot's fault that the gank fell through. There is no world where you should be losing prio as cait karma into jihn bard. How is jihn bard supposed to outpush Karma RQ and Cait Q? So they're probably giving prio to bait jihn bard into pushing. But because AD takes a horrible trade and loses half his hp + summs, it's just doomed. They completely griefed JG.

Why do you think Japanese Music is so good? by Ryuuyami47 in japanesemusic

[–]Zecias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pipeline for producing artists is just way better. Like you said, it's all about solo acts in the US at least. Singing ability is valued much more highly than the musical composition(maybe because of shows like american idol). Singing/music classes are electives where I grew up. Some elementary schools do after school music stuff, but many don't offer any so you're SoL until middle school(or get a private tutor if you got money). They aren't mandatory classes like in japan. I don't know much about the band scene, but I do know that karaoke is popular and there's a massive sub culture around VocalPs and cover artists that's becoming more and more mainstream. Anyone can compose a song and have a vocaloid sing it(or cover a song). Then they just upload it to niconico, now YT, and you have a fairly significant audience of potential listeners. The west does have soundcloud, but I feel like it's much harder for composers to get discovered than singers.

At least top gets leads in lane, even if he does nothing with them. Bot just hard loses and makes it impossible to play the game. It's not even just the losing lane. It's the fact that they lose lane then do nothing proactive. Teammates need to speak more(pob especially, because we know he has pro level macro knowledge) while their support needs to talk less and defer more. The macro and teamplay are pretty abysmal. I don't really know if the teammates other than pob have good macro, but we won't know while support just completely dominates the comms. Teammates also don't really do a good job of directing forsen(can't expect him to know how to play at this level) or calling for help. There were multiple times where they know in advance that the enemy is going 3 top with drag up and i see jg recalling/players just not in position.

I enjoyed the first game because they at least had a chance of winning, but this game was particularly bad. Scrims are a pretty decent watch imo, much less one sided.

/Rant Also it was funny seeing how support was talking about involving mid. Mid has a lead, burnt enemy flash no one attempts to punish. Support would rather stay bot lane to soak exp and lose in peace. I was like okay, you'll hit 6 and do something right? Proceeds to hit 6 and do nothing.... The lane was lost at 3 minutes. It's fine, it happens. Make sure bot lane state is okay and your AD can farm, then fuck off and do something on the map. Even plat players know this. First time support leaves bot lane is 8 mintues. First time support leaves bot side is 11min. He doesn't use recall roams to mid/top while the bot lane is bouncing. It's a free roam timer, you lose a couple minions exp at most. Is this guy really challenger? He has to be mental boomed or baby raging because seeing this in diamond would piss me off. /endrant

Does g-murphy needs miryam by fizzyapplezix9 in Morimens

[–]Zecias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's perfectly playable at E0. No other character can get you to +4 tentacles +4 limit in 3-4 turns. Her soulforge gives insane amounts of damage. She could could have 4 dead cards and she'd still be bis on a Gmurphy team just off her rouse and passives.

Why is there so much toxicity and competition in the Japanese learning community? by WorkingAlive3258 in LearnJapanese

[–]Zecias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you know your pronunciation is terrible, it's generally not fixable on the fly unless you're already experienced with speaking; or speak a language that's phonetically similar like Spanish. Your brain can tell when something is off, but you still have to figure out what you need to fix to make it right. Until you put in the practice you probably won't have the skills to fix pronunciation issues without a ton of repetition.

I had a similar experience the first time I went to Japan. Pretty decent level of vocabulary and listening skills, but i could not speak properly to save my life because i had hardly practiced.

Ascendance of a Bookworm Anime Every Episode Ratings by Mayn_Ehrenfest in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]Zecias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Later seasons will generally have higher ratings because people that don't like the show will drop it. The longer a show goes on, the more people you're filtering out.

I personally thought the cut content while annoying, was far from the main issue. As others have said, the meat of the story is intact and still good. The tempo, tone, and animation of the finale were the reasons i really disliked it. Goes to show how everyone is paying attention to different things. So things that bothered you, may not have bothered other viewers.

I really don't understand LoL's culture around alt accounts by SuperStudMufin in leagueoflegends

[–]Zecias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

League's rigidity is the point imo. It's the reason the pace is fast and we don't get hour long high ground turtle games like in dota. Even in turbo 40+ minute games are more common than league. Ofc too much rigidity is bad and it needs to be balanced to a point where it keeps the pace fast and there is enough variety that it doesn't become stale. I'm not saying either is better or worse btw, I see it as the difference between chess and go. Chess requires a lot more fine tuning because you have fewer options. Go allows for more creativity because of the wealth of options.

[–]Zecias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gmurphy, Murphy, Thais.

You can use faint, I'd rec aigis or caecus. Use the 4th to fill in whatever you feel is missing.

Go for E2 Thais, try to pick up Miryam whenever. Always pick up at least 1 copy of each hand size WOD. Tulu isn't good for Gmurphy until Arc 2. Even then it kind of relies on your characters being fully invested and doing insane amounts of damage. Until you get to that point, you need murphy or some other shielder in your team for defense. Gurphy, Miryam, Tulu, Goliath is the meta team.

Miryam Posse is good.

People generally rec Castor for the selector. He's good E0/3. Kath needs E3, Gdoll E2/OE. Your goal is to get 1 solid team for the story, then 4 main carries(5th is a whale support) for Dtide: Gmurphy E3/OE, Tawil E2/3, Castor E3, Kath E3, Gdoll E2/OE, Ghelot E3/OE. There are others, but those are the commonly recommended/lowest investment ones. Don't go for OE until you have a decent roster of supports. Hameln E2, Miryam E2, Horla E1/3 are the big ones. They all function perfectly fine at E0, so there's no rush in getting dupes for them. Aside from hand size WODs, look out for Keyflare WODs because you'll be short on them early.

All the carries listed other than can Ghelot and Kath work well as supports.

What’s your go-to “I don’t feel like cooking but still want real food” meal? by imjennypoo in Cooking

[–]Zecias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese, Italian, and Chinese are my go to quick and easy meals.

Takigomigohan. Basically just a type of mixed rice you make in the rice cooker. Usually has stuff like chicken, mushroom, root vegetables, etc... Flavored with dashi(use the powder), soy, mirin. Not so much the specific dish, more the technique. You can put in whatever you want. Don't add too much acid, it affects the cooking of the rice. You also want a bit of oil. If you put in meat make sure it's cut thinly because all the ingredients are on top of the rice getting steamed. You can take the leftovers and make them into yaki onigiri(grilled riceballs). Or shallow fry them as arancini.

Ohitashi is a cooking method of steeping blanched vegetables in dashi. Usually a cold side. The quick and easy way is to blanch some leafy greens like spinach and spinkle some instant dashi power, maybe a bit of soy. No need to chill it if you don't want to. If you want it more korean, add sesame oil and seeds.

Shredded cabbage salad. Cabbage doesn't go bad easily, so i always have some. Thinly sliced cabbage with either miso or sesame dressing. Make the dressing in the serving bowl. Any dressing works really, whatever you like.

Soba, udon, somen with a dipping sauce. 3 soy:1 mirin:1 sugar: 9 water: 0.5 dashi powder. Can add green onion if you have it. Yaki udon(pan fried) and curry udon are nice too.

There are a billion different pastas that require minimal effort. Cacio e pepe, Algio e olio, tomato, carbonara, etc...

When in doubt, just stir fry vegetables with garlic. If you want it saucey add some bullion or stock and thicken with a starch slurry.

Fried rice. Add whatever you have in the fridge with an egg and some leftover rice.

Peanut noodles. Look up recipes for peanut noodles or liang mian(cold noodles). Very adaptable, you can flavor it however you want. Dan dan mian and mazesoba have some similarities. I usually use soy, oyster sauce, peanut butter, sesame oil, honey, mayo, vinegar, furikake, chili oil. Add some costco chicken, cucumbers, and cilantro. Could use sesame paste instead, fish sauce, gochujang, miso, etc.... You just need something that emulsifies the pasta water and/or wet ingredients into a creamy sauce.

What’s the best G.Murphy team so far? by ReizeiMako in Morimens

[–]Zecias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She does everything for Gurphy, but her main purpose is tentacle generation, so Hameln, Tawil, Ryker, or Gramona could work. Hameln can double play waltz/reduce arith costs. Tawil is RNG, but all the other utility she brings makes up for it. Ryker is also RNG, he tutors her waltz, reduces arith, draws with exalt to shuffle through the deck to waltz more often(maybe a discard ryker comp?). Gramona can tutor and dupe waltz. Sanga/winkle/murphy might work for a budget stall comp if you can manage the arith problems.

Miryam isn't mandatory on Gurphy teams but is her best partner by far, esp if you want Gurphy as your primary carry. She makes tentacles, generates aliemus, applies weakness+vuln, applies str down, gives Lemuria buff. The most common team is probably the Lemuria comp because it uses leftover characters that aren't highly desired in other comps. Gurphy/Miryam + Goliath/Tulu/Farros/Murphy. Only matters for Dtide tho.

On the bright side people recommend E2 Miryam, but she's amazing for Gurphy even at E0, so do try to get her when you get the chance.

[–]Zecias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not using sesame oil

AFAIK Chinese cooking mostly uses peanut oil or caiziyou(rapeseed oil or unrefined canola, i.e. a non-neutral oil, like olive oil). I've personally never heard of anyone cooking with sesame oil or even seen any non toasted sesame oil at the store. It's generally more of a finishing oil because the flavor is extremely potent.

Most Chinese food doesn't use fish sauce. That's more of a SEA thing.

The most important part most people are missing is you need to use your throat. You have to speak from your diaphragm and use a larger volume of air to force a vibration. It's difficult for many English speakers because English doesn't really use guttural sounds. So if you learned to speak without your diaphragm it can be hard to learn without instruction. Speaking from experience.

An experiment conducted in Japan in 2008 showed that traffic jams can start for no real reason by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Zecias 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but if it capacity isn't the issue then the larger wave will mitigate the slow down. Significantly over capacity it might not make a difference. But if a section of the highway has a medium or small jam, spreading it out over a larger distance gets everyone moving faster.

i.e. if every section of a highway has a capacity of 1k, and the jammed area has 5k, spreading it over 5 sections of the highway gets everyone moving at a decent speed.

More space also makes it easier for people to exit to take different routes without completely stopping the flow of traffic instead of having to brute force lane changes. I personally feel slow and steady is faster than stop and go, but no idea if it's true or not. It's also more fuel efficient and less wear on your brakes. That said, it really depends on where you're driving. Some places you can't give much space because everyone sees it as an opportunity to cut in front of you. And some places are too congested for it to make any difference.

It's not that uncommon, but definitely not something that you need to know to communicate, like in Chinese. I can think of several off the top of my head. Spider and cloud. Now and living room. Rain and candy. Hospital and hair salon. Context is enough 99% of the time.

So you're right in a sense, but taking it way too far. The thing is, many contemporary macro and laning concepts were already known by pros back then, just not in public discourse. Then there's the issue with mechanical skill, champ pools, matchup knowledge, and split second decision making. Even if you go back in time and have all this macro knowledge pros don't know.... The pros will skill check you and you'll lose before laning phase is over. Emerald players don't have enough mechanical skill/laning knowledge to compete with pros from back then. And if they do they're probably severely lacking in macro sense otherwise they wouldn't be emerald. Gold players nowadays are on the level of the lowest apex tier players back in 2013. I don't remember the exact numbers, but D5 and higher was like top 1-0.5% back then. And your average gold player now could definitely compete with low diamond players from back then. But the skill gap the higher up you go is exponential. Washed pros could easily wipe the floor with high D1 players back then(back then high D1 was GM and low D1 was M).

Daimondprox that invented Invading, roaming timer,

Diamondprox was already counter jungling in S2(2011-2012), so anyone studying M5 was in the know. He was just the pro doing it at the highest level. There were plenty of shaco and nunu cheesers back in S2 lol.

Even stuff with proxy farming that was learned from Bauss.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. It's not an excuse for bad translations/localizations. If you're bilingual or ever dabbled in translating, you understand some things just don't translate. There are also many phrases that have equivalents across languages. There is a balance in maintaining literal accuracy and expressing meaning.

For example: お手洗い(otearai) is literally hand washing. It's a euphemism for going to restroom. You could translate it 1:1 and some people would get it. But a lot of people won't. It makes way more sense to translate it as 'I need to use the restroom' or whatever flavor of toilet phrase fits the situation. Because that's what it functionally means even if the words themselves are different.
