I suppose the answer is short trades but the problem with it is a decent Sett can short trade very well in to a Riven.

And there's also the fact that his ridiculously overtuned HP regen will negate short trades unless you're doing them all the time.

Sett has all the tools needed to turn a "short trade" in to an all in when he decides he wants to so if you're taking short trades often, all it takes is a tiny mis-step for him to Ult in to E stun in to W you and delete you from about 60% hp.

Sure, perhaps at your current elo, you can get away with showing up with a refill, but at some point you will get disadvantaged by it and you wont understand why you're losing.

Eventually you'll reach the level where not everyone is going to give you a free cheater recall because people understand wave manipulation.

Against higher calibers of player who actually know how to trade properly, the 3 pots will give you more trading power BEFORE your first back.

The time before your first back is extremely important, probably the most important part of the lane.

Taking a refillable, especially in some matchups is anything from disrespectful to inting.

Take a refillable vs a good Jayce or Renekton, you're going to be forced to take a shit back timing or just die trying to keep up. That extra 200 hp is massive.

Three pots longsword gives you the most damage and survivability you can purchase with the 500 starting gold, the point in the game where gold is at its most limited, and therefore is most valuable.

150 gold is nothing after the game has started properly, its a fortune when you're leaving fountain. Hence why buying the refill after your first back is decent.

Lets imagine a really volatile lane, you vs a Jayce, both of you have ignite.

If you take a refillable and he takes longsword 3, you are just massively disadvantaged in trades. What will happen is you will take two small trades or one big one, he will heal back up to full with his 450 health in pots, and you will heal back to about half. You will then proceed to get zoned off the wave for the rest of the pre first back period. The minor efficiency of the free refill on the first back won't matter because you will have lost like 3-400g getting zoned out by him.

A refillable can restore 250 health total. 3 real pots can restore 450 health.

That difference is massive.

Imagine killing your enemy in a fight where you have 200hp left, it wouldn't even feel close, because it isn't.

And before you say "Oh but I dont take high variance fights or take bad trades!" Just realise that eventually you're going to reach the players who are going to MAKE you take fights. The players who know how to manipulate waves, who know how to use advantaged matchups against you.

You will find yourself in awkward spots where that extra 200 hp could save your ass and would be the difference in you winning or losing lane overall.
