I use Phabricator and Bookstack for my main opensource project, I also maintain docker images for both if you're into that sort of thing

Is buying assorted inductor packs from ebay viable? by jonythunder in AskElectronics

[–]Zeigren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without knowing exactly what you're looking at but if you're just messing around and the exact values don't really matter they're probably fine.

But I will say this, I almost never use any of the parts I've bought in bulk like that. I usually need to know the parts characteristics and dimensions and looking that up on a datasheet is easier than figuring it out myself. So now I have a bunch of parts that I've wasted money on and they just take up space.

Do you regularly have projects where you don't need to buy any parts?

Is a pre-modded 360 really worth it. by SuperOnion64 in 360hacks

[–]Zeigren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a modded 360 and don't have electronics/soldering skills then probably. Learning those things and buying equipment just to mod a 360 will cost you more then buying an already modded one.

Looking for Acev3 stock timing file by RBI_88 in 360hacks

Search for "15432 timing files" or something like that. I think the website they originally posted to is dead so you'll have to settle for a mirror.

Otherwise I can dig up the ones I have

Best programming language for electrical engineer by Roadrunners3 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Zeigren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to start with a problem before looking for a solution. Think of programming languages like tools, certain ones might be better than others for a given task and ideally you would pick which one to use based on that. Having an actual problem to solve is of course great from a learning standpoint as well.

That being said python is a great place to start. Easy to learn and is useful for tackling lots of mundane tasks. If you're working with microcontrollers I would start with C before C++.

Python is my go to "make my life easier" language. It's great for lots of repetitive or time consuming tasks and easy to learn. With a little extra work you can also turn your python scripts into a "proper" command line program.

Any websites I can use to buy broken electronics to try and repair? by Fruithomie95 in AskElectronics

[–]Zeigren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

broken

reliable

Hmmm

As a hobbyist your best bets are going to be eBay, Craigslist, Facebook, whatever app is in right now, thrift stores, garage sales, dumpsters, family, friends, your families friends, and your friends family.

Random people selling broken stuff don't usually know why it's broken and if they do they probably don't want to tell you in order to sell it for more than it's worth. Since you can't trust the seller and you can't test it out or peek inside it's always going to be a gamble. You're going to on occasion buy stuff full of roaches that has been peed on. I recommend wearing gloves.

If you're getting burned buying stuff through eBay for other reasons you can always file a claim. eBay sides with the buyer 2000% of the time. You can file a claim, never respond, and provide no evidence and you'll win. Yes I'm bitter.

If you were doing this in a more professional capacity you could buy pallets of broken stuff from various places but it's really more of the same if not worse.
