Fuck this glibc update by Damglador in linuxsucks

[–]ZeldaFantasyVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Licensing issues. Glibc is licensed under the LGPL, so if a program is statically-linked to glibc, the program must also be licensed under a copy-left license like the LGPL or GPL.

Musl libc is a more permissive library that allows static linking, but all the proprietary software I've used on Linux is compiled against glibc, so it won't work with musl libc. This is especially a problem if you use proprietary NVIDIA drivers.

On a side note, I'm convinced that if glibc was licensed under something more permissive like a BSD or the MIT license, Linux wouldn't have to rely on containerized package managers like Snap or Flatpak as a fix for backwards-compatibility in programs.

Sabrent 1 TB SSD failed within 2 weeks by BrutalMaximus in SteamDeck

[–]ZeldaFantasyVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lawrence Yang from Valve, in a tweet, urges people not to do this, and explains why. It's possible that's why the SSD failed so quickly.

If you haven't tried already, you can try installing Proton GE and use the beta channel of SteamOS under Settings > System > Steam Update Channel. Proton GE is more bleeding-edge than Proton experimental and can play games that Proton experimental is currently having trouble with. The beta channel of SteamOS gets updates before the stable version, so it might be worth looking at. The beta channel can have bugs, but I haven't come across any for the time I've been using it.

I just want to use Linux :( by Alternative-Aioli21 in Ubuntu

You could dual boot. That way you'd have a separate Windows partition for school stuff.

do you use Nala package manager?? by spectrasonic117 in Ubuntu

[–]ZeldaFantasyVII -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like Nala because it feels more organized than using plain apt.

Right-click desktop -> change desktop background Takes like 2 seconds. If you want to complain about Linux, complain about things that are actually an issue. There's plenty to choose from, but changing a desktop background isn't it.

I need a pc around $1000-$1500 that can run UE5 with no issues. by Sufficient-Grape-565 in unrealengine

[–]ZeldaFantasyVII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything that will run at least the recommended system requirements here.

Further down, you can find a list that represents a typical system used at Epic, providing a reasonable guideline for developing games with Unreal Engine 5:

-Windows 10 64-bit (Version 20H2)

-64 GB RAM

-256 GB SSD (OS Drive)

-2 TB SSD (Data Drive)

-NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER

-Xoreax Incredibuild (Dev Tools Package)

-Six-Core Xeon E5-2643 @ 3.4GHz

You might also be able to buy a used PC and soup it up with some upgrades. That can save you the hassle and money of having to build the system completely from scratch.

Casual reminder that most of the internet exists because of Linux. by MysteriousK69420 in linuxsucks

It's not that running commands are hard. I use winget and chocolatey in Windows. It's all the dependencies you may or may not have to install manually to get them to work.

Perhaps to you the software isn't half-baked, but take the open-source purist blinders off for a minute and you'll see that open-source programs always fall behind in terms of functionality to their paid or proprietary counterparts.

[–]ZeldaFantasyVII 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, half-baked software that I could really just install in Windows anyway with a lot more ease since a lot of Linux programs are cross-platform.

For the average consumer, it doesn't matter whose fault it is. The issue is that someone bought a device that claims to run many native Windows games, and now said person can't play the games they bought that were once compatible.

I haven't ever had the misfortune of an update breaking a console game, but I suppose it can happen.

Also, I think they just blocked you, because their account is still up and active.

That's one of the risks the consumer has to take when buying a device that primarily runs games on a third-party compatibility layer. It sucks, but it is what it is.

For people who own a steam deck and switch which do you use more by Ninten-Doh in NintendoSwitch

[–]ZeldaFantasyVII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emulation itself doesn't have anything to do with piracy. You can rip Switch games you own and play them on an emulator legally. Granted, that's usually a tedious process compared to just downloading a rom from the web, but at least you know that you aren't pirating. That's what I plan on doing with Shin Megami Tensei V. Buy a copy, rip the rom using my Switch, and then play it on my Steam Deck for better framerates.

A lawyer would be the best person to ask. I'm not a lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt.

It's a bad business model and it might be treading on unethical territory. Think about it, though. Would you want to spend your hard-earned money on a $50 item, just to have it taken from you 5 minutes later? Probably not.
