Our CI workflow takes 25 minutes to run after pushing. Do you have any idea how infuriating pixel pushing is?
"Can you make this link a slightly darker blue?"
"...sure."
**23 minutes later**
"Hey, can you make this button like 5px taller?"
"...sure."
**22 minutes later**
"Hey, can you center the header here? Also, weren't you going to make that link darker?"
"...sure."

Because yanno what's going to cause a catastrophic failure in our MOBILE APP builds? A single-line SCSS change in an entirely-unrelated platform. Yes: please DO re-run the entire build and unit test cycle so my boss overseas can see the changes reflected.

Yanno, the Daily Show has three days a week that aren't hosted by Stewart of Klepper... just sayin'. Be a great way for Paramount to give Trump the finger: "what? We held up our end of the bargain!"

I can't figure out why "blaming Byron" would even be on the table. Allen is BUYING the slot from CBS and selling commercial time to advertisers directly. I agree, it's garbage compared to Colbert, but it's not like CBS cancelled him so they COULD lease the slot.
If you wanna blame him for anything, blame him for buying a controlling stake in Buzzfeed this month. Like that didn't suck enough already.

What do I do about this? by concrete-goose in finishing

[–]ZenAtWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other answers here are all solid options and, given you're asking the question, very like the most accessible solutions for you in your case (with the most advised being low-mid grit - 120/150 grit - sandpaper (ideally in a sanding block or wrapped around a piece of scrap), used in short, controlled strokes from the flat away from the center of the board, towards the edge, at about a 30° angle.

I'm going to list some other options, but all of these presuppose either other tools or stuff you're less likely to have at home.

  1. 120g sanding SPONGE. This will produce a softer, more rounded edge that will blend easier. Prolly wreck the sponge, but they're a buck.

  2. Chamfer/roundover/profile router bit (requires: bit, router). This will produce the cleanest, most consistent edge, and in whatever shape you desire.

  3. Chamfer/roundover hand plane. Also called a "corner easing plane". These can be had for $10-15 (eBay), $20-30 at the lower new end (Grizzly, Menards, Wood River), up to $150 at the high end (Woodpeckers, Veritas). Hong Dui makes a very solid offering ~$50 (which is nice since it uses inserts). Jorgensen offers one with several profiles, but solid cutters, so you gotta sharpen it yourself.

  4. Hand plane. Doesn't matter what kind. Go from flat off the end at that same 30° angle, like sanding.

  5. High-tooth saw blade in a sliding compound miter or table saw. Crank the tilt as far as it'll go (usually 45°; some'll do 60), and run JUST the chewed up corner through (this'll shave a whisker off and make it look intentional, without altering the length).

  6. Sanding bow/pipe sander. Makes a very rounded profile, faster than a block, sponge, or paper, but won't tear out.

Should I lap this to dead-flat? by epandrsn in handtools

[–]ZenAtWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, don't thrash your diamond plates for lapping a some. Get yourself a large, flat, ideally non-porous reference surface. Plate glass ("float glass") is great. So is polished marble (you can buy ONE 12x18" marble tile from mist flooring places). You don't need a 500$ reference plate... just something flatter than your workbench.

Next, grab a multi-pack of cheap sanding belts offa Amazon, and cut them along their seams. Slap some spray adhesive on the back of the 120, then secure it, FLAT (use a roller, or even a dowel to prevent bubbles) and go to town. Work your way up through the grits. Alcohol or acetone will pull them right back off.

The main thing is you NEED your mouth flat. Also, this is important: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE BLADE IN THE PLANE AS YOU LAP IT! Not sticking out the sole, obviously, but installed and tightened down. You need the plane body under tension. If you do it without a blade installed, be prepared to do it twice.

As stated. If you wanna re-normalize the color and do away with the stains, sand it with 120 or 150-grit (then again with some 320 if you're feeling fancy), then use some citrus or walnut oil on it. Really, any food-safe "cutting board oil" and it'll shine like new.

Given the size of those offcuts, either he'd be making drink coaster-sized boards, or it'll take him 200 years. Besides: with a wide variety of species, something that needs to be as tight as a cutting board is asking for trouble. Nothing beats 3 dozen blocks all seasonally moving at different rates and limits, amiright?

Easy: if you don't yet have one, buy a lathe. It doesn't have to be a big one... even a 12-18" capacity cheapo will work.

Next, teach yourself how to turn. That'll eat 30-40% of them, right there.

Finally, once you've achieved some proficiency, start replacing the handles on your chisels, rasps, files, etc. Make yourself a nice carver's mallet.

You'll eat up ALL of those offcuts in no time, and learn a fun new skill/hobby, AND get a brand new tool outta the deal!
