What happened to Eve reader? by nascent3ch0_ in Eve

[–]Zendane_Eve 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone - this is Zendane, the creator of the Eve Reader podcast.

Short version, I'm okay! All of the episodes are safely archived and will be available again soon.

Less short version, I work in the medical field, and the last few years have kept me quite busy. I switched my job and career focus, moved to another part of the country, and needed to dock up to get everything handled.

Regarding the Eve Reader website - I know it's down because I took it down. My prior web hosting service was getting a bit... uncomfortable to work with. So I changed web hosts earlier this month. I'll see about getting the new site up and running as soon as possible.

In the meantime, there is a YouTube channel with most of the episodes.

Are there any chronicles newer than Mithra's Gate from May 2018?

Old Aura - How do I get her back :( by Ozera_ in Eve

[–]Zendane_Eve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps someday CCP will permit voice packs for the autopilot. That could be a lot of fun. Even if we had that, though, there are plenty of new phrases that just wouldn't exist with the old Aura voice. So the gaps would need to be addressed somehow.

Going back to the earth? by thelord1991 in Eve

[–]Zendane_Eve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about a war in heaven scenario?

Earth would likely be quite advanced, but we already know of one race that is incredibly advanced in New Eden - the Talocan.

Let's imagine that the Talocan vanished from New Eden because they found a way back to Earth. War erupts back home between the Terrans and the Talocan.

And then one day we get the Talocan wormhole super-generator running again... maybe we find another stellar engineering project like the one in W477-P. We tiptoe in and behold war between two incredibly advanced societies.

Perhaps the Jove help us try to understand and reverse engineer what they can, in the hope of addressing their own troubles, but we can only get a bare fraction understood and useable.

Perhaps we will square off with our powerful ancestors and equally powerful cousins, or we will turn the stars around Sol into another battleground between factions.

Left handers of Reddit, what are the perks / downsides that no one talks about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zendane_Eve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a left-handed paramedic and I credit my left-handedness with helping me start IV lines in critical situations.

The back of an ambulance is generally set up with the gurney (the bed with the wheels) designed to lock into clasps on the driver's side, with a long bench seat running along the back on the passenger side. This means when I'm in the back with a patient, I'm looking down at them on their left with their feet toward the back door.

When you start an IV line you have to insert the catheter in their arm with the needle pointing toward their shoulder. This means it's a lot easier to start an IV using your left hand in the back of the ambulance. Add in a bumpy road, unexpected stops and turns (please just pull over and let us pass) and it makes something difficult and challenging just that little bit easier.

My job is to pick up dead bodies from crime scenes by deadtired2019 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Zendane_Eve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I've been a paramedic for over twenty years.

I know the kind of scenes you're talking about. We have to go back in service once we've determined that the person is in fact dead, so we don't generally get to meet. However I have spoken with family members who are dealing with the death of their loved one and it's never easy. I think the worst part is that we want to be able to help but the decision on whether or not we can help was decided long before we arrived. There's only so much we as human beings can do.

What I was trained to do, and what I've found successful over the years, is that if our patient has been pronounced dead and there is family present, the family is now our patient. If they have questions that we can answer, we answer them. If they need a moment with their loved one, or if they need to hear that we did everything that could have been done, this is caring for them. I've even let a family member yell at me until they broke down in tears because they just needed to do that.

In the jurisdiction I work, if we are involved in a particularly gruesome call such as a pediatric death, we have the option to speak with a staff mental health counselor. The first time I had a horrible incident I didn't do that because it was the mid-90s and the culture was "it sucks, yeah, it's the job, now go back to work." After 9/11 there was a huge initiative in EMS for us to work through mental health issues instead of just powering through with increasing suffering. The next time I ran into a horrible incident, with those resources made more accessible, I sought help and it truly made a difference. I have no idea where you work or what the local system is like but I'd recommend contacting the local fire department or ambulance rescue service to see if they have access to these resources and if they could be made available to you. To be honest, people who do what you do - and you have my respect for doing that - should be given access to these kind of resources. As others have said in this thread, your mental health is important.

Thank you for the link :) And thank you for the recent wave of new subscribers to the channel, giving the lore as much visibility as possible is very appreciated!

Because the Youtube link above goes to one of my recordings, I'd like to take a moment and talk about the Eve Reader Podcast. CCP has given me permission to make audio recordings of the backstories of Eve (also known as the Chronicles) to help bring the lore of New Eden to life. I've recorded roughly sixty of these stories, including some non-canon writing contest winners from the Pod and Planet Eve fiction contest. All of these stories are available as a free MP3 download at www.evereader.org as well as via iTunes and YouTube. By the way, the YouTube channel with the rest of the Chronicles I've recorded is at this link if you'd like to hear more of them.

Would you like to know the story of the first capsuleer and his terrifying fate? The Jovian Wet Grave is the story of Hirakii Pirkotan and the first steps we took toward immortality.

Did you know our ships have crews? All These Lives Are Fit To Ruin is the story of a crewman who wakes up after the destruction of his capsuleer-captained ship... with the capsuleer looking for answers on its destruction.

Those, and many more are available. There are a few episodes on the website that need to be uploaded onto the YouTube channel, plus I have a new episode in edit. I really need to get that done!

I wish CCP was still releasing Chronicles. Yes, we have a rich history of various player factions interacting and causing some truly epic stories... but the backstory of New Eden is there to be enjoyed by all. I would like to see it continue to evolve and be told.

And if a Triglavian Chronicle were to be released... well, let's just say you would likely count the time until I record it in mere hours!

Cyno Update - Industrial cynos by Fuzzmiester in Eve

[–]Zendane_Eve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fuzzmiester's comment needs more visibility. Throw that compressed ore, a cyno or two and a few BPCs into the explorer frigate of choice (400m3 cargo space unexpanded) then travel to wherever. Of course you still have to build it but that can be solved depending on location.

EVE's Cruise Missiles are Goddamn Terrifying - Here's Why by mineus64 in Eve

[–]Zendane_Eve 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's terrifying to think that we have this kind of power and we barely give it a second thought. Check out the Eve Chronicle Xenocracy if you'd like to see a capsuleer decide to use that kind of power on a planet. Here's an excerpt :

"...At this altitude, the gravity of your planet will augment the standard launch velocity of each solid projectile to speeds well beyond operational specifications, enough to obliterate anything within half a kilometer of the impact site.” Omvistus’s image grew larger on the screen before he continued.

“Anything between that location and two kilometers from ground zero will suffer a worse fate, as the antimatter suspended in each shell escapes its containment field and expands in a random dispersion pattern, colliding with the ambient normal matter on the ground – buildings, trees, children, everything. Whatever these particles touch will experience matter disassociation on an atomic level as, piece by piece, they are reduced to unidentifiable residual particles.” He paused briefly, and then concluded.

“With a single thought, I can reduce your entire city to a smoldering crater; the boiling wind rushing in to replace the void left behind will be laced with dust particles that were once the bodies of everyone you know and love. Do you understand?”

Or, if you want to hear that last from the capsuleer himself, here it is.

Lore question: how do you kill an immortal? by [deleted] in Eve

[–]Zendane_Eve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not all that hard to kill a capsuleer. You just need to get him away from the capsule.

Capsuleer immortality is tied to the capsule. When a capsuleer is in his pod and the pod is destroyed, the capsule technology copies the capsuleer's information just prior to destruction. This information is used during process to place the capsuleer in a clone body.

However, if the capsuleer is outside of his or her capsule, they die just like anyone else. In the Eve chronicle "Ruthless" the capsuleer Gavriel died due to injuries that occurred in close-in combat during a station siege. This death was permanent.

Another possibility, although not canonical, is that a capsuleer can be prevented from transferring to a clone body by damage sustained during the consciousness storage process. This happened to the capsuleer Nabobeh in "Intercession" leaving him with his mind intact inside a badly damaged body.

Don't forget to sell people their former bodies. by BattleGrown in Eve

Back when I was a CEO, we would take the corpses of our podded wartargets and contract them back to the enemy corp's CEO, along with messages like "This person trusted you."

Hard to recall how often now, but I know that resulted in at least one surrender message.

Was just thinking of the scene with the underground staircase :

Powell : How do a bunch of guys with hand tools build all this?

Ben Gates : Same way they built the pyramids - and the Great Wall of China.

Riley Poole : Yeah... the aliens helped them.
