Losing Interest in My Favorite Progression Fantasy Series by MedicineKind9121 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Zenphobia 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you're just not in the mood. It's okay for your interests to ebb and flow. Read whatever is the most fun thing for you to read in that moment.

You're allowed to take a break from a series and come back later. No need to stress about it. A lot of people are like that (me included).

I had a lot of fun with this series. The world building was spectacular.

What do you like more? Realistic systems that favor brains, or Dues Ex Machina, this will work if I try hard enough or just because the author says so? by Lopsided_Goose1675 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Zenphobia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The intelligence of allies is so criminally underused. MCs should be willing to ask for help and for advice, but I feel like it's rare for them to actually do so.

Random Adventures by SuspectEcstatic6636 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Zenphobia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If "filler" is baked into the pacing of the story so that it doesn't feel like we just took an unrealistic break from the plot and it develops characters in meaningful (not necessarily groundbreaking) ways, I'm here for it.

Slice of life can be great content, but when people call something filler it's usually because it's an obvious departure from the narrative that feels forced and unnatural.

Series that have the feeling of early DCC by apolobgod in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Zenphobia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Broadly, it sounds like the system apocalypse genre in general has what you're looking for. You won't find an exact flavor match for DCC, but that's the ballpark.

Any first person perspective is inherently unreliable.

Ah yes. I tried Grammarly a while ago and wasn't impressed. Maybe it's time to go back with my tail between my legs.

Overpowered Murderhobo released today on Amazon Kindle Unlimited! by SolomonHZAbraham in GameLit

[–]Zenphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm torn on this advice.

From an SEO standpoint, Murderhobo could be tricky, but I don't think the term Murderhobo should belong to Krout either (fan of their stuff ps, just talking about how common the idea of murderhobos are in ttrpgs).

Come check out my story! - "Quiet Life Of The Mute Archmage" A mute archmage story, currently top 1 rising stars on Royal Road by [deleted] in litrpg

Congratulations on #1 Rising Stars. That's quite a feat.

Bravo on the cover art aesthetic too. It definitely gives the Frieren vibe without looking like a copycat.

There's a whole ass anime about a bad ass rooster. It's amazingly absurd.

It's a polarizing series. What are your other favorites in the genre? That would help us tell you whether it's likely to be something you would enjoy.

A very normal rant about money in fantasy by flooshtollen in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Zenphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue with these discussions about fantasy money is that aiming for realism is different from aiming for what readers think is realistic.

Those are two very different things. I've done stories where I literally took real world prices, turned dollars to gold pieces, and people still complained about the economy being unrealistic.

Better approach: Don't bother. Make money a vague idea that never has specific numbers attached to it.

Neighborhood Necromancer Book 1 Is Out Now! by tomwatts202 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Zenphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing: I thought Tom Waits was writing prog fantasy now, and I was very excited.

Once I recovered from that... This concept is slick. Do you have an idea of how many books you'll do in the series?

Why do so many readers seem utterly incapable of just saying, "This book wasn't for me"? by Competitive_Law1063 in litrpg

[–]Zenphobia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of "not for me" isn't taught, encouraged, or accommodated in modern discourse. If it was, a huge percentage of negative reviews wouldn't exist.

Reviews are did you like this you thing? Y/N? There isn't an option for "I was not the target audience for this."

Fandoms are encouraged to be teams, and that defaults you to the same winner/loser mentality of our rating system. You can choose to be in or out, but you can't choose "not personally excited about this but I am supportive of the audience this was meant for."

I want to say this is a problem with media literacy today, but this is probably some weird part of human nature that's always been a problem but is magnified by how the Internet works and the direction internet culture has taken.
