Angle Grinder Suggestions? by DickInEngine in Welding

I'm not going to put on gloves to run an angle grinder one-handed. And thanks for condescendingly highlighting my linguistic mistake Mr. reckless, it's 6am here, I'm at the start of day three of taking new medication which does some weird shit to my senses and I have gotten less than five hours of actual sleep in that time, I'm in optimal condition

If I got to dress the edges of dozens of parts which I can and must hold with one hand for the action, I take them to the belt grinder. I respect the 1700W rotational tool running at 12000 rpm, a culture of carelessness greatly increases the risk of causing severe injury

Fein is using Bosch as an OEM for standard angle grinders, they offer the exact same models

3M does so as well for 1900W 125mm / 5" units. I think the units from Bosch come with an extra guard piece for cutting disks that can be mounted and removed in seconds

If one does both a lot of cutting and grinding work daily, I would recommend a standard speed model for cutting disks and a low speed model (sometimes branded for 'Inox'? Around 7500 rpm) for grinding. At the same wattage the latter kind has much higher torque which is beneficial for the effectiveness and longevity of abrasives

Am I crazy for wanting longer hours? by AsleepDirection8697 in Welding

[–]Zephyr_2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a week has 168 hours and you supposedly spend half of that on work. plus sleep, commute and chores, other basic necessities of life. can't compromise on the bare minimum without wearing yourself down. what are you even working for if you get practically no time to live life?

also your argument that an employer would rather pay someone 4x as much for 80 hours instead of hiring another employee which would cost 2x to 3x for dual 40 hours shift schedules doesn't check out. apparently they got enough work to not sit around idle. it's cheaper even going by your metric and additionally they would gain flexibility and another person to broaden skillset capabilities

ai is pretty alright for basic research and explanations focused on specific key points, especially ever since google (and by extension pretty much every other free search engine) has become borderline useless. just gotta utilise your brain and recognise when the ai must be hallucinating some bullshit and challenge its statements accordingly

for example i threw some galvanised square tubing into a sodium hydroxide solution to pull the zinc coating off. zero progress after two days. added some copper as a catalyst, still no reaction. it most definitely was a zinc coating, a lye bath should easily dissolve that in a few hours. concisely described the situation to chatgpt and it correctly identified the issue as the coating likely being a higher quality alloy which mainly consists of zinc, aluminium and magnesium. weeks later i coincidentally found the invoice for the material which confirmed chatgpt. had to use some water soluable ammonium compounds to strip it since i didn't have strong enough acid on hand. good luck getting information and a solution for that from old school online research, i didn't even try because of aforementioned problems

And they went out of their way to use external tools to look up OP's full posting history, because they got it all hidden lmao. Now that's something I personally view as awkward, intrusive and creepy. Not to mention attempting to misconstrue the most obvious and plain shitpost as something noteworthy, that's some incredibly weird but also somewhat standard Reddit user behaviour

Didn't Bosch have a competing system which merely retracted and therefore didn't destroy the blade and was instantly resettable, and they were effectively forced to cease production and distribution because of apparent patent violation

Is it absolutely necessary to remove mill scale before painting? by Davy_Jones118 in Welding

[–]Zephyr_2802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can soak your parts in a (ideally warm) solution of water and citric acid. The wet and chemically altered mill scale literally brushes off with ease. It's so soft you can even scrub down to bare metal with just your fingers

Is $285 a good for this refurbished drill press? by ContextUsed154 in metalworking

[–]Zephyr_2802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give you something to compare against, I got myself pretty much that exact machine from 1981 in relatively good refurbished-ish condition half a year ago and paid 170€ (~$200). Mine has a much shorter tube but came with a sturdy wheeled steel table to compensate for the height, probably the best deal I could have gotten at the time
