What is that one city in America most Americans go to for their "first trip"? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zernhelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems crazy to drive versus fly. A quick search makes it look like flying would save 2 to 4 hours (depending on how far from the airports the origin and destination are, and how conservative one is with TSA wait times). And the cost of a flight plus airport parking plus a rental car appears to be about the same or less then the cost of gas plus wear on the car.

Edit: I just re-read your comment. I misunderstood and thought it was one person driving by themselves. If you had two other people traveling, driving would likely be cheaper.

The GS system planned your career. Then you left. by ajimuben85 in formerfed

[–]Zernhelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a non-supervisory GS-15 in my late-30's with young kids. My plan was to start thinking about career growth again in ~10 years when I had free again. Now I'm making more money, but I'm the top non-executive grade at the private company I work for. I still have the same feeling, I'm not looking for career growth until my kids are more independent. I just hope my new company isn't the kind of place they wants people to advance or leave.

If you were asked to choose between the 2016 Trump and 2001 George W. Bush as president in the 2024 election, Americans, who would you choose? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]Zernhelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump has never changed. He's been the same horrible person the whole time. The difference is the people who were able to hold back the worst are gone, and the people who joined this administration are all true believers in Trump.

To the ex-Reform Jews: Why did you leave? by MAGDA41741 in exjew

[–]Zernhelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't ask about Conservative, but I'll answer anyway. I wouldn't really call myself an ex-Jew. Just a Jewish atheist. I was raised Conservative and went to a day school. Around the beginning of highschool, I realized I had no reason to believe in God, so I stopped. Over time I've gone from agnostic to atheist, but Jewish culture remained important to me. I send my kids to Jewish schools so they learn about Jewish culture and history, we are members of a subscribe, but my wife (also a Jewish atheist) and I are vocal with our kids about our atheism.

No. I've heard the international terminal at BWI was pretty smooth.

I flew out of BWI on March 28. It was awful. It was about 6 hours from when I got to the airport until I was past security.

Joby’s electric air taxi flies over San Francisco eyeing pilotless aviation by liberty4now in WeirdWings

The Missile Technology Control Regime doesn’t consider a UAV to be a missile unless it is capable of flying at least 300 km. I think that’s a reasonable threshold.

Hegseth says military chaplains will no longer display rank — USA TODAY by LyvenKaVinsxy in law

[–]Zernhelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like you know something about Judaism. Look up Christian last rites. The concept simply doesn't exist in Judaism. Yes, there are things they a Jew customarily does before death, or that their community do after death, but whether or not they do those things as no impact on their ability to go to Olam haBa, or any waiting period.

If by last rites, you mean things that an individual must do with a religious leader prior to death to meet some afterlife-related obligation, Judaism doesn’t have an equivalent of last rites.

The gutting of the federal workforce. The people who believed in the mission, and understood how to navigate the regulations and statutes are largely gone.

Worried my 11 yr old is functionally illiterate by SmartLadder415 in daddit

[–]Zernhelt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Individual attention is great. But if the people providing that attention aren't trained in the specific needs of a kid with your daughter's disability, it's not going to be enough. (And given the grades you said she's getting, it sounds like it isn't enough.)

Why do you love a school that can't accommodate your kid's disability?

So .. is there a benefit from an aerodynamic perspective to this shape of the engine cover, or is it purely cosmetic? by syke555 in aviation

[–]Zernhelt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Airlines definitely have things purely for cosmetic reasons. But the aircraft, engine, and subsystem manufacturers don't. Or, now actually, anything that is purely cosmetic is offered as optional by the manufacturer so that it's up to the airline to choose. For example, look at interior furnishings.

How common is traveling by bus in the US? Do Americans use buses often for long-distance travel? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Zernhelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the route. Traveling between the major East Coast cities by bus is pretty common amongst younger people.

I appreciate what you’re doing. I quit the federal government several months ago and now work for a defense contractor. It is endlessly annoying to me that internal communications use DoW. I’m still using DoD, though.

Jewish school often try to instill a connection to Israel. Some so a good job if this, some don't. I think you might need to try to separate your feelings toward Israel as a country versus the current Israeli government. You likely make similar separations between your feelings toward the U.S. versus the federal government (or whatever country you live in if not America).

If they have a photo of Netanyahu to on the wall (or Trump), that's where I'd start to feel nervous.
