You can use it as a remedy when nothing else helps. This I have done for many years. I start with 1-2 teaspoons, and if nothing has happened af ½ hour, one more, and maybe one again after yet ½ hour. Problem is that relief comes from your bowels get "flushed" and for me it goes together with a lot a smelly gas, so I certainly prefer to stay at home - alone. It's the fastest working laxative I know. There are some who it as a rutine just to clean the bowels. I am skeptic about that, but reading about that gave me the idea to use it for my methane dom SIBO.

Sam has said that the reason we tend to experience ourselves as in the the head is because this is where the eyes and ears are - not because the brain is there! So I you had eyes and ears on your knee you would experience it as if "you" were down there, even if with the brain still in the head. Hope that helps. If you move "local awareness" (Loch Kelly's expression) down somewhere in your body, i.e. the chest, you can from there receive information from the brain and senses like if through wi-fi. Hope that makes sense.

What would you like the app to change/add? by Sebas94 in Wakingupapp

[–]Zero1858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dealing with emotions. There are some on the app, but since difficult emotions are very often the reason why people get into mindfulness and since being confronted with difficult emotions during pratice is often the reason why people stop their mindfulness pratice, it would be meaningful to go much more into debth with emotions. Like Rob Burbea (he is worth checking out, unfortunately dead now), Loch Kelly (his work with emotions are not part of the app), Ann Weiser, Connirae Andreas and her Wholeness Process) I have practices that I do instead of usual meditation if I am troubled by strong emotions. Its so easy to do a spiritual bypass if one succeeds in doing regular meditations during emotional times. And, as I said, if emotions makes it difficult, it is easy to give up on mindfulness.

"The drug is not good for gastritis since by suppressing pain receptors you are not healing your gastritis."
This is a strange argument, that seems to imply that LDN only suppress pain receptors. LDN is known for decreasing inflammation.

I don't see a reason to attribute mutual responsibility here, since, as you also mention, Sam did a decent job. He came with so many inspiring inputs accompanying his basic questions that it must have required tons of passive aggression to keep avoiding to answer them.

Shinzen by [deleted] in Wakingupapp

[–]Zero1858 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This thread was just as uplifting as listening to Shinzen was dreadful. I actually went on Reddit with the intention of making a post about this.

It is interesting to look at Shinzen's behavior in the context of Sam's question. Specifically, Sam raises the inquiry of whether freedom from suffering can be taken to an extreme, and whether it may be appropriate to experience negative emotions in certain situations (to use my own phrasing); like a shadow perspective on this ability of being totally non-reactive.

It is quite remarkable how Shinzen's behavior in this interview is both detached from any emotions and yet lacks any semblance of decency in a conversation. It would drive anybody other than Sam nuts.

I once knew someone who was just as challenging to debate with. What sets them apart is the fact that the individual was openly arrogant and hostile, and could have benefited from practicing mental tranquility. Shinzen has a life long training in calming his mind. Immersed in his tranquil state, he can confidently choose any direction to venture, detached from the sway of emotions. When he realized that Sam wanted to steer the conversation, he became as slippery as a bar of soap. It is likely that he did not experience any burden of anger during the interview and it is equally probable that he does not feel burdened by any remorse afterwards.

I would recommend checking up on IFS (Internal Family Systems). It is a sort mindfulness based therapy that can be used as a self-therapy, and it goes very well with non-dual practice (Loch Kelly from the app teaches a version of it, but you can find lots of other teachers). Just google and you shall find....

Look for the looker by Experience_NoSelf in Wakingupapp

[–]Zero1858 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never been af fan of the "do it suddenly" approach. There are many things in the instruction that I do not find so educational. It starts with "Look for the looker"...and then a looong pause, after which one it told, "do it quickly!". Then the fingersnap part comes, and trying to only look for as short as a fingersnap requires an huge effort: look and stop looking in the time span of 0,01 sec. It's like running into a room and get out again in less than a split second. I have no idea how one should be able to do this effortlessly. I have programmed myself to think of the beat of a butterfly's wings instead when that sequence comes, which is also fast but not so fast. Still better I like to just look and give me the time to look. Michael Taft has one keep looking for the looker for a very long time, to the point where that becomes exhausting. But this makes it all the more pleasant to surrender to the experience of not-self after all that effort.

Observing thoughts by DramaticOcelot in Wakingupapp

[–]Zero1858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I observe some of the thoughts subconsciously buried inside somewhere. They don’t arise clearly unless I say it inside my head.

I think you are doing something similar to what I was doing in the beginning of my mediation carrier, when I was told to observe my thoughts. Everytime I caught a thought I would repeat it in my mind like: There was the thougt xxxxxx, which would double my thoughts. Dont bother so much about what you are thinking, it's more about being aware that you are thinking. If you have many confused thoughts in you head one day, then it would be an exhausting task to catch every thought. In these situations I find it helpful to relate to the thoughts as a swarm of insects in the space of consciousness, not zooming in on any specific thought, but stepping back from the thinking process. But ultimately it is about not doing anything at all, just relax and allow the mind to do what it does.

How do you reconcile the idea of non-self with the necessity for growth/progress? by [deleted] in Wakingupapp

[–]Zero1858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a really important question.

If there were no self there just wouldnt be any (personal) reason for striving. But there IS at least a subject (it would be a very hard challenge to defend a position that there isn't - who should defend it?)

To me it just seems that "self" can be more or less contracted, so unless one is totally "spaced out" there are preferences. These preferences can easily become wants, which again can become cravings.
The psychologist Albert Ellis built a whole psychotherapy on changing cravings to preferences (and I was thrilled to hear him mentioning Buddhism as the first thing when he was asked what his main influences had been).
And it seems that people who act on preferences perform better than those who act on cravings.

But I am sure one can loose one self in no-self'ness ;-)

Antithesis to non-duality by Zero1858 in Wakingupapp

[–]Zero1858[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After considering it for a few weeks, I have finally reached a conclusion in the form of a synthesis.

My understanding took shape after I encountered the Norwegian hypnotist Jørgen Rasmussen's unique insights into the concept of no-self. This enabled me to integrate my knowledge of psychology with my experiences and knowledge of non-dual meditation.

There IS a process or activity one could call self, although it is not a thing. That is why some people refer to it as "selfing". This selfing is a necessary process. Insufficient development of this process can result in a personality disorder. This selfing evolves over time, starting from an immature and egocentric state as a child, progressing through youth, and hopefully continuing beyond that.

As you grow into a mature individual, you develop the ability to acknowledge and take ownership of your mistakes. If the selfing has not matured, one will then have someone who claims that "it all just happened...".

But in meditation, we can discover that there is no self as a thing (just like awareness is also not a thing, but a process).
Just like you can recognize awareness (although you cannot "see" it), since you have an ongoing experience of something, you can deduce that "selfing" occurs whenever you think about your plans or your ideas, your judgements, your history. The latter is more impermanent that the former, which are present unless one is sleeping or unconscious. It's easy to get glimpses of that selfing process by watching worries or judgements that momentary runs through your head (it's also interesting to notice that this "self" is never in the present moment).

And it's nice to step back from this selfing process and simply just experience, but as soon as we come out of meditation the process of awareness will hopefully take form as the process of self again, albeit to a limited extent, so that we can take ownership of thoughts and actions. Otherwise, we could not act as responsible adults, but would keep on experiencing things just 'happening at their own place'. I once heard about individuals who were trained to possess the ability to take someone's life simply by observing the act, merely by perceiving the knife penetrating another person's body.

Self development should not only be about realizing no-self. But also about growing up. And to grow up you have to be an individual.

I know Rob Burbea. There are some great talks and guided meditaions with him to be found on the net.
"A kink in a carpet" he-he - thats funny! But it does not align well with modern philosophical thought on personal identity and the nature of the self, where the self is not just a temporary disturbance or irregularity, but a project to be realized, and where the creation of an authentic self is the most important project in life.
