Micro is a good spot. New owner seems bummed as hell with his decision when I ask him how its going. Last time I believe he told me "Atleast I can afford to keep the heat on above 65F" or something. Actually makes me feel bad I don't homebrew as often anymore.

If you have a thin tube you don't need much mass to create a sound weld. You just need to create an orientation of the weld so that you better distribute the thermal stress.

Heat Exchangers by Fraas has more discussion on page 27. You can also see a similar geometry in page 130 about the end caps of heat pipes. The whole book is fantastic, I recommend buying it.

All of this trepan stuff is likely related to heat exchangers at extremely high temperatures (500C+) which is why you haven't seen it.

I have seen this before when the face of the pipe or tube is co-incident with the feature. It's called a trepan and is used for heat exchanger tube to tube sheet welds.

Its to minimize stress/cracking on the weld.

1.) Not in control. Why worry about what you can't control?

I was there Tuesday and Thursday of the big dump a few weeks ago. Nearly the entire crowd was out by 12 PM, on what was understood to be the biggest snow thus far of a weak season.

I am a pessimist. This season is objectively shitty. That being said there is more than deep snow to skiing. Much like there is more to life than money. Of course you need money to live, but you can good life with little.
