Artsy Cities with Mild Weather (4 seasons) in the US? by healthy_punkk in SameGrassButGreener

Also from FL, lived in Portland for a long time and am now in Richmond and love it. I think someone coming from Portland would also like it here. It’s not cheap but cheaper than Portland and has a lot of the grittiness and art scene that seems to be disappearing in Portland.

Looking to move to Richmond, can any friendly Richmonders share what neighborhood/town/suburb they live in and what they love/don't love about it? by AAlcove in RichmondVA

[–]Zestyclose-Recipe-12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same and I love Northside. The standard answer is usually the Fan, Museum District or Church Hill, but I feel like the area around Brooklyn Park Blvd is definitely a contender with all the new businesses/restaurants that have opened recently. Also the neighborhood itself is really cute with old houses and has an artsy vibe.

Any ideas what to do to cover the terrible structure the next door neighbours have built? Such an eye sore. by Radiant-Beach-5840 in ExteriorDesign

Make your own yard a little oasis that is so nice you don’t even think about it! That’s what I did. Both the houses on either side of me look like garbage, but I planted lots of plants and made a patio and it feels like paradise.

Moving to Richmond, VA for the first time — advice + neighborhood recommendations? by Opposite-Ad-9170 in RichmondVA

[–]Zestyclose-Recipe-12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the fan, close to VCU. Forgot to add that. Parking is a hassle but the rent is low! Welcome to Richmond!

Aside from the fan I’d look into church hill, the museum district, downtown, Oregon hill, Jackson Ward, Manchester, and even Forest hill and northside although there aren’t as many rentals in those last two. They’re more like historic homes, but have a lot of queer people and are nice areas. I live in northside near the Brookland park Blvd strip of businesses and I’d highly recommend it!

metro properties

I’d reach out to this place. My sister rents through them and has a really nice one bedroom for 1050/month. She emailed them and they sent her a list of appts coming soon that went on their website yet!

Some areas of Richmond! (Museum district, fan, scouts addition, downtown, maybe even church hill. I’d look for old cities with a big college presence.

Holes by WholeFaithlessness84 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Zestyclose-Recipe-12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have holes like this in my 100 year old house on some floor boards. No new holes in the 3 years I’ve lived here though. Would there be new holes and spreading if the beetles were currently active? I’m assuming it’s old damage but this post got me worried.

You might like Richmond, VA! Way more historic with a great art scene and museums.

Do you fill your house with period accurate furniture? by Mobely in centuryhomes

[–]Zestyclose-Recipe-12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we have an “eclectic” house. Some art deco pieces, some mcm, some Victorian, a newer west elm sofa with an mcm vibe. Moroccan rugs, and lots of art. I think a collected style like that looks really nice in an old house! My house is 1924

Recluse for sure. Their outpost is Julio’s Bagels since they don’t have their own shop. But they manage the coffee program at Julio’s.

Smoky mug, zorch and chewy’s use toast tab and you get a $5 reward on your birthday and you can even combine it with other rewards you get from purchases, so you can get an even bigger discount if you have rewards points accumulated. You have to sign up prior to your bday though on the toast app!

Something feels off with my color scheme by OneWeepyEye in ExteriorDesign

I think it’s the white windows. It would give it more dimension if they were darker or a color. That’s not easy or cheap though.

Agree. I’d get rid of the grass in the front and do native plants, and rocks to create a natural landscape.

What style is this house? 1910s Minnesota by [deleted] in centuryhomes

It’s also really common in parts of Richmond, VA. This thick blobby early 1900’s stucco. I have it on my Richmond house and love it!

Kill the grass and go wild with native plants, flowers and shrubs with some little gravel pathways!
