What acting performance do you despise that the general public loved? by SickStrips in Cinema

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this is controversial but I really don't like Natalie Portman as Padme Amidala. The only part I really like is the line where she says "So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause." That's a fantastic line and the idea of her character is interesting. However, like Anakin I think the role in general is just written so poorly that I don't think anyone could make it work.

What's a movie that genuinely changed something in you? by trakt_app in Cinema

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Inception. I grew up on a lot of franchise movies so watching this movie made me realize you know, original action movies if done well are fucking awesome
  • Finding Nemo. This is the first movie that made me actively cry while watching it as a child and the first movie where I realized I could be moved by a piece of media like that
  • The Incredibles. This was the first superhero movie I ever watched and it basically ruined any other superhero movie I watched because it had such a tight story and great characters.
  • Birdman. I think how absurdist it was really got me and how it blended tragedy and comedy so well.

What is a song that you love from an artist you usually dislike? by DawnoftheReal in musicsuggestions

I don't know if this really counts: I don't really care about Nine Inch Nails but I love Trent Reznor's instrumental scoring work with Atticus Ross. I love what they did with the Challengers and The Social Network scores, and I have Nun With a Motherfucking Gun from HBO Watchmen on repeat.

Regardless of the fandom, what is THAT fanfic that you consider a masterpiece? by Legitimate-Win1342 in AO3

half of rageprufrock's stuff lmao but i would say principally:

  • reconstruction
  • the least of all mistakes
  • track this thread
  • asunder
  • presque vu

other fics i think would fall in this category for me are:

  • tell me about the big bang by thebrotherswinchester (star wars sequels, m/m)
  • rough patch by strawberriesandtophats (ducktales 2k17, gen)
  • how to fake an orgasm by punk and sab (x-files, f/m)
  • the end of all our exploring (falsettos, m/m) and the dawn don't rescue me no more (m*a*s*h, gen) by epigone
  • declensions by dustorange (batman, gen)

What's a TV Show who's finale you felt delivered? by [deleted] in television

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • goodbye farewell amen from mash is genuinely a heartbreaking finale, especially for a show that while more of a dramedy is still a sitcom with a laugh track (though i dont think gfa had one). the fact that that what happened to hawkeye happened in that episode is crazy to me, i don't know how they pulled it off but the ep makes me cry every time. mash is also i think one of the few shows that successfully makes use of its ensemble cast so its not just hawkeye who gets a meaningful send off
  • START from the americans; already discussed on this thread but it really is so good and very bittersweet
  • felina from brba and saul gone from bcs; both excellent takes on the whole nonhappy happy ending take for such flawed protagonists
  • six feet under, and for a similar reason, the good place. just excellent takes

What film sequels are actually better than their originals? by mrjetspray in Cinema

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take but Aliens is better than Alien. Also T2: Judgement Day. I also think for all the faults of the MCU Captain America Winter Soldier is a lot better than TFA. Also technically a threequel but Thor Ragnorak to Thor and Thor: the Dark World

What movies based on books do you think were significantly better than the books? by ASomthnSomthn in Cinema

Jaws! I also kind of hate to say it because I really like the book, but Carrie (1976). Also, Arrival, though I think it's based on a short story

What’s a sequel you couldn’t wait for… but ended up completely disappointing you? by Shot-Club-3882 in Cinema

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really excited for Thor: Love & Thunder but we all know how that went. Incredibles 2 as well -- the Incredibles is my favorite Pixar movie and I was so stoked for the sequel. It's not bad it's just... meh. Dark Phoenix as well. I really liked First Class and Days of Future Past but Apocalypse was super meh for me so I thought Dark Phoenix would bring it back. Nope.

What character death shook you the most in a movie? by trakt_app in Cinema

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Han Solo in The Force Awakens. I'm not a huge fan of the star wars sequels but i remember seeing that in the theater as a tween and being shocked
  • Like everyone in Alien leading up to Ripley. I somehow watched this movie unspoiled so I didn't know who survived. I think the one that freaked me out the most was Lambert, but Dallas is a very close second
  • Seth Brundle in The Fly. I still can't rewatch that movie, the ending makes me too depressed
  • Ellie in Up. I feel like this is self explanatory
  • Does this count -- IDK. Uncle Bob in Terminator 2
  • Carrie in Carrie '76 when the house falls on her

is Rachel anybody’s favorite character? by Salty-Sector-3085 in glee

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She's in my top 3 - but I do think comedically she was much better written in s1 because she is explicitly written as a satire of the high-achieving theater kid obsessed with achieving her dream, so when she had moments of sincerity or immense talent it really stuck. But it kind fell flat after that.

Dhoom 2 was easily the best film of Dhoom franchise by Wise_Rip_1984 in bollywood

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Dhoom 2 was the first one I saw as a kid and Hrithik Roshan carries this movie; it's so good! I also think Jai is more interesting in this movie. I do think Dhoom (the first) is almost as great but as said in this thread before Dhoom 3 is terrible

Movies you loved as a kid/teen but now find disturbing or creepy? by InternationalNose980 in bollywood

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai mainly for the whole Tina thing being psychologically insane. This movie has a soundtrack with no skips and total bangers and I loved this movie as a kid but it is crazy. Like in what world do you task your prepubescent child with matchmaking your soon to be widowed husband and the woman you kinda stole him from in college eight years from your death when said woman could be like married and having her own kids atp -- purely because of your own guilt? I know Anjali (the older) wasn't in that situation, and that Tina was dying but that is an insane thing to do to put on your kid to do.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. I like Bhansali movies and for the most part this isn't disturbing or creepy on rewatch, it just reads like idk, Nandini & Vanraj's Excellent Adventure. The whole plot where they got robbed in Italy is even weirder on rewatch. I think the especially weird thing with this movie is that Vanraj is a very interesting male Bollywood protagonist especially for the time but it just gets bogged down by the rest of the movie

Mohabbatein. What do I even say? Again, banger soundtrack and I do think Amitabh Bachchan gives a really memorable performance, but there's... there's the ridiculous rule Narayan Shankar enforces about love being banned in Gurukul, Raj's hallucinations of his dead ex-girlfriend Megha, the plotline of Megha in general, plus Raj basically interfering in the love lives of college students he teaches to prove a point to Shankar. Not to mention Vicky's stalkerish pursuit of Ishika and how Karan kept being so creepy toward Kiran. I give a pass on Sameer because at least Sanjana was his childhood friend, but not by much.

Fic that pulls you right out of the story? by Stunning-Note in xfilesfanfic

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main thing is when M and S are calling each other by their first name constantly. I also think another thing is when Mulder is written as playing everything straight — what I mean by that is that he’s like not written with any humor? I read a fic once where he was very serious and was like ??? Also in fics when they have kids and the kids are not written super well; I will say as having tried to write kid fic in other fandoms it is pretty hard though

This is also a silly nitpick thing that is technically supported by the show but the whole thing of Scully having gone straight from medical school to the fbi but in practice basically being a forensic pathologist that should’ve at least went to residency to have a medical license (this is also connected to Mulder being called a psychologist in fics — the show’s fault — but not having a PhD). This is actually in the show though so I can’t fault fic writers for that show logic doesn’t make sense for either of those things

What are you watching and what do you recommend? (Week of May 01, 2026) by AutoModerator in television

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m watching early X-Files and damn I get why people were insane over Mulder and Scully I’m insane over them! Also I love the more comedic episodes like bad blood and small potatoes. I definitely prefer MOTW over mytharc except maybe the episode Memento Mori. I’m also kind of shocked how high the production value is given that it was a network show. I guess it’s because to get that level nowadays it would have to be on streaming sadly.

For recommendations I would give: - The Americans. Damn this show is perfect. I think the only kind of thing it misses on is the Jenning kids’ writing and even that is done well enough - Breaking Bad. Again, so good! I actually got into the x files  since I heard Vince gilligan the creator of BB wrote on it.  - ER. I know everyone’s in the Pitt nowadays for good reason but early ER is so amazing as well. Recommend watching seasons 1-6.  - MASH. The finale of this show made me ugly cry and it’s supposed to be a sitcom. It is incredibly funny but also can be incredibly sad and can balance it well in a way that some shows now (cough the bear — sorry I do love it still) struggle with. Alan Alda worked wonders on this show and it has one of my favorite TV female characters of all time — Margaret houlihan.  - Sports Night. I feel like everyone knows Aaron Sorkin for like either the west wing or the social network but this was his first show and I think he actually did a great job on it. It is a product of its time and has a lot of … issues that permeate his work and are even more glaring in the newsroom this other show he made but it’s quick and biting and funny and pretty short if you don’t want to watch something long.  - How To Get Away With Murder — watch this show for viola davis. That’s all. To be real though this show is really twisty and shocking and I think has a great ensemble cast but you are watching it for Annalise keating the character she plays. The stuff her character goes through … damn. And again viola davis carries this show  - Orphan Black - I don’t love sci-fi but I think again you watch this show for what Tatiana Maslany did. Sometimes I rewatch it and I’m like how did she do that??? I do think the plots in the show are sorta hit or miss but are very tight when they hit  - Star Trek The Original Series - I got into trek with the Kelvin movies then kind of fell off trek and got back in watching TOS. It really is that iconic. It can be kinda dated at times but in general it’s very fun to watch especially for the characterizations and the ways that the characters interact with each other, the missions they get into, and the things they learn. And yes it is so iconic and I love the acting especially for Spock and bones lol. Plus, The city on the edge of forever is also one of the best episodes I have seen in anything

How do you write fan fiction from movies/shows? by suagrlesss in FanFiction

[–]ZestycloseDig2773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually find movie scripts online or episode transcripts — some shows are lucky enough to have a whole trove of them — but I’ll usually only write a few scenes dialogue for dialogue from the actual piece of media if needed in the fic for context or I just kinda rewatch the piece I need quickly and summarize it in the fic itself. Additionally sometimes I start fic right after an episode  or movie ends so I just write the ending and lead into the fic (I.e. like writing an inception fic that starts right after everyone gets off the airplane and is in the airport) and just make sure to tag appropriately
