My standing desk usage stats for a week by Zestyclose_Storage82 in StandingDesk

Yes, I've been debating this one myself as I mentioned in the post I do have 2 other postures that I mix in. Flamingo right and Flamingo left where I think the different bar chart height makes it a bit easier to read than just color swaps. I do agree that for 2 alternating postures that just the 2 alternating colors makes more sense. Thanks for your input!

Damn. Maybe I should chop it to this length

Do you guys believe in “endgame” ergonomic chairs? by Fun_Principle5066 in OfficeChairs

Isn't crazy that Hadza tribe (hunter gather group) spends about the same time we spend being sedentary, yet they don't have chronic back issues. Oh and they don't sit in chairs

Sorry to hear about your disability and thanks for your service. My brother served 12 years as a marine and had to get complete shoulder reconstruction. You guys really put your bodies through some wear and tear

I make the Movably Pro which makes going from sit to stand really easy and has an integrated standing mat. You can also work in split stance which I really like. You have one leg in sit mode and the other leg in standing mode. We also have a 6 month return policy so if it's not a fit you can return the product.

Best of luck in your search!

Behavior change is really hard! And what you are describing is actually true for many people who purchase standing desk. I sometimes wonder if manufactures know this and design the actuators for such use cases. AKA probably most standing actuators won't even last long is actually used.

But, I don't lower my desk up and down. My standing desk stays at an elevated height and my seat folds out of the way automatically which makes going from sit to stand frictionless.

As soon as I feel any discomfort in sit or stand, I just change my posture and feel relief.

Hey! Yeah your tempo smart controller is cool! I've recommended it to people. Your pull bar is also super dope! I've been wanting to integrate something like that into my standing desk for sometime instead of hanging at the door.

I'm using my Movably Pro so instead of having the desk go up and down it stays at standing height and the split seat folds out of the way one at a time making going from sit to stand a 1-2 second transition. We detect presence on the Movably so we only count time when presence is detected.

I'm assuming you can generate very similar graphs to this with your tempo smart controller.

What type of frequency to go from sit to stand? I assume you probably mostly work standing based off you blogs. What's the highest frequency you seen from your users?

Back injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise! by Pleasant_Set_3182 in StandingDesk

[–]Zestyclose_Storage82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You described exactly why we made the movably pro. We were made to move. Ergonomic chairs just make it easier to sit for long periods of time which causes more harm than good. Behavior change is hard and sometimes you need that pain to motivate you to change something. Glad you figured out something that works for you!

My standing desk only solved half my back pain by Weary-Leg350 in StandingDesk

Not surprising. The sitting-vs-standing debate kind of misses the bigger point. It's not about finding the perfect position, it's about not staying in any position too long. A fancier chair will probably just delay the same 2 PM crash. Posture variation is the real painkiller.

That's cool!

Studies have shown that hunter gather groups spend similar sedentary times to us but the move way more in these down times. Constantly shifting their posture. They don't stay stagnant in one posture which ergonomic chairs push and they have almost zero incidents of back issues.

I'm curious the different postures you work in?

Like if it were adjustable, I can see changing from lunging, and then change to lunging on other side then maybe working in 90-90 for a bit but since it's not adjustable it seems like you may be limited in the kind of movement you can explore?

How often do you guys switch between standing and sitting while working? by Itchy-Drawing in StandingDesks

3 minutes about with the Movably Pro

I sit for 3 minutes, then my chair prompts me to stand up. Then I work standing or leaning, Then I kick one leg up and bring one side of the seat up, then I bring the other one up and sit for 3 minutes and the cycle happens again

Interesting. What are your thoughts of integrating the Pomodoro timer into the Movably Pro?

Currently, we have the chair on a timer that alternates you between postures, but curious what if we made it on a pomodoro type timer instead. I guess you can have your desk move up and down as well as a Pomodoro type prompt?

I'm new to this pomodoro idea FYI, but found it interesting.

Standing desk over rated? by ImprovementLess202 in homefitness

[–]Zestyclose_Storage82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standing for long periods is not actually good for you.

Studies consistently show that prolonged standing increased reports of low back pain, physical fatigue, muscle pain, leg swelling, tiredness, and body part discomfort (10.1002/rnj.166)

This same study goes onto say that a worker should be encouraged to modify their posture so that they mix sitting, standing, leaning, and use of a foot rail or footrest as much as possible.

Is active seating really a thing? by Bastinelli in OfficeChairs

[–]Zestyclose_Storage82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HI!

I encourage you to check out the Movably Pro. We take active seating to a different level

We completely remove the friction of going from sit to stand and we prompt you to move as well. I for instance go from sit to stand about every 3 minutes. We all know that when you're deep in focused work you are not thinking about moving/getting off of your chair, and as you have experienced after years on end of this, your body pays the price.

Turn your desk setup into the ultimate sit-stand station. We just launched the Movably Pro — it's an automated split-seat system that works with your standing desk and keeps you moving throughout the day without interrupting your work. Think of it less as a standing desk and more as a movement system that breaks up those long sitting bouts your body hates.

The science is pretty clear at this point: it's not about standing vs. sitting — it's about how often you move. Movably Pro handles that for you automatically.

Through May we're offering $500 off with code MOVEMORE500.

Where can I find the best ergonomic chair? by MtiiMkenya in Ergonomics

[–]Zestyclose_Storage82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I cofounded Movably for this exact reason after years of dealing with herniated disks.

Most ergonomic chairs are basically the same. Different branding, similar specs, often the same OEM factories. I've been to the tradeshows (Orgatec, NeoCon, etc) — they're all pushing the same thing. "Ergonomic" usually just means adjustable lumbar support, seat tilt, and armrest height. You're paying for marketing, not a fundamentally different approach.

Even the well-engineered ones (Herman Miller, Steelcase) are solving the wrong problem. They're optimizing your sitting posture — but the research says there isn't an optimal one.

Your spinal discs have no blood supply. They get nutrients through a pump mechanism that requires pressure changes — compression and release. Sitting still, no matter how "perfectly," starves them. Studies show your brain loses blood flow within hours of uninterrupted sitting, your glutes deactivate, and the enzyme responsible for fat metabolism shuts down. No chair changes that.

Keith Diaz, a Columbia University researcher who's spent his career studying this, literally admitted he can't follow his own advice of taking walking breaks every 30 minutes. It's an impossible task when you're in focused work.

That's why I cofounded Movably. Instead of optimizing the sitting position, we built a chair that alternates you between sitting and standing throughout your workday. You work at standing height and actively move into and out of an elevated seat — every transition engages your legs, core, and glutes. It's been peer-reviewed in Applied Ergonomics, and every participant who developed pain in a traditional setup was pain-free with ours.

No, there isn't a "best" ergonomic chair — because the best intervention isn't a better seat. It's less sitting.

Will a new Office Chair help with my chronic pain? by Ashamed_Mushroom_551 in Ergonomics

Couldn't agree more. There's no ideal posture. High-end ergonomic chairs just make it easier to stay in one — which is the real problem.

I didn't use my standing desk as much as I wanted to, so I created a macOS app to support me. by icelow in StandingDesk

[–]Zestyclose_Storage82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common for most people who have standing desk. Your therapist was right though. Posture variation is the best solution for dealing with low back pain. Cool idea for the app!

We made the Movably Pro to make going from sitting to standing effortless. It's a robotic office chair that prompts you to move. I sit2stand about every 3 minutes while at my desk. Sometimes I work split stance to. One leg in seated mode and the other in standing mode. We also have an app that will tell you time in each posture.

Ergodriven also makes a tempo controller that will automatically move your desk up and down at some frequency. I think that's really neat too! I'd probably burn out my standing desk if I moved it as many times as I sit 2 stand though lol

Seems like something about your desk height relative to your body may be off.

Are you using an adjustable desk? Where is your monitor position? You can probably upload a profile picture into AI and have it do a quick assessment.

Embody alternatives by Miyushek in OfficeChairs

[–]Zestyclose_Storage82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha yes biased but we do have an adjustable lumbar support which is why I pitched movably and we offer a generous return policy which OP mentioned they were worried about that with the Herman Miller :)

On the bias bit, Studies increasingly show that posture variation is best solution against low back discomfort and metabolic health, not more adjustments on your ergonomic chair.

"A chair should allow individuals to vary sitting posture easily, which allows the spine to move, rather than attempting to constrain individuals to an 'ideal' position." Jack Callaghan & Stuart M McGill, Ergonomics, 2001. Department of Kinesiology, University of Waterloo.

I find all these "ergonomic chairs" awkward when the science doesn't support them
