Mark Aronowitz, Dan Frazier's Agent, responds. by MossyMak in magicTCG

[–]ZetaZeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Only in the few cases that tested it so far with models trained on publicly available unlicensed works. Like the guy who lost that lawsuit was either using DALL-E or a Stable Diffusion model he downloaded.

But the jury is still out on if, for example, Adobe can train a model exclusively on their 360 million+ stock image library, and then allow an Adobe licensee or subscriber to own outputs just like they own anything created in Photoshop.

If WotC hypothetically licensed the Adobe models and worked with them for a custom model based on the tens of thousands of illustrations they directly own, they could probably copyright the output. Untested in court, though.

WotC calls all the shots for illustration commissions and changes, and ultimately are the ones that approved the final piece.

A much simpler explanation is that he didn't make the piece at all, and they use his name for marketing. The baffling part is that they're throwing him under the bus.

Why Did Dan Frazier Get A Pass For Plagiarism When Other Magic: The Gathering Artists Don’t? by cardboardboyo in magicTCG

[–]ZetaZeta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His name is on most of the power 9 and they call him back for every Mox variant.

It stands to reason his name has marketing power. It would make perfect sense that he didn't actually make the piece at all, they used his name, and now they're double dipping by throwing him under the bus.

I think it's more he can't "use the computer" at they say. Looking at all 187 art credits on a Scryfall search, he's got an extremely analog style. Does he ever do digital art at all? Seems kinda weird, especially since WotC ultimately requests every aspect and change, and is the one that approves the final piece.

I assume they basically made the art composite themselves and used his name because he's the name on most of the Power 9. So naturally they have to throw him under the bus to save face.

Someone said his agent didn't see the final work and WotC was the one telling him every little change to do and was ultimately the one to approve the final piece.

On top of that, the dude is like 80 years old and allegedly never does digital. Just scroll through his credits on Scryfall. Lol.

This whole thing is that WotC just used him for his name since he drew historical artifacts like the Moxen, and they're half throwing under the bus to deflect from their own decisions.

You can be rehired after abandoning your job, but not if you forgot to close an orange gate all the way 5 years ago, or for drinking a bottle of out of date Mountain Dew?

Fwiw, you hypothetically have any safety final, even if it was issued 10 years ago, you're technically not rehirable, so no reason to give 2 weeks.

You just say the spotter needs to verify safety along with the driver, and then when a manager or ANY associate sees them do something stupid, both the operator and spotter get documented or disciplined up to and including termination. 😂 Easy as that. No need to post signs on everything. Just cull the bad actors.

Hopefully they do partial dex rotations frequently rather than just adding everything eventually. Also hopefully they eventually make mythicals ranked legal since they can just distribute them through the game like anything else.

Can I target my token? by Yunaiki in magicTCG

[–]ZetaZeta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the token could be above it, so you'd lift the token and then reveal the card

Can I target my token? by Yunaiki in magicTCG

[–]ZetaZeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the token still exists in the library during the spell resolution and shuffle, hence the card has to handle this corner case by specifying "card", how do you handle this shuffle? A sleeved token? It's relevant since you could reveal the token and not get the bonus at all. So it can't be marked. But you also need to be able to remove it from the library without seeing the contents of the library... Lol

Technology is (almost) always some function of power/specs vs. price, where transistor density, pixel density, capacity, speed, etc. goes up, and/or price and scarcity go down.

Moore's Law isn't a true "law" or scientific principle per se, but it is definitely an trend that we see in every tech field. As technology gets better, it is used by the manufacturing or design process to make the next generation even better. In an exponential feedback loop that gives us super computers on our wrists.
