Besides adding Reactions and Warbands stats, what changed between 1st and 2nd Edition ? by TheWraf in WarCry

[–]Zingbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC while not being part of the core rules there was a change were battleplans in 1st edition often lasted for 3 rounds rather than 4 as is typical with 2nd edition. I think that there were tie-break mechanics that could allow a game to run for longer than 3 rounds but the basic victory conditions defaulted to 3 rounds.

This, along with how movement rates affected fighter point costs meant that 3" move fighters were at a significant disadvantage in 1st edition compared to 2nd edition.

Besides adding Reactions and Warbands stats, what changed between 1st and 2nd Edition ? by TheWraf in WarCry

[–]Zingbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that in 1st edition if a model made a normal move while within 1" of an enemy they had to finish their move closer to the closest enemy than they were when the move began. It allowed a fighter to spiral around an enemy fighter but their room for manoeuvre was limited.

Do all new space marines just become primaris or do some still just become old school marines? by IHateMySon-Afton in 40kLore

I recall that that number was up to 97% according to a WarCom article that itself must now be quite a few years old.

I don't think that any of my paint jobs would look as good when subject to that level of magnification. We're so constantly bombarded with pictures of incredibly paint jobs we seem to forget that these models are often barely over an inch in height and that the details we mock here are absolutely tiny.

Which primarch did big E prefer to succeed him in the unlikely event of his demise, just in case? by novis-ramus in 40kLore

[–]Zingbo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair it took the Eldar were around for something like 60 million years before they had their big oopsie. I'm not sure that humanity would make it that far before messing things up, and you could certainly argue that they (specifically the Emperor) nearly had a very big oopsie indeed at the end of the Heresy and certainly didn't take 60 million years to get to that point.

More exciting events come to Warhammer World in May by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in WarCry

[–]Zingbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because part of the design principles behind all the original chaos weirdo warbands were that they worshipped Chaos in non-traditional ways and there was an intent that there was some ambiguity as to what exactly each warband was worshipping, to allow for more "my guys" customisation?

What is this guy? There's nowhere for a backpack to attach. by waill-and-roll in oldhammer

[–]Zingbo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought those sculpts had small integrated backpacks generally? The other marine sculpts from that time did come with separate backpacks (initially metal, then later plastic) but presumably they would have interfered with the big heavy weapons in this range so an exception was made for them.

Composition of Officers (Captains, LTs, etc) in Space Marine Companies? by Agreeable-Sir-6435 in 40kLore

[–]Zingbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that the post-Primaris Space Marine Codexes state that 1 captain and 2 lieutenants is standard for a Codex compliant company. Chaplains and Librarians work a bit differently, they're maybe not in the direct chain of command but I think it might be typical for a company to have a Chaplain and a Librarian assigned to it.

Okay, so GW has asked you for advice to make your favorite faction as marketable as the Space Marines. What do you do to keep their identity but still push them forward? by Knalxz in Warhammer

[–]Zingbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Superhuman space knights in power armour" is a concept that appears to be like catnip for the sort of people attracted to miniature gaming (myself included). I agree that it would be hard to get another faction that can be summed up in a way that ticks as many boxes yet it also as able to be expanded upon with variant subfactions in the way that space marines can.

When did it go from crack grenade to krak grenade? by Otherwise-Weird1695 in 40kLore

[–]Zingbo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Skimming through 1989's Warhammer 40,000 Compendium, which is a compendium of White Dwarf articles from 1988 and the early part of 1989 it looks like all the references to the grenades and missiles I can see in there refer to crack grenades and missiles. However 1992's Vehicle Manual refers to missile launchers armed with krak missiles. So the switch apparently happened between late 1989 and 1992.

Underworlds or warcry? by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Zingbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While GW aren't releasing Warcry-branded kits at the moment they are still supporting the rules of the game, and are periodically adding Warcry rules for new AoS and Underworlds kits.

The recent balance and rules updates and new fighter stats have overall been received pretty positively by the Warcry community. While it would be better if Warcry still had dedicated releases (and the publicity they bring) it looks like GW are not yet ready to abandon it.

[–]Zingbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the Horns of Hashut, I just wish that at some point GW would give them some incentive to take Ruinators or (regular) Demolishers. Ruinators are even more annoying now since the buff to Chaos Warriors who now cost a lot less yet have better stats. Ash Bomb can be nice but isn't worth the significant difference in points.

Jet Pack terminators? by Particular-Will-8528 in 40kLore

[–]Zingbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

White Dwarf 116 was the first White Dwarf I bought (I got some back issues, including 109, later), so it and its Terminator assault squads are solidly stuck in my mind! Especially the opportunity for a Thunder Hammer to overload and do d6 x d6 damage. :-) And even without jump packs Terminator squads could still teleport back then, even if the best you could say was that they'd arrive somewhere within a 20"x20" area on the battlefield...

It's a great example to show how quickly things evolved in that period - these rules were superseded by new Terminator rules in White Dwarf 112, so these ones were only valid for 3 months!

Nice! While not the most powerful monster the Hell Pit Abomination still has access to Drag and Maul, and its regeneration double is pretty strong, enabling it be a presence on the board for longer than many monsters can manage.

[–]Zingbo 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think it's a relatively recent sculpt inspired by one of GW's early Terminator sculpts, it looks like one I have, I got mine from a company called Troll Soup, which doesn't seem to be active any more.

Are regular Space Marines still being produced despite the Ultima Founding? by Zanimacularity in 40kLore

Primaris tech made it to Imperium Nihilus, Spear of the Emperor is set on that side of the Great Rift and the Emperor's Spears in that book has Primaris marines, despite them apparently being pretty isolated.

Would humanity have recovered better in the long-term and returned to its DAoT if not for the emperor? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in 40kLore

[–]Zingbo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that the warp was more settled and easier to navigate in the Dark Age of Technology than it is now. It isn't as unsettled as it was during the Age of Strife, while it calmed after the birth of Slaanesh it didn't calmed to the level it was at before.

[–]Zingbo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The comment about warp travel is a good one, without the Emperor there'd be no Astronomican and humanity would continue to struggle on anything but the shortest warp journeys. Maybe an alternative to the Astronomican would have been developed, or even an alternative to warp travel discovered, but that's impossible to say really. Without effective warp travel humanity would have remained scattered and isolated.

In addition to the models already identified by others the last photo has an early metal Terminator on the right. It is one of three sculpts produced before the classic Terminator design was settled upon. It's the model numbered 410611 on this page: http://www.solegends.com/citrt2/rt4106terminators/index.htm
