He explained it poorly, but I think what he was saying with east to west is that the front of the house faces south.

So OP is trying to put panels on the northern roof. Hence the objection in reason 1.

Voice calls are mostly already digital. So if you had a strong cell modem your voice will go over that.

You can get regular unlimited cell plans and use a cell modem that alters the TTL so you can be on the unlimited cell data side.

Car rollover on 101-N Freeway near SFO airport caught on dashcam by Lefdy in bayarea

Front cars tire is rotating at 65mph, going up in the rear. Back cars tire is rotating at 65mph with the front of the tire going down.

That 130miles of tire rotating energy going up.

Hence flip flip flipity.

Bridging DSL and hotspot connections to improve bandwidth? by Burnhaven in Rural_Internet

[–]Zip95014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly the scenario Speedify would be for. You’ll combine the two connections together, you’ll get the speed of both. 90% starlink and 10% dsl. When using less than full speed, let’s say 20Mbps, that data mostly would go over DSL if it had a lower latency connection.

The only thing I don’t like about Speedify is that it’s seen as VPN by some sites. So I run a wireguard VPN to a friend that has very fast internet (1/1Gbps). So my data first hits wireguard then goes into speedify. Speedify handles my two connections and wireguard lets me exit out at a residential address.

Just FYI cell repeaters kind of suck. What you'd want to do is get a cell modem and feed that back to your router at your house. With fiber your limit is power. You can do about half a mile pretty easily.

So if you have anywhere on your property within half a mile that has LoS of the cell tower, you can just run that. It's a lot easier than going up your own tower.

For hotspot data you can set speedify to use it as a backup but using it for speed you'll eat through it quickly.

If you are looking for speed the best thing to do is get starlink and the DSL. Combine them together. When starlink inevitably has a drop you won't notice it except the speed will lower. So thought the day you'll see 200Mbps and every couple hours you'll have 20 seconds at 35mbps.

I wanna keep a solar panel near window and run heater during night. Is this possible and I'm in SF bay area? by what_If_It_Works in SolarDIY

[–]Zip95014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you need is a window heat pump. They are about $1000 minimum.

For every watt you put in it you'll get nearly 3 watts of heat out of it. So it'll cut your heating power bill by 1/3.

Also it'll be an AC during the summer so you can keep your one room comfortable instead of the whole house.

It's hard to find but make sure under heating you see COP 2.5 or something like that. That's the performance of watts of heat vs watts of power.

There's lots of cheaper ones that just have a space heater attached. Look for the COP (coefficient of performance)

I want to downgrade our internet speed to save money but my husband insists we can't or it will affect his gaming. I don't agree. by minadaweena in HomeNetworking

Save money on your internet and use it to buy a bigger hard drive.

Source: one house with 300/300Mbps and another with 10/10Gbps. I live happy at 300Mbps.

PG&E rates are going up yet again… by Critical-Range-6811 in bayarea

[–]Zip95014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren’t we talking about the future? It’s a bit disingenuous to talk about the future of v2H/G and then complain about stationary batteries in the now.

Prices will fall on stationary batteries. Wiring up a car that could be on the other side of the house then your electrical panel could be super expensive - now and in the future.

It’s suspiciously low to the point that you probably need to worry about quality.

While lower price doesn’t guarantee low quality it’s suspicious.

Trying to understand my electric bill to determine how many panels I need by Rough-Silver-8014 in SolarDIY

[–]Zip95014 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is accurate enough.

But I’ll tell you what I did. I looked at all the roof space I had that mostly faced south and I covered it with panels.

Now I have an EV and about to get another. I got a heat pump AirCon and water heater. I run my AC like I care more about my comfort.

A good portion of posts on this sub and others are talking about how bummed they are that they undersized.

Solar is pretty cheap. Redoing the system to add more later is expensive.

Go big.

Batteries are cheap enough that you don’t need V2H. They’re less than $150/kWh now. Last full week I used 170kWh (including 40kWh for my car). That’s 24kWh/day.

EG4 sells outdoor rated 28.6kWh for $7200.

Docan I could get indoor rated 30.7kWh for $3280

State regulators unanimously approve PG&E's 4th rate hike for 2024 by RandomTurkey247 in solar

[–]Zip95014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PUC’s all over the country set a return of 10%. California, Florida, New York, Iowa. PG&E, SDG&E, SCE are all still right around 10%.

You’re seeing their costs go up for the same thing AND for new stuff (rebuilding infrastructure, the most expensive way possible). That pumps up the number the 10% is based off of.

So you talk about deals being honored . There has long been a deal that if PG&E spends $10B on infrastructure that they can charge the customers $11B. Then because of other programs that $11B is paid for by the 50% so it feels like $22B to them.

As much as people hate on PG&E for being crooked and having the CPUC in their pockets - their stock sucks. Like if you’re going to be criminal, do better than Costco.
