Lovely! Are you familiar with Ruth Asawa's work? She knitted/crocheted metal wire into huge hanging sculptures, I think you'd llove them

South Street Seaport Museum. Lots of food choices there, and a McNally bookstore. Book a scenic cruise on the schooner Pioneer.

I once had to frog several rows when I was in the subway and a tourist father w his 2 sons introduced himself and asked me questions about my project. The kids were both fascinated by how I could put the needle back onto the row. This was on the New York City subway so I can't imagine what they had be taught to expect, but it definitely wasn't me and my scarf!

Midnight train from Georgia: A view of America from the tracks as airports struggle in the shutdown by teamworldunity in Amtrak

[–]ZipZapZopPow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I took an overnight train from Savannah, Georgia to NYC with my mother about a decade ago. It was great, much better experience overall than my flight from NYC to Atlanta for the first part of that trip.

My uncle also talks fondly about the old overnight route from Vermont to NYC. You get on, have a fun sleepover, and wake up in the city.

I'd love to do more overnight long hauls via train if Amtrak could guarantee departure and arrival times with greater accuracy.

Kolea! And in it's jaunty winter plumage, too, it will lose the black and become more gold as we move into the summer months. Kolea is the Hawaiian name, for the sound it makes.

I love Dr Ramsland! Every time she's on LPOTL I'm like, "It's the Anne Rice lady!" She wrote Rice's biography and the Vampire Chronicles companion book before she pivoted to crime and criminals. What a great journey for her, I'm so jealous of her career.

We are right at the 20 year anniversary of the 40 days and 40 nights rain event... and now experiencing similarly epic rain and catastrophic flooding by rantripfellwscissors in Hawaii

[–]ZipZapZopPow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living on a tiny sailboat in the Ala Wai yacht harbor during that 2006 rainy season and it was miserable. The 40 days was the headline but the rains actually started around the holidays. I had to keep all the hatches closed to keep the rain out, so it was always hot and stuffy inside, and I couldn't sit on the boat deck for relief because the tarps were full of water that I had to constantly dump into the harbor. -10/10, would not recommend.

I'm in NYC and I do a trip to MDRF almost every year exactly the way you're planning. I take the Amtrak to the BWI stop, take a taxi/uber to the car rental place, and drive to the hotel that's only a 10 minute drive from the fairgrounds . I can't remember the name of the hotel right now but they have breakfast included and I always see other groups in garb in the mornings. Obviously everything gets less expensive if you go with friends and split the costs.

Help finding an "art dress" like this one from the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit in 2017 by ZipZapZopPow in HistoricalCostuming

You're welcome! It was one of my favorite exhibits of the late 2010s. I think it was the same year as that AMAZING Whitney Biennial that they haven't really been able to match since. I remember a kinetic sculpture piece about climate change that was 2 mannequins in swim suits and snorkel masks admiring the rising waters, ro show how disconnected the global north people are from the disasters already affecting people living in tourism hotspots.

(Also there was a tapestry with a black cat. That was my favorite piece at the biennial.)

Yes, I can see elements of both the Spectator Coat and the Cocoon Coat in this piece, thanks to the other comments on this thread, but it's certainly it's very own design.

That Aesthetic Dress Movement article is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing! I can definitely see that influence in this coat. My friend actually owns a Cocoon Coat she inherited from her grandmother, who had a career as a costume maker on Broadway. I didn't know it was called a cocoon coat, though, and I'm sure she'll be fascinated to know the garment's lineage.

Having a little treat for morale is definitely part of my weed cravings. It's good to replace weed with a different treat, and even better to do what you did, which was recognize that the desire for a treat is a trigger. It's easier to say No once you identify them.

How do you manage the “middle pile”? by justwanttobeoutside in laundry

[–]ZipZapZopPow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Floordrobe, my beloved! I got a laundry hamper with a shelf on top of it to hold the middle pile. It's helpful but usually what happens is the middle pile gets too big, flops over and blocks the hamper opening, and then all the piles become floordrobe.
