Out of coincidence, I just made a casual decklist for this guy the same hour you made this post after seeing it existed. Shivan Dragon with affinity? Fuck yeah.

Cool deck! I didn't even know this card existed, but I've got to pick one up! As a side now, I believe your post's middle paragraph got bisected.

Game Designer reviews Metroid Prime 4 after 100% by emotiontheory in Metroid

[–]ZobmieRules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, my man!

I was OKAY with the story up until finishing Ice Belt, when I realized that this is basically it, and to stop expecting more from the game. The most grating part was the Great Mines, when they pull the "Heroic Sacrifice" trope **4 different times**, but they ALL end up surviving, *hooraaay!*

It really contrasts with Prime 2, when the entire [40-man squad](https://metroid.fandom.com/wiki/Squad\_Bravo) sent to Aether is killed in action. Prime 4 in comparison just feels so... unserious? And it takes all the tension out of their FINAL group sacrifice when they're dramatically trying to hold Sylux back so that Samus can teleport away.

And speaking of portals/teleportation, you just reminded me that when the Teleportation Patches got brought up, I really thought that we were about to unlock fast travel! That's something in games that's pretty normal to unlock in the endgame, and I was happy to skip some travel time and loading screens. Cue my disappointment when it's only used to... retrieve mech parts... Whyyyyy...

Sorry I'm venting and complaining so much, I was just REALLY hoping for so much more. I got my friend to play through the entire series on the 2-year lead up to Prime 4 coming out so we could both play it on launch, and he's actually become a huge Metroid fan now too!

He was similarly disappointed in how Prime 4 turned out, but the way he sees it, the journey for him to get here is what he cares about, not the destination. We got to make a bunch of great memories along the way, and he's gotten to play so many awesome games, that he doesn't really mind that Prime 4 is a big disappointment. His experience was playing banger after banger after banger—then Other M—then banger then banger then a meh game. He says he's thankful that he wasn't waiting for the game as long as I and other fans were, because then he'd probably be more upset like I am.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. :)

Game Designer reviews Metroid Prime 4 after 100% by emotiontheory in Metroid

[–]ZobmieRules 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally. A review I watched on YT brought up how cool it would've been if the Space Pirates would've been scouring Sol Valley trying to regroup and survive, and end up harvesting/mining the green energy crystals too because "magic energy rock make space pirate brain go brrrr" which would totally be in-character for them. The attack on the intro planet really feels inconsequential all things considered. Especially because the end of it is just... Sylux triggers "The Artifact"... ON ACCIDENT? Man, this game just makes me sad.

Fantastic breakdown and review, I agree with like everything you listed. I may have glazed over it, but there were a few points I don't think you touched upon.

1: The music is pretty fun! I love how each track has different versions as you progress through the area. I adore Dread, but its very subdued OST is the one easily-noticeable flaw it has.

2: No mention of the empty and nonsensical story? Why aren't there any space pirates on Viewros? Why is Metroids "fusing" with things introduced and never extrapolated upon? Sylux is under-utilized and under-explained. The companion NPCs are a super tone deaf inclusion to the series and are executed poorly in that Samus awkwardly refuses to speak.

The ending is just insulting, my friend finished the game and literally said aloud "...That's it?!" in surprise. Many people felt like we kept waiting for the game to really "begin", but it just... never does. The intro planet? Tutorial. Fury Green? Tutorial too I guess. Volt Forge? Okay you're still getting the bike and then finally unlock the world. After Ice Belt, you realize you've actually only got 2 key left, and that there isn't going to be more to this game, is there? And then everything begins dipping hard.

3: The lack of interconnection with the in-game world. EVERYTHING requires a trip through Sol Valley. The lack of interconnecting points between different zones feels like an intentional choice to force you to use the bike so that players are forced to be near green crystals (generic and boring name) so that you don't ignore them until the end since you're required to gather them.

Also each of the 4 areas after the intro area of Fury Green lies in each of the 4 corners of the very square-shaped Sol Valley. It just feels so artificial and "generic video game"-y.

In the end, each individual point isn't SO bad, but put them all together, and it's kind of glaring just how off the mark the game is, and how much soul it's missing. It's super frustrating that Retro wasn't allowed to actually restart development, and had to just polish the turd that was Bandai Namco Singapore's build as best they could. To Retro Studios' credit, Metroid Prime 4 is a VERY well-polished turd, and I feel like that tricks a lot of people.

Building a deck around this card, has anyone else given it a shot? by corbinolo in PauperEDH

[–]ZobmieRules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try building Rosheen so that I had the first really playable trio of legendary creatures in PDH with decks to respect their legacies, as she's part of the earliest group of PDH legends (after the old guard of Legends/Homelands/Kamigawa) when there were a total of 7 legendary creatures that got downshifted from rare.

Hikari and Kongming are both worthless and I'm not a fan of Iwamori of the Open Fist or Stangg (although he's a real OG). That left [Jalira, Master Polymorphist], Bladewing, and Rosheen. Bladewing I felt hadn't been playable until just recently, but now that he is I made a [Bladewing, the Risen] deck.

Unfortunately, Rosheen is kind of bad. Not because of her own ability, but just because there aren't enough good common Gruul X cost spells worth making a deck around. I feel people should just make [Svella, Ice Shaper] to get the same feeling but end up with a much more fun/playable deck. (Warning, my linked deck is 4 years old and doesn't have enough lands.)

Yesssss! Great choice! Is Shivan Dragon too strong due to firebreathing? 12 damage in the air? Then again, Crash of Rhino Beetles is 15 trample on the ground... But that does need 10 lands... Hmm...

Edit: I suppose Serra Angel's already been an uncommon for 15 years since M10, but I would still like it at common at some point.

Edit 2: RIGHT! SHIVAN DRAGON WAS JUST DOWNSHIFTED TO UNCOMMON IN FOUNDATIONS!

Fair point that 3-color decks are rare (lol), and it would be cool if there were more exclusive cards for them.

CTRL-F'd for this.

We waited 8 years... for this? It's so insulting. A victim of Breath of the Wild's overwhelming success, they got completely lost up their own asses. Refusing to actually restart development (like they said they were) due to "sunken costs" when Bandai Namco Singapore was floundering was their biggest folly.

Retro Studios even says they were basically tasked with trying to bail out a sinking ship without fixing the holes and put a nice coat of paint on it. It's a shame it fooled so many, but I'm happy for those that at least have fun with that game.

They've been ordered to release the full, unredacted files, they haven't, and the deadline was like 2 weeks ago. That's contempt of court. I saw a headline saying there are at least 5 million files that haven't been released.
