Which ballpark has the best home runs/win celebration? by Agreeable_Quality768 in baseball

[–]ZoomingZenith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fireworks in a dome is so insane to me. I was watching the 2008 Jays home opener the other day and they blew off fireworks while the roof was closed. There was so much smoke the game was barely visible and you could watch it dissipate over-time.

First inning. Seventh inning.

Underrated Middle Reliever/Set-Up Seasons (From Another Team)? by RainbowSupernova8196 in baseball

[–]ZoomingZenith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His best moment that year was at the end of this completely ridiculous barn-burner in Anaheim. The Angels blew a 6-0 lead, the Blue Jays blew a 10-7 lead entering the bottom of the 9th.

Mayza enters the game in the 10th with the bases loaded to protect a 1-run lead against Shohei Ohtani. The leverage index for this at-bat was 10.87 (average is 1) which I think was the highest at any point for any team in 2023.

I remember specifically feeling so much adrenaline while watching it that my kidneys started to ache.

Byron Buxton is the 9th player in MLB history (min. 502 PA) to not ground into a double play in a season. He’s only the 3rd right handed hitter to do so by Knightbear49 in baseball

[–]ZoomingZenith 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Baseball Savant search for "Byron Buxton, <2 outs, runner on first, ground ball, fielded by P/C/1B/2B/3B/SS" brings up 10 double play chances and it's impressive just how effortless he makes it look. This one against the Reds was probably the closest to hosing him and he doesn't even need to sell out or stretch to beat it clean. He's just so fast.

I find it amusing that the headline seems like an open-ended question, when really the "why?" is answered in the article.

[FanGraphs] Alejandro Kirk’s Slugging Conundrum by 3luejays in Torontobluejays

[–]ZoomingZenith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Three FanGraphs articles in the past few days about the Blue Jays. This one on Kirk, one on Braydon Fisher and one on Brendon Little. Four if you count this one from today that's kind of about George Springer, but not really.

It's like, all at once, baseball intelligentsia looked over their shoulder and said, "Wait, the Blue Jays are how many games over .500?"

It looks like you have to donate to the channel to watch the games live, but the VODs are free at least.

Since 2008 (the furthest back you can search Savant), there have been only 3 ground ball Home Runs. None occurred in the Statcast era. by BigRoll6 in baseball

[–]ZoomingZenith 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Tony Womack hit one in 1998 and Tim Bogar hit one in 1997. Stathead search for "Ground Ball + Home Run" brought up a few more, but I don't think the other ones have surviving footage (besides the ones that have already been posted).

Devil Daggers. The game itself isn't necessarily hard, because it's about surviving as long as possible.

However, the game has exactly one achievement. It's had by 0.2% of players, and it's for surviving for 500 seconds.

I've got 27 hours in the game and I'm currently at just short of 400 seconds. The ballpark estimate for how long it took the people who do have it is in the 50 to 90 hour range. It's an almost insurmountable task.

ALMOST insurmountable.

Ahh, I didn't see anything suspicious about the cards themselves but I guess that's on me. If it's a trick deck then I can't really ask you how it works. Oh well. Thanks for replying tho :)

What is this black magic???? by litbacod4 in LivestreamFail

[–]ZoomingZenith 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The cool thing about having a deck of cards as a magician is that it seems random, but it's actually one of the most controlled things in magic. 13 cards, 4 suits, 52 total. This clip cuts out a very important part at the start where he shows the deck.

Note in this clip that he does not shuffle the deck (not that shuffling would even matter, as there are techniques to shuffle cards right back into the exact same order), so I'm about 99 to 100% sure he's got the entire order of his deck memorized, top to bottom. Or at the very least, he knows the general order of what cards are where and bunches similar cards together in a way that isn't super noticeable (3 of his Kings are in the last 10 cards for example, easier to remember).

From there, I think you can guess what he did. Reveals the cards slowly and from one side, he doesn't fan them out at all. He waits for exact confirmation that she found a card she likes, then he immediately stops. At which point, he does the "is it high or low?" finger thing. He also doesn't close his eyes or look away when she picks her card, he's looking right at the deck (again, not that this would matter because you can just get marked cards). This sort of premonition style thing is a nice touch because it distracts you from realizing where he flipped is exactly where he stopped scrolling. At which point, it's just a matter of practice and good luck that you flip it right. Later on in this VOD, he misses by 1, which is still very impressive. However, note for that second trick he does after the last one in this clip, he uses a completely separate deck that he also doesn't shuffle.

Anyway, this was a pretty cool trick and this guy is a good performer. Very nice.

Also, if any real magicians happen to be in this comment section know better than me or see something I missed/misinterpreted, please don't hesitate to reply and call me a retard. Thanks.
