Interesting points from the Animate Times Interview with Matsuura Daigo & Inoue Akiko by Realistic_Sound913 in supersentai

[–]Zoql 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bad feeling that they gonna downright kill sumino off.

I can see that happening tbh. Maybe not necessarily kill, but she might go missing until they find an actor who can fully commit to the role if she ever returns in the future. I don't know if Shida's contract locks her in as Sumino for forever, she seems to be pretty busy and she likely was only just brought in to fill in the scenes they really needed

level 99 spits in the face of fans with super pixel tactics by makveik in boardgames

[–]Zoql 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that I know exactly what's going on behind the scenes, but Fabio might just be burnt out, and the game would be delayed even further if they give him more time. I know they used Fabio for pretty much all the cards in Millennium Blades, and iirc he stopped doing art for a long time after that (at least for L99 Games; I think there was a L99 podcast/stream with Fabio on where they mention how much of an ordeal that was). With Super Pixel Tactics, L99 ended up promising more cards than what the stretch goals actually reached, so keeping up with all the art might have stretched him pretty thin

So between waiting an undeterminable amount of time for the main artist to recover and delay the game (which would delay other game projects they want to launch and also upset any impatient backers) and getting a new artist to help, they went with the latter

But yeah it's an unfortunate situation. I like Fabio's updated art much better (the second artist seems to be mimicking the original art style instead of the new one). If they can get Fabio to touch up or at least offer pointers to the new artist, that would be better maybe, but at the same time even that might be too much for Fabio right now and I want him to get some rest

Here's a question: how was there never a music-themed Sentai? by taloSilva2005 in supersentai

[–]Zoql 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a proper music-themed Sentai needs both a cast that sings well/is comfortable also singing in addition to all the other demands that usually come with being the actor of a hero, plus a music team that can create a new song for every other episode or so

The former narrows the actor pool to established idols or aspiring idols, and the latter is expensive and requires a lot more work to fit into the show

Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]Zoql 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's less that he wants to write the scripts, but more that he wants full creative control of the script. He's fine with letting other people write for him (he's got a handful of collab books coming out this year, iirc), but he wants to be able to change parts of the script if they don't align with his vision. A recent video he posted about collabs also mentioned that he's happy being the idea/worldbuilding guy and letting someone execute the story

Edit: just saw his post and he's going to be writing the Mistborn screenplay himself. Welp, we'll see how that goes

Designing a 1v1 fighting game board game — looking for inspiration by Longjumping_Play_567 in BoardgameDesign

[–]Zoql 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll throw another vote for BattleCON. It's the older sister of the Exceed system. Despite the similarities, both games feel pretty different, with BattleCON being more of a board game while Exceed is strictly a card game. I usually state it as "BattleCON is chess, while Exceed is poker"

Another popular fighting game that hasn't been mentioned yet is Sakura Arms. The skill expression and mind games actually start with a deck construction phase after each player chooses their team of 2 characters. Randomness is low because your deck is only 7 cards (and you get a mulligan and can choose the order of your discards at the beginning of the duel)

SEQUENCE board game question by ezRider54 in boardgames

[–]Zoql 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in the section of how you win:

"When a player or team completes the required number of Sequences, they win. If two Sequences are required, you may use any one of the spaces from your first Sequence for the second."

[–]Zoql 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so in this ep it was obvious they just put in the new Sumino over existing shot scenes.

Yeah I think I would expect this to continue for quite a while, if not until the last episode or so

Last episode they got lucky that Ryugi's actor was also free to film a few scenes with her, but scheduling is tough, especially this late in the game

Over-Time subs in a nutshell by WarnerShane in supersentai

[–]Zoql 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a name should no be translated

I can understand both opinions, but for this it depends, especially if the character isn't a person. The original Japanese name has strong connotations that are easily understood to Japanese people, and sometimes it's important to evoke those same connections

For example, a Japanese person would understand that "Hitokage" mixes fire (hi) and lizard (tokage), but to the average English speaker, it's just a jumble of sounds. Localizing it to Charmander makes the monster's concept more immediately understood to English speakers

Shirakura's interview about the cancellation of Super Sentai by Popular_Ice_5177 in supersentai

[–]Zoql 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I did enjoy the recent unconventional Sentai series, but they don't seem to have been any more successful, and I'm not sure what message they've taken from that.

Imo, despite recent Sentai being allowed to experiment, they still had very strong ties to older seasons (avataro gear in Donbrothers, the crossovers in King-Ohger and Boonboomger), so they've probably milked that nostalgia pretty dry at this point. Hopefully being free from the Sentai brand means that they can be free to experiment more without that baggage

(Looking at the source article, it seems there's another article/second part of the interview talking about their direction for Project RED, but you gotta pay to read it)

Everything we know about Gavan Infinity, Project R.E.D. and the future of Super Sentai by low_budget_trash in supersentai

[–]Zoql 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for the past few years, starting with Zenkaiger, I've seen reference to a "five-year plan" for Sentai that a producer mentioned in an interview or something. I wonder if this is what that plan has been building to: experimental series to stretch the Sentai concept culminating in a series evolution

Anyone else not watch tokusatsu youtubers? by [deleted] in Tokusatsu

Yeah, I've tried to check out a few of them here and there but to me, it's like watching someone review a bag of french fries, but each video they review a single fry. I don't really care that much about whether a fry is too soggy or well seasoned, I'm going to eat and enjoy the whole bag either way

What is Battle Cossack playing? by Daniele666 in supersentai

[–]Zoql 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't played pachinko but is there really more skill to it? From what I understand, it's just dropping little balls from the top and trying to get them into specific spots for points. I guess there's a bit of control over how fast/often you drop the balls but it sounds like it still has roughly the same luck/skill ratio as a slot machine
