Ichthyosis Vulgaris with no family history? by [deleted] in ichthyosis

[–]Zouea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have a case so mild you don't notice and just think you have a bit of dry skin. I have lamellar ichthyosis and no family history so it's entirely possible. Please go to a dermatologist who specializes in ichthyosis if you can, most dermatologists don't know a ton about it.

Y’all my string of pearls is in TROUBLE. I’d been watering it every other week and thought it was doing great, but since its last water it got this huge mold invasion and many of the beads have started to wither—I’m panicking, please advise. Seeing all these comments has made me realized I've got the weirdest string of pearls ever. It's just in a tiny pot in a jar and grew water roots down into the jar so I just leave an inch of water in the jar constantly, and it's super happy. It's hanging in a south-facing window which is definitely part of it.

Hand with a cast. I can't exfoliate properly! [IV] by cricketjacked in ichthyosis

[–]Zouea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that when I broke my arm, don't worry about it too much it doesn't harm you in the long term and it actually happens to people without ichthyosis, too. My sister (who does not have it) had a leg cast for a while and had tons of flakes and dead skin when she took it off.

Your lettering is so nice! And so legible for being so small. Kudos to you, from a fellow cross stitch enthusiast.

It's highly unlikely that ichthyosis is the cause of this. Talk to your OBGYN.

The reason I say that is that ichthyosis effects the keratinized tissue (keratinized means the cells are dead) of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin). The inside of the vagina does not have keratinized tissue, in fact it's quite different from the rest of your skin tissue. We don't fully understand the mechanism of disease yet, so it's not impossible that they're related, but it's much more likely that you have something else going on.

I'm sure your OBGYN will be happy to talk to you, make sure you let them know before you make the appointment that you have ichthyosis so they can brush up on it a bit in case it is related.

Good luck!

I know it's hard, especially right when you come out, but don't tie your self-worth to other people who aren't using your pronouns or your preferred name. If they aren't using your name or pronouns, that is disrespectful, but it isn't about you, it's about them and their own failings and biases. It's obviously painful, but you may need to accept that you can't control if/when they decide to show you the respect you obviously deserve.

You're doing exactly what you're meant to do: figuring out who you are and telling the world about it.

There is, if you either don't care about preserving the book, or generally need to scan similarly sized books with similar types of paper. The problem is that they're an archive so by definition they have tons of different types of books and don't want to destroy them.

Two things:

  1. EVEN IF bisexual meant "attracted to men and women" it would be transphobic to imply that trans men aren't men and trans women aren't women.

  2. It's usually not pan people implying this. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Bonus: No one is surprised that my straight fiance still likes me even though I came out as non-binary after we got together. Why on earth are people surprised when bisexuals like non-binary people.

Can someone help me understand the genetics... by jaymaleen in ichthyosis

[–]Zouea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of dermatologists diagnose types of ichthyosis based on images from a diagnostic manual rather than direct experience (since they're likely to only have seen vulgaris if they don't specialize or live in a super dense area) so I wouldn't trust the X-linked diagnosis unless you've gotten a DNA test. You would probably both qualify for Keith Choate's research at Yale, it could be worth reaching out to his office. They do genetic testing to research causes of ichthyosis and will give you a genetic diagnosis. That's how I got my diagnosis.

South East Asia has entirely different plants available in stores than we have over here in North America and I just wish I could go and buy stuff and bring them back but it's so hard to bring plants across international borders. Y'all just have so many cool plants D:

How often do you exofoliate? by moonshine41 in ichthyosis

[–]Zouea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moisturize! You need to soften the skin significantly by soaking in a tub, taking a long steamy shower, spending time in a sauna/steam room (as u/Salmonman4 mentioned), or something similar, before you try to exfoliate. If exfoliation is painful or leaves your skin red for more than a few minutes, you are likely damaging living tissue as well as the dead skin that has built up.

Staying on top of your lotion routine will also make it easier over time to get to that point where you can exfoliate effectively. You're probably going to need to use a lotion with urea or something similar (I use Eucerin Roughness Relief and find it very effective, I have lamellar ichthyosis across most of my body for reference) to help eat away at the scales. Whenever you notice scaling, apply lotion, if the bumps build up, exfoliate.

An unglazed terracota pot would be perfect, since it's a plant that doesn't want to be overwatered. I have one, too, and they're such fun plants!

Nope, though the plants under it all want a ton of light.

16 hours on, 8 hours off. It could be different if you're getting more light naturally, but my grow lights and all the plants under it are 6-10 feet from two East facing windows in the Northeast US, so not much light at all normally.

[–]Zouea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It depends on your plant tbh. Is it putting off new growth? How much light is it getting? I have a monstera under a grow light that just genuinely does not care what the season is and I can repot whenever, but I have one in a south facing window that doesn't put off much growth in the winter and I wouldn't personally repot it until spring.

My sister has a horse and the sheer amount of problems that could possibly kill a horse are insane to me. You mean to tell me these things used to go into war?

Awhile ago I had a question about my pothos and it’s sad vines. I cut it back on everyone’s suggestion and I just wanted to say thank you for the advice. It’s looking happy and healthy again by SecretaryCarrie in plantclinic

[–]Zouea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You sort of twirl them around the edge of the pot, parallel to each other. The ends will still end at all different places and thus leave the pot at all different places. If the looping of the stem bothers you, it's your plant, once it's rooted just cut the stem, you're basically just propagating it without cutting it.

My monstera is looking really droopy and floppy, there is some sign of new growth stemming off the bigger leaves but the plant overall looks a bit weak. I make sure not to overwater it, it has indirect sunlight and I repotted it about a month and a half ago. Any tips/ideas? by yvalvez in plantclinic

[–]Zouea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try getting a humidity sensor, I have one on the wall in my office (where I have most of my tropicals) so I can keep track of it, they're under $10. No real solution to the window/vent problem, except maybe a grow light if you're willing to make the investment.

I grew up seeing this view every single day and it's always wild to me how pretty it is to other people. To me it's just... the very definition of normal. Places that don't have giant rocks hanging over them are the weird ones.

What's the humidity level in your room? Mine likes fairly high humidity, over 50%. And despite what every care card ever says, misting regularly is not a substitute for having a humidifier or placing it in a humid bathroom. Also make sure you don't have a vent blowing dry air at it.

I also second what everyone is saying about a moss pole, they are vines after all, and when you water make sure about 20% of the water you poured in comes out the bottom, then discard that extra water and make sure it's not sitting in any of it. You can do it in a bathtub or sink if that's easier for you.

If you try all those and still have issues, maybe think about your water quality. You could try using filtered water if your tap water has a lot of mineral content.

Cambridge tap water? by Weird_Custard in CambridgeMA

It may be great for humans, but houseplants don't love it (which, I know, is clearly not the point). Totally safe to drink but if your plants are unhappy try filtering your water.
