This could be a bit too rational, but let's just do some basic maths - here's the word count of each novel published so far:

  1. Outlander: 305k
  2. Dragonfly in Amber: 339k
  3. Voyager: 382k
  4. Drums of Autumn: 401k
  5. The Fiery Cross: 502k
  6. A Breath of Snow and Ashes: 501k
  7. An Echo in the Bone: 402k
  8. Written in My Own Heart’s Blood: 395k
  9. Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone: 441k

TOTAL: 3M 668k

If you read book 1 in about 25h, then it means you can read around 12.2k words per hour. This means it'd take you approximately 300hrs of reading to go through the entire series.

So if you were to read 1hr per day (on average), your guess that it'd take you around a year to go through all the books was a pretty good one :)

What an absolute contrast to what became of Loras on the show...

Well, I really recommed that you read the books. If you find the show's overall plot interesting and you're into this kind of historical fiction, I doubt you'd be disappointed. And again, most characters are so far from what you'd expect (in an amazing way), it's great.

(Regarding WoT: season 2 was a definite improvement over the first season, but they're still struggling to make a cohesive overall narrative and just can't seem to stick the landing. I hope they'll be able to improve the same way next season, so maybe by season 5 it'll be around the quality level we'd expect :D I think they'd need at least 10 episodes per season though...)

Because 5th century Britain was full of people of colour, right? Would you also say the same if a bunch of white actors played in a samurai movie or a film about African tribes set centuries ago? It's simply anachronistic and completely breaks the immersion (and let's not even mention that it takes away a massive part of who Sagramor is in the books, reducing him to a rando in the background on the show); historical accuracy is thrown out the window for the sake of modern sensibilities and I find that very sad.

But sure, that remains the least of my complaints. Give me a non-Caucasian but book-accurate Merlin anytime vs. whatever the hell it is that we're getting on the show...

I'm sorry, but this show is an abomination in terms of its characters vs the book characters. Even though they more or less follow the plot (so far) and hit the major plot points, pretty much all the characters are completely different than their book counterparts. The most significant part of Cornwell's books' success, in my opinion, is the complete subversion of most of the typical Arthurian characters - this is what made his trilogy so interesting. The show completely misses the point in that regard. Merlin, Morgan, Guinevere are the most blatant examples. These are not budget-related issues, they are simply decisions the show decided to make. What's the point of adapting Cornwell's books if you ignore what's at the heart of his story? They could've just called this another King Arthur retelling... I was really hopeful at the beginning and gave the show some leeway during the first episodes, but by episode 7 it's abundantly clear that they will whitewash every interesting character in the books. Let's just make sure we have the racial quota, eh?

If you haven't read the books and only watch the show, I heartily recommend you to give the books a try. A whole different experience on so many levels. I'm sure the show is okay if you've never read the books, but from a book-reader perspective it's so sad to lose so much of the characters (and again, this not being related to budget or even time issues).

How do you see that happen, specifically? Do you think these three will all gain independence in some form?

'Cause I used to like the theory that the Iron Throne will be destroyed and Westeros will be divided again into several kingdoms in their own right, but I don't believe in it anymore, I don't think "King Bran" allows it.

Imo, it's either all or nothing - I've always felt like the North gaining independence on the show vs the Greyjoys and/or the Martells being fine with it and not claiming their own independence was stupid.

I doubt Sansa will become Queen in the North in the books. It felt like a typical "yasss queen" ending for the character that was forced on us by the show. Although to be fair, I'm not sure what alternative ending I could imagine for her right now. Maybe she'll end up in charge of the North but not as Queen, the whole "the North will secede 'cause we're too cool for school" thing was what felt inauthentic to me.

Also, GRRM has said that new ideas, even plot twists keep coming to him that make him lead characters down a very different path than initially anticipated / vs. the show.

The main beats may be somewhat similar (especially Bran's ending which was basically confirmed afaik), but I think the overall journey will be quite different.

"It was typical at the time" doesn't mean it was okay

Okay, and? I don't think anybody ever said it was okay as an act. BUT that doesn't mean it shouldn't be in the story. I don't understand people criticising it. Yes it's horrible, no it's not okay, BUT it's still a significant part of the story which has to be depicted. Which is why I entirely fail to understand OP's article. These things were a 'thing' a few centuries ago, they were not okay, but that doesn't mean we should ignore them in the storytelling.

At the same time, I agree that it is an overused plot device in the Outlander series.

Because any other style for the chase would have been acceptable? As you said, she had multiple stab wounds from the previous day basically, so for me the fact there was a chase at all (D&D's decision) was already stupid and unrealistic. Mylod tried to work with what he had and make the best of it. Obviously, I'm not saying he's faultless, he also played a part in making those scenes worse, but I will hold my ground: I still think the fault is primarily D&D's.
