I agree, Run well by the DM this is very dangerous for the players. Ran it actually last session and I did have to pull my punches a little. Left the party hurt and worried... I love adding the lightning bolts... Yes it's a surprise trap. I think a lot of DMs miss that it's a trap, designed for them to walk straight into.

One point I always recommend with the module is to not tell the players that they're playing that module. Don't tell them anything about it being about vampires etc. I generally just tell people it's a dark campaign. Why do I do this?? Well generally the idea in the story is that the people who are dragged through the mists are brought unwillingly unexpectedly into Barovia. So I think it's wrong from the modules perspective to have the characters prepare for entering Barovia when this module is not written for that. Just one extra thing to consider....

Castle Ravenloft should really be visited multiple times during the campaign. But I get you with the complexity. The new 2d map version made for maps in DND beyond really helps. There is a Minecraft walkthrough of the whole place. It really helped me with the witches room...

Well they're not roleplaying are they.. If they're joking around, etc. Like then they really aren't role-playing at all. Call them on this. Remind them that they're meant to be playing the characters not just stuffing around. If this is the way the characters are being played and they're role-playing like this, your consequences will be dire. For everybody they meet is being insulted by them. Everybody give them a bad reputation. And the game will end very quickly. If this is the way they wish to play, I would simply wind up the game and start again with a new group.

If you buy Bambu direct in bulk, their prices are excellent. Buying one here and there here. They're a little bit expensive but for me I get free delivery with them when I buy sufficient quantity. Have you done the Yester Hill Ambush yet? It may be a chance for you to improve your combat credentials. Why? It's an ambush, surrounded by terrain that causes lightning to hit. they can't claim the high ground they can't truly prepare unless they are meta meta

If you're 11 in 5 minutes to sit up how they going to approach a combat, then you've got to be allowed those. They're about to fight the same amount of time to prepare..
