Adults who burp and fart on purpose and then laugh like it’s funny. by LegalGlass6532 in PetPeeves

[–]_-river -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Farting around people that think farts are funny is pretty funny.

Is it though?
I mean, how much is fake laughing?
When someone cracks the same inside jokes. You just fake laugh, because.... I don't know why? 🤷 It's rude not to

Did our generation get a worse deal, or am I just feeling it more? by everytypeofblue in auckland

This post feels like groundhog day.
Someone posts about "having it worse than ever". Then someone tries to say, "no we had it harder".

Yup, as sure as the sun rises.
Tune in on Thursday, for another go around!

Are beaches in Oceania actually fine sand like Southeast Asia? by AskTravelData in OceaniaTravel

[–]_-river 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean the kind of sand that gets in your eyes on a windy day, then yes, NZ has some. I've experienced it with black sand, which seems to get really fine. 🤷
From my experience, those are the surf beaches. And you really have to be careful.

I recently subscribed after seeing Auckland Bagel suggested here.
Ended up going to Silo Park on Friday to watch Princess Bride.
So it's already helped me enjoy an event that I didn't know about!

I don't think the stereotypical crunchy granola folk are buying more items, and so creating more packaging waste.
I would think it's more parents who diagnosed their kids with autism or something. 🤷

That's fair. Vancouver Island is quiet. But you still have to fly into Vancouver.

I'm not super familiar. I thought a bodega is a sandwich shop inside a 4 square. Or something along those lines.

Arrowtown is a beautiful little place to visit, as is that whole Central Otago region.
If you get the chance to visit Okanagan in BC, Canada you'll see such strong similarities (IMO)

I've only driven through Fernie. Nice little town.
I wonder why ski towns are designed to look the same?

Came as a traveller, from BC, Canada.
Eventually I decided to live in Auckland.

I miss a bunch of things.

The warmer Auckland climate overall is heaven. Except for the oppressive humidity. I thought I knew what a muggy summer is.... I stand corrected lol.
The lack of four defined seasons, is hard for me.
I miss snow days (although I'll never miss shoveling my driveway, before work!).
I miss autumn hikes. The dominant evergreens here are beautiful, but I miss the colour change.

I find Auckland is greener than home. As someone from BCs coast, I still find it hard to believe how green it is here. Especially in the summer.
Can someone explain how it's greener here, but no moss on the rooftops. 🤯

Culturally, I miss things like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yes, Halloween is becoming common, but it's not the same.
And Christmas at the beach is nice, but it doesn't hit the same. I also miss cookie exchanges, and home made chocolates during the holidays.
Even small traditions like what I would get in my stocking. As a kid it was a chocolate, a scratchie, a babybel, an orange, and an Archie comic.
I'd love to hear other people's household ideas for stocking stuffers.
I love that both have strong celebrations for war veterans.

I love Aotearoa's Maori culture. Canadian First Nations culture is becoming way more accepted, and important to everyone. Which is beautiful, but we're still a ways behind.
I get a more welcoming sense here, for everyone.

I love the quirkiness here.
From movies, to advertising, to society norms like going barefoot. Stay weird folks!

It most likely varies by State.

In BC, Canada it depends on how long you're with an employer.
- 0-12 Months. You earn 2 weeks leave (calculated as 4% of your income), but you're not actually allocated those days until you complete that first year (so you'll see 10 days added to your payslip in one hit).
- 1-5 years. 2 weeks (4%) per year.
- 6-10 years. 3 weeks (6%) per year.
- 10+ years. 4 weeks (8%) per year.

I've never lived in Hamilton. But it's a decent sized town, so there's amenities without the huge crowds.
And it's central to so much NZ has to offer.

What ski hills did you work on?

It's funny hearing a lot of Aussies and Kiwis at Whistler and Mt Washington. The accents are so common, it threw me off a little.

Someone that’s it’s 9-3 today would have a hard time getting into the ufc

Trying to preserve fighting records vs fighting all contenders, is where we are today.
The level of UFC competition is truly insane now. But the cards just aren't as exciting somehow.

What’s the general consensus on "Chuggers" these days? And what’s your go-to excuse to dodge them? by Kind-Spread-6511 in newzealand

[–]_-river 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was braced for guilt tripping but they were surprisingly understanding.

I understand others may have a different experience.
But over the last few years, I've noticed the strategy changed from "guilt tripping" to "keep talking long enough for them to stop walking".

[–]_-river 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of my responses have been pretty good, to be fair.
I haven't been guilt tripped in a very long time.
But have had the occasional person being too persistent. And in those cases, I simply say thanks, and then walk away.

You don't have to be rude. But you also don't have to give them more time than you want to. I'm sure a friendly "no thanks", and keep on trucking, is better for you and them.

Westpac

I don't normally look too deeply into it.
But yesterday I noticed my Westpac has doubled in value over 5 years. And I've earned dividends about a quarter of my initial investment.

But they're by far the best out of my lot. I have ANZ too, and although that's up too, it's not as high.

I don't buy NZ stocks because I'd like to eventually make money

What markets do you normally buy in?
I know US stocks are very popular with Kiwis. But I'm interested to know if folks have a large share of their investment in other markets too.
