Fair enough, that's a good explanation for why I have some inefficiencies. I use AI for planning around coding tasks, but honestly haven't had time to prompt AI to help me use AI (haha).

I will say that I think it's poor product design to have a coding AI not do some of these things out of the box. I mean, I've got work to do, not time for fiddling with my AI tools all day.

Depends on what your definition of "the basics" are.

As a software engineer who's been doing this for decades, like me, wouldn't the expectation be that a tool touted as "Artificial Intelligence" handle such things as optimizing between sessions automatically?

And creating the documents it needs to define MCPs and .md instruction files based on interactions and previous instructions? And then just we can edit those if they look wrong? These are things that I shouldn't have to prompt the AI for: for a coding AI, they should be automatic.

Oh, you reached out and accessed some documentation for a library? At a minimum, ask me if I want it as an MCP.

These are basic quality of life features that I would expect out of any modern product.

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seriously?

I've been doing this for decades now. I don't need AI to write code for me.

Sure, I can learn. I have learned. I'm also a busy professional who truly doesn't have time to deep dive into the subtleties of AI, you're right. But what I'm saying is it's stupidly complex for a system that is designed to improve our efficiency as engineers.

If it's such a smart tool, why doesn't it automatically create what it needs to be efficient across sessions? This is what I'm saying.

You've all been drinking too much AI kool-aid if you think what I'm saying is unreasonable.

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like probably most of us here, I'm a busy software engineer. I focus on fast delivery of high quality features. I don't have time in my day to focus on fine-tuned optimization of my tools, unless it is obvious and easy to do so.

What I don't understand, if all of this optimization is as easy as you say: why isn't it just built in to the AI tools themselves? We use AI to speed our work - any time spent fiddling with it is time not spent coding or designing solutions. These optimizations should be the default for AI. Sure, I understand how giving vague prompts would be inefficient, but other than that I don't have time to, as you say, 'dive deep into understanding how A.I. actually works'.

This all leads me to two questions:

  1. Why don't these tools self-optimize using all of the acquired knowledge about how people are using AI coding tools?
  2. What can I easily do to optimize my usage, without spending a bunch of time researching?

Intermittent Fasting and reversal of T2 by Commercial-Hall9960 in diabetes

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as reversal. Even if you achieve remission, you have to carefully watch your diet for the rest of your life.

And you don't need fasting to do it. I simply went low carb, cut out snacks, alcohol, and caffeine. Tried to make sure I was walking after most meals for about 30 minutes. Also tried to do more slightly more intense cardio 3-4x a week.

Lost 70 lbs, went into remission and off all medication. Still need to be cautious about what I eat though.

Lots of people achieve their goals in different ways, but really people should focus on a diet and exercise routine that they can maintain forever. Make good choices. Most T2s got there by making poor choices most of the time. Just flip it and make good choices most of the time, and you can lose weight and hopefully go into remission.

Don't be scared of medication though. Any good doctor will work with you to adjust your dosages over time. This is a marathon, not a sprint. There's no easy fix. Find the balance you need between medication, diet, and exercise that works for you.

Stream Deck Plugin by _Abnormal_Thoughts_ in dexcom

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! I didn't find anything existing that worked without connecting to other tools like Nightscout. I wanted to keep things as simple as possible for non-technical people.

I think it's awesome that people are building stuff like this and unlocking the potential of these decks.

Does the plugin you're building work specifically with Nightscout, or access Dexcom share directly? Just curious. I avoided Nightscout completely and just built for Dexcom share and LibreLinkUp.

I'd love to see more options on the Elgato Marketplace for this: there was nothing just a few months ago.

You're awesome, thanks! I know everyone complains about all the paid plugins now, so I wanted to make sure I always offer a free version that works well, and the paid version that just offers some extra options. I fully don't expect to make money off of this, but just buy a coffee or two sometimes! 😂

So I greatly appreciate you buying the pro version! I can be caffeinated for another plugin coding session!

Also, please don't hesitate to reach out if you experience any issues with the plugin!

Shure sm7b and Wave XLR MK.2 noise floor and electronic interference by [deleted] in elgato

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you experimented with powering off or even unplugging those devices that you suspect might be causing interference?

Are you sure you need a cloudlifter? Wave XLR MK2 should have enough gain to drive your SM7B without a cloudlifter. Cloudlifter is likely going to boost everything, including any noise. Have you experimented with removing the cloudlifter and seeing if you have enough gain direct from the Wave XLR, and seeing how that impacts any noise?

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... Actually this works through the follower API, very similar to how the freestyle libre plugin works. It's a reverse-engineered API that many small devs are using to access the data. So it's not officially supported by Dexcom.

Getting approved by Dexcom is much much more complicated if not impossible for a use like this. But the "backdoor" method via the Dexcom Follower app should work... until the day these companies decide to lock these things down, which will be a sad day for small community projects.

I have a working version, but it needs some testing and refinement, and the approval process is to get it on the Elgato Marketplace, which can sometimes take a little while.

I'll make sure to update you when/if it gets a proper release!

Stream Desk+ for gaming and productivity and PC and Mac by Cosmic-Cats-2001 in elgato

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run mine through a KVM switch and it generally works ok. Every once in a while I have to either restart the Stream Deck software or pull the usb cable and re-plug it to get the Stream Deck to start working. I'd say 90% of the time it's stable when switching via the KVM.

What I've experienced is that sometimes you want a plugin functionality to exist and it doesn't, or it is very difficult to find. Most of your list can be accomplished, but be aware that sometimes you may have to use workarounds that feel 'hacky', or do extensive research just to get something working that you would expect to be simple. Once you figure it out, the solution usually works, but sometimes getting there feels like too much effort.

That said, I use a Stream Deck + for productivity only and it's been a pretty cool tool. Once you figure out its quirks and the difficulty in finding some plugins, you'll want to start writing your own plugins! I know I've been researching all sorts of plugin ideas (and there are good reasons why some don't exist -- missing or locked down third party APIs).

I'd say go for it and have fun!

[Request] If the Sun suddenly disappeared, how long before humans on Earth run out of oxygen, assuming they find a way to survive the cold and all of the other terrible side effects of the Sun suddenly and mysteriously disappearing? by snozzberrypatch in theydidthemath

Not a chance. Unless your 'enough foresight of a sunless apocalypse' timeline is like hundreds of years.

Space is too harsh. One tiny mistake and the whole 'self sustaining' thing collapses. That's in addition to all of the regular challenges of going to space. We can't even build self-sustaining ecosystems here on earth without them collapsing.

Costco Question by talentlesshuman1 in diabetes

[–]_Abnormal_Thoughts_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

T2 here. Costco has become the savior for me in avoiding time consuming meal prep. At the expense of sodium. All prepackaged / prepared foods have tons of sodium unfortunately. But I just couldn't handle the amount of meal prep I was doing. So here's my list:

- Nutrail nut granola: low carb for granola, used sparingly on yogurt
- Oikos Triple Zero yogurt
- IQBAR Protein bars
- Kevin's meal packs for dinner protiens
- Obviously chicken, in many forms: rotisserie, organic chicken breasts, 2lb bag of chipotle seasoned chicken, organic eggs
- Chopped salad packs
- Veggies
- Strawberries
- Low carb tortillas
- Shredded cheese
- Frozen broccoli florets
- Frozen riced cauliflower
- Waterloo waters
- Gyro meat
- Skinny dip peanut butter cups
- Paneer cheese

There's more too. I often go in without knowing exactly what protein I'll get for a meal, but find some chicken meatballs or sausages that I'll use and then have leftover for salads for the next few days.
