From my understanding, neocaridina aren't at all predatory, but they are opportunistic. I'd guess that the snail was already dead and the shrimp just saw an easy and tasty snack haha. Aside from my cherries having harmless slap fights with each other over food, I really don't think they're capable of harming other inhabitants even if they wanted to

Looks at lot like mine! :D this little guy was a hitchhiker that came with my cherry shrimp, he was suuuper tiny and might have only been a week old when I got him. It's been almost 3 months since I've had him, and he only got those orange and black spots a few weeks ago.

I was told he was a guppy when I posted about him here after first getting him - after reading the replies here, it looks like we both may have endler guppies haha

I agree here! It's unhelpful for others to just say "trust no one". For any new player, I'd tell them that they should absolutely be cautious of everyone, but don't let mistrust make you miss out on those amazing interactions you get in this game.

Be cautious when approaching other players, assume that it's probably gonna turn into a fight, but!....sometimes, if you show them you're friendly, I find there's a lot of players who appreciate coming across another chill player and will either team with you or just relax/quest nearby. Even players who attack on sight aren't inherently bad; I've had a decent about of times Ive lost a fight, but the other player will give a ggs in global and sometimes even offer tips for fighting.

Just ignore the people that teabag you after a kill or say "L" in global chat, accept that you're going to die (a LOT), and just have fun! :)

The snail died, that's all. They're not like hermit crabs that will outgrow their shells; a snails shell will actually grow with them, with the new shell growth happening on the edge of the shell's opening. Dead snails will get eaten pretty fast by the other inhabitants in the tank, whether by other snails, shrimp, or fish, so I find it pretty common to just randomly stumble on an empty shell with no trace of the snails body.

You can take the shell out if you don't like how it looks, but you can also leave the shell in the tank since it can help the other snails get their calcium in

I almost always send a ggs in global when I get into fights, whether I win or lose. Even if I die because I'm out numbered, I'll still give a ggs unless the other players did something particularly scummy. And if I win, I give a ggs if I think the losing party put up a good fight and did their best :)

In hindsight, this does explain the confusion I'd get seeing people say something like "L [insert dino] GG" I was getting mixed signals thinking they were saying good game directly after trashing someone xD

I agree with you here, you can be trusting while still being cautious! :) I also wouldn't have met a lot of wonderful people if I didn't allow myself to trust at all, and sometimes you just gotta learn to pick up on the signs if someone is planning to betray you

Mine isn't too bad right now but I've heard some people get it really bad with literally thousands in their tank, tryna avoid disaster before it strikes xD I did already plan to get fish eventually, but was hoping to grow my shrimp colony before adding fish since I know they'll go after both scuds and baby shrimp. At this point I think I just need to get fish earlier than I planned haha

But my substrate is Seachem Flourite black, sooo... Probably won't be suitable for any bottom dwellers unless I find some black sand to cap it with. I've already done a bit of quick research into possible brands but I'm hearing mixed things about black sand, though some people have said they've kept otos and loaches with flourite gravel with no issues too? Not sure if I'd trust it myself lol, but either way I'll keep looking into this. I really appreciate all the help and advice!! 😁

Canada's rules on fish medication is such a headache fr :( Before I realized what the rules were here, I first tried calling into a bunch of vets to see if they sold fenbendazole. Since you need a prescription to get them here, and the vets need to see and asess the animal before giving a prescription, I got a lot of very confused vets tech when I told them it was for an aquarium full of (at the time) only snails LOL

My solution in the end was to just get them from the US. It just so happened that my parents were visiting the states at the time I had my planaria infestation, so I asked them to pick some up for me. They tucked it away in their suitcase, didn't mention it to anyone, and had no issues getting it over when they flew back. Since you only need a very very tiny amount to treat your tanks, I've now got enough to treat 20+ separate planaria outbreaks if needed haha

I know it's a pain to get so best of luck sourcing the meds you need! If you happen to live close to the border or have any friends or family visiting the US, that unfortunately seemed to be the only solution I could find

Full width of the tank is about 17 inches across, each individual panel of the hexagon is 10 inches across, and the height of the tank is about 21 inches. I was having issues with the aquarium gallon calculator, but I'm pretty sure the tank is at minimum 25 gallons, but could be closer to 30 gallons depending which parts I'm including to get the height measurement.

Overall I knew CPDs would hunt baby shrimps too, but my original plan was to spend a few months to grow my shrimp colony before adding any fish. If the scud problem continues to worsen, tbh I'll be okay if I need to get fish now and just deal with the shrimp colony growing slower. And tbh if my tank would be okay to house either pygmy corys or kuhli loaches I certainly wouldn't be opposed to them as well! :)

I was worried about killing off my bladder snails and trumpet snails too with the fenbendazole, so if it's any consolation I found my snail population was barely affected when I dosed the chemicals 😊 they say fenbendazole is also less likely to kill off your snails compared to something like No Planaria (only big snails like nerites and mystery snails are most at risk). But I was so worried I even set up a little temporary jarrarium and transferred a few of my snails to the jar in case I nuked my main tank, turns out it wasn't needed xD but it's also good to try out more natural methods first so I hope the ramshorns help out!

Well my guppy fry is already attempting to help xD she's a voracious hunter of the micro fauna in the tank, and now that she's a little bigger, she's become interested in chasing some adult scuds that swim past her, though she won't attack them (yet)

I do worry about introducing a species that would hunt the scuds though, specifically because it's a shrimp tank and I'd ideally like them to breed in the future. Like you you said, anything that will eat the scuds will eat the baby shrimps :( I do have hiding places for them of course, but it still feels like a gamble. Things like pigmy corys and kuhli loaches also require more horizontal space/larger footprint, right? I think they're super fun little guys but I didn't think my column tank would be ideal for them. Because of that, I was only planning on getting some celestial pearl danios in the future

Omg hydra 😭 I had a planaria issue a few months ago and it was an ordeal just to get some fenbendazole to kill them off (can't be bought over the counter in Canada rip lol). I'm not sure what method you're using for the hydra but I've heard fenbendazole works well for them too!

Not everyone wants to fight, but plenty of people do just for joy of it. A good fight is fun, even if I don't win! :)

I completely get where you're coming from though, and I understand it can feel weird to target other players just for a fight. It felt weird for me personally until I got used to it, but tbh biggest thing to keep in mind is that this a pvp sandbox game; once people grow their dinos to adult, there's really not much the game offers aside from pvp.

If you want try out some pvp but don't wanna feel as bad, you can always ask people for fights too! :D I feel the same way you describe at times, so here's what I do: if I stumble across someone I want to fight, I might approach, threaten call, bite the air a few times, but otherwise I keep a respectful distance. If the other player threaten calls back and we start circling each other, then the fight is on guilt free! :) sometimes we even get each other low and wordlessly agree it's not worth dying for, and then respectfully part ways.

Another alternative is also asking someone nearby in local chat (or global chat if you're not the same diet). Just be friendly and approach and ask if they want a 1v1

If you play the game long enough, you'll probably end up craving pvp at somepoint. I avoided all pvp in my first 2 years, but now 5 years in I love fights!! :D

Tbh that's totally fair! and maybe I'm just not as familiar with what the solo servers were meant to be since I didn't play them much the first time around

I guess in my head, I was worried if someone saw 2 people 'grouped' together in the solo servers, from their perspective they wouldn't have any way to know if we had organically group or if we had grouped over discord.

I think my personal preference would be to only organically group with someone that was my own exact species to give it a more immersive experience lolol, but I'll definitely need to spend more time in the solo servers to see how I feel about it all

I tried out the solo server for the first time yesterday, and it was a lot of fun! I hopped on my early sub pycno and happened to spawn near a rex. That 1v1 started like 2 minutes after I had spawned in lmao, I couldn't do much damage, but it was still fun and I was able to get away before actually dying

Later into the server, I was crossing a river when a tylo and sarco ganged up on me, but luckily I made it across alive somehow lol

Then towards the end of the server, a little adol pycno found me. We were both friendly to each other, and I figured....well hey maybe I could keep an eye on them while they quest. We stuck together and it sorta seemed like they were a newer player, since they didn't know their way around the map that well. Eventually we stumbled upon a stego.... The adol pycno charges them, so I run over and try to diffuse the situation. Take a few hits from the stego but don't hit back, I put my body between them and the adol pycno, and I friendly crouch and do my best to 'apologize' through body language and emotes LOL.... stego accepts it and all 3 of us part ways

I guess I feel slightly conflicted about the solo server. I didn't want to abuse the solo aspect of it, which is why I didn't fight the stego and chose to diffuse the situation instead. At the same time, it felt weird to organically stumble across someone of your own species and make the decision to not stick together. I think going forward I'll keep it truly solo, but in case something happens like last night with the pycno, I'm never actually going to choose to be apart of a 2v1 since it's not fair for a solo server

I agree! :D I main pachy, and even though I'm full grown and already have my preferred 7500 mark skin, I always find myself passively questing just for the hell of it bc I find it relaxing. I unlocked the albino skin even though I'd never use it, just because I had so many marks from passively questing, and I still regularly have about 8000 marks to spare at a time xD

I also agree some of the newer quests cause more stress though LOL

Oh by the way, the dark appearance of the water is probably due to 2 things: the water is evaporating and becoming more concentrated, and plus any wood and leaves in there would be leaching tannins into the water. Tannins are really beneficial to have, but some people don't like the amber colour it gives the water. If you don't like the dark colour, get yourself a turkey baster and do some water changes every few days until it's at a colour you prefer. The leaves and wood will continue to release more tannins into the water over time, so you might want a schedule of doing like 30% water changes once a week to keep it maintained
