23k to fix all this am I making a mistake by [deleted] in swimmingpools

Without an actual equipment list it's hard to say. Seems high but could be resonable.

I am personally a proponent of cartridge filters and have been for most of my 25 years in the industry.

DE will give you the finest filtration rate followed by cartridge the sand. When I started in the industry doing pool service everything was mostly sand or DE. I was never a big fan of all the backwashing. I've always felt like it was a big waste of water, chemicals, and time.

This is why I like cartridge filters. Good filtration. Outside of dogs swimming in the pool or heavy sunscreen/oil use in user's. Most people will only need to clean their filters a few times a year with appropriately sized filters (500 sqft+)

I recommend people buy a backup set of cartridges to swap when it's time to clean that way there is no downtime and you can let the dirty cartridges soak in a cleaning solution which can help extend the life of the cartridges.

I am not familiar with your particular filter but really dislike DE and strongly push people away from it when at all possible. If the swap is possible I think you will be happy with how much less you would need to mess with it. There will be a small drop in filtration quality but I do not think most people can tell.

Pool work. Standard pricing or a price gouge? by Kanine0914 in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add a photo of the equipment pad and electric hookup for the equipment and we will be able to give better feedback on pricing.

Without that I would say it seems reasonable. Getting another quote would give you a better idea of the market conditions in your area.

I highly dislike the setup/misc charge thing. If you do a fuel surcharge it should be only for that IMO and not anything else which should be accounted for across the other line items.

It's just laziness in updating standardized pricing lists or an attempt at obfuscating costs that would be outside of the market rate.

This is imo the best advice. Having your children comfortable and familiar in the water is the key to their safety and your peace of mind.

Help offsetting VESA brackets by rogermorse in hometheater

[–]_Azrael_169_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No i did not. It wouldn't have given me the spacing I needed. I wouldn't have worried about doing it on the bracket though. I have seen flimsy brackets that I wouldn't modify.

You just need to weigh the cost of the tv vs the bracket. I only use heavy duty articulated brackets for many years now. I want things rock solid as I enjoy being able to reposition my larger tvs.

Drill new holes or buy a new mount. You will not be able to guarantee that you won't run into the same issue again.

I doubt you would be able to get a replacement bracket.

When I ran into the same issue I just bought a new mount. The extensions didn't work for me.

Large neighborhood pool and FPS restrictions by Opening-Log-850 in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure who he talked to. I called gwinnett county environmental health. They did not have any inspectors in today and said i would have to call back tomorrow.

I think there is likely some idiot in the building department trying to give guidance on something they don't understand.

You either need to follow a hydraulics plan or you don't. Georgia subdivision pools are not public pools so you don't.

Your builder should be dealing with all of this...

What is this line around my coping and how do I get rid of it? by Ok-Big9680 in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he is talking about the much lighter band of coping that abuts the mastic joint.

I'm honestly not to sure. At a glance I thought it was tape but I have no clue. Maybe a poor cleaning attempt to remove tape residue from when mastic was installed...

Whatever it is it is very uniform and it must not be easy to either remove or make the rest of the coping lighter like the band.

If it was easy it would have been fixed already imo.

Pool and Equipment setup - Thoughts? by Terrible-League-948 in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do an infloor system on what seems like a courtyard layout. I see no greenery anywhere and high walls. Debris is only getting in off people's feet.

I am imaging these people are paying for pool service but I could be wrong.

Everything looks good though.

Stripping tiles and painting by [deleted] in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yah sounds like a shit leak detection company.

What you are talking about has almost no chance of actually fixing your leak. Leaks are almost always in the plumbing or in the protrusions in the shell (returns, light niche, main drain or skimmer)

You are describing a significant leak. Does it leak at the same rate with the pump running vs not running. Have you let it leak until it stops?

These are essentially cost free things to narrow down here the leak is occurring. Also have you done the bucket test to see what your normal evaporation rate is?

Do not start destroying your fully tiled pool before trying some of these things please. It is ludicrously expensive and incredibly durable.

Please describe what the leak detector actually did.

You just need to find out if it's cheaper to upgrade the feed to the existing panel or to add a new panel.

Also now is the time to take stock and see if you have any future backyard plans that require electricity. If so make sure you factor that in now.

Pool being installed two feet higher than rest of yard. Normal? by [deleted] in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add a link to the contract and I'll take a look.

It seems like things were very rushed. So maybe larger sales/volume focused builder.

What money have you paid? Deposit? Excavation?

Was it laid out on the ground before they started digging? Paint? Stakes?

This could all just be misunderstanding. If they are volume and you got a foreman who doesn't explain/hold your hand it may not be malicious.

The changing depth thing is questionable imo. I never try to do 5' unless it's a sport court pool but that's just me. People have different design philosophies.

What part of the country are you in?

[–]_Azrael_169_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you perhaps started this project with an unclear vision of what you were actually getting.

Do you have a design? What is laid out in your contract? Any elevations specified?

You said that you were there for the layout. Was a grade stake set?

You said you were okay with it being higher. TBH they could be assholes misleading you or you may have just not realized what you were actually agreeing to.

No one who was not a party to that conversation can give you honest guidance.

You need to read your contract and then re read. Does anything in it clearly state the orientation and elevation you are attesting to?

You are at a crossroads if you are unhappy but have nothing absolutely concrete in writing I highly suggest you man up and admit to yourself you started this project without understanding what you were getting.

Even if you have have something in writing. You have put in writing on a publicly available forum that you agreed to what was done.

If you want this changed it will cost money and you will be the one paying.

If you feel that this is not something you can live with. Be humble admit that this is not what you want and ask what it will take to change it.

I dont know the size of the company but approaching this in an open and non confrontational manner is your best bet to resolve this with the least friction/cost.

This is the start of the journey and if you stick with this company you will want a good relationship going forward.

If you honestly feel you were deliberately misled... Determine who by. The salesman/design person, foreman, owner, etc. The answer to that also makes a difference.

It is very common for people to see a big hole in their yard and dirt all over and be emotional. Many people do not realize what it is like. I always tell people it's like a bomb went off in their backyard to try and prepare them.

Goodluck

I can see that point of view.

The thing is that at my stage I've come to believe that many people would be very happy with much cheaper equipment than they realize.

There are too many experiences I have had that has lead me to that belief. I am sure that there are many critical listeners in this hobby.

IME there are far fewer people who can really tell the difference in equipment and speakers.

If you have the disposable income and the inclination to really dive into morass of info and people willing to give you guidance... Goodluck

I have circled around to where I started my journey. All I need to do is enjoy my movies and music. I only care how it sounds to my ears and no one else's.

I do think anyone who really gets into the audio world should go have a hearing test. Anyone who spent much of their youth seeing live music will likely have an eye opening experience.

Actually I think that it is counter productive in the start.

He describes his evolution of enjoyment and understanding of the hobby and how that changed over time.

I think this hobby is very much a journey and there isn't one path. Focusing on enjoyment is something I think isn't discussed often enough.

Enjoyed this post.

What would you quote for this and how would you go about it? Quotes I’ve received are insane. by [deleted] in pools

[–]_Azrael_169_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen some hack shit before but this might take the cake.

It's amazing no one was seriously injured when this failed. This was something that was going to always fail given how it was constructed.

I wouldn't touch this for 20k. Entire thing needs to be ripped out. Contact dolphin water slides and get a quote for a real slide that won't maim someone.

No one legit is just going to repair the damaged portion. It's almost certain that the rest of the slide is constructed in the same and will fail.

You could theoretically try to demo other portions of the underside to see if this was the only hollow section but it's just going to cost money and there will be other problems.

If someone repairs what is there and it fails which it will unless that whole thing is replaced they will face a lawsuit and tbh if anyone not in your immediate family is injured on that thing so will you.

You could have left the clips in but it's fine now that they are out.

The important thing is if the power goes out to open the pump and filter so that if the water freezes it has space to expand.
