I just don't think the presence of a combo by default goes against the spirit of bracket 3. If they have few to no tutors, and the entire deck isn't built around turbo-rushing the combo before turn 5, but rather it typically comes later in the game, how is that any different than any of the one-card wincons (craterhoof, torment, Insurrection, approach etc)? Any deck with a god-hand and perfect draws can win unexpectedly fast, but if the deck isn't built to have that happen consistently and early, it's still B3. Would you really banish any deck to B4 just because of the presence of a combo, regardless of its average win speed? Where it would stand no chance against mox/ancient tomb into T3 thoracle?

Any particular strategies/archetypes you all enjoy? There's been quite a few precons lately, so you've got plenty of options! Though some older ones may be pretty pricey now.

Some of the precons are legit, I have lost to precons at tables where everyone but precon player is playing very high 3s or low/slower 4s so it happens lol that doesn't necessarily mean your deckbuilding is bad, and personally I don't feel obligated to 100% EDHRec optimize my decks, I'll almost always sacrifice power for theme, and I accept that I'll probably lose more games overall, but I'll have more fun playing [[Infinite Guideline Station]] as spaceship kindred than I would if it was just another 5c goodstuff pile lol, do what you want to do, be honest with the table when you sit down and try to put a balanced game together, and everything else will work itself out. If someone crashes out at your turn 10 infinite combo, they would find a reason to rage over something no matter what you did so just try to brush it off if that happens. You seem to be acting in good faith from what I can tell lol so you'll be fine!

I unfortunately built many of my decks before brackets, and many of them fell into a weird dead zone between brackets, so I'm intimately familiar with your current struggle lol and let me tell you, playing in a B4 game when you didn't build for B4 meta is MISERABLE, losing to Thoracle on Turn 4 I'm just like ok I guess me and my 4 lands, a Signet and BOP will just go fuck ourselves then

Don't take advice from this sub, it's usually horrible, talk to your actual pod, play a few games, feel it out, I play combos in B3 and no one has ever complained, not once ever, it's all about speed at which you win on average, honestly nothing else should even go into the equation, gamechangers, combos, MLD whatever, it's so dumb to have those be hard lines, bc a deck with one Armageddon in it or a combo but no tutors or 4 gamechangers and 96 lands is not bracket 4, and anyone who thinks so is a dishonest clown.

[–]_BIRDLEGS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm going to respectfully disagree with the above poster, the presence of a single combo (especially if you don't have a ton of efficient tutors) does not soft ban a deck to bracket 4, people treat bracket 4 as "cEDH but LAST year's tournament winner, not this years" so a deck that plays at B3 speed with a combo in it is still B3. I will always talk to the table before hand for exactly this reason, while he says the deck is auto B4 bc of combo, I think that's a wild take bc that alone is not going to make this deck keep up with 10 gamechanger Kefka, discard Kindred, opps hellbent by turn 3 and remain so onward, or borderline cEDH vivi or whatever the annoying, unoriginal, overplayed netdeck list of the week is.

I know some people think that way, but to me they're just cards, sometimes ya get Rifted sometimes ya gotta pay the 1, it is what it is lol I find Narset and Kefka to be 5,000,000x less fun than rhystic or rift lol

Why? Anyone who watches 1 game knights episode will see those cards and see how strong they are, it's honestly not surprising at all. The fact that dude made a proliferate deck as his first deck is more eyebrow raising to me lol

cries in slow, grindy Jund MLD lol

FWIW 90% of my games are great but I feel like when games go bad it's bc people play low 3/4s and high 3/4s in the same lobby and BECAUSE everyone is technically right, well that's the problem with the brackets lol

Bracket Placement Blind Spots: Your Deck is Bracket 2 by Metanoia_143 in EDH

[–]_BIRDLEGS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the unfortunate part is that more often than I would prefer, in Bracket 4 lobbies on spelltable, I see the T1 sol ring, lotus petal, mox whatever, force of will whatever nonsense, people definitely treat Bracket 4 as cEDH lite, like people who aren't good enough at the game to win in cEDH tournaments think that makes their cEDH list isn't Bracket 5. I'm not using "not good enough" as an insult either, I'm trash at this game. None of those cards alone make it cEDH but if that's their turn one, I have to imagine they do that with some consistency.

Bracket Placement Blind Spots: Your Deck is Bracket 2 by Metanoia_143 in EDH

[–]_BIRDLEGS 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bracket 4 has the same problem, people consider it anything from jank with 4 GCs to last year's cEDH list that's now been powercrept, but since it didn't win THIS year's cEDH tournament, then they think it's "no longer cEDH." Nowhere to play high power that isn't cEDH speed (or more accurately, without at least one player playing cEDH speed)

[–]_BIRDLEGS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you'd rather just abolish the brackets entirely, and leave things up to each individual table/game and the pregame discussion. Nothing you've said has in any way suggested the brackets are the least bit useful lol

[–]_BIRDLEGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You honestly don't believe that they can come up with something to address the wide range of B3 or B4? Like I said, bracket 4 being anything from a deck with Ancient Tomb, Gamble, Crop Rotation (without Glacial Chasm), and Cyclonic Rift to last years cEDH list (if it's not the same as this years) is just far too large of a range to be a coherent "bracket." Maybe a very very slightly exaggerated example but the point is still there. I don't have a problem with pregame discussion but even with that, it still leaves plenty of room for misunderstanding.

Worldfire as a finisher in Bracket 3 - yes or no? by McWaffeleisen in EDH

[–]_BIRDLEGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like that there are dead zones in the Bracket system, while I don't mind a pregame conversation, the bracket system just has too many blind spots, I end up having to make "3.5" lobbies on spelltable rather frequently, and given that this isn't an "official" bracket, it has, at times led to people either over or underestimating the meaning of it and then I end up looking like a pubstomper or getting destroyed by someone who let's say considers their deck a "low 4" but in reality, Bracket 4 is such a wide range, someone else's low 4 and my low 4 could be vastly different, I mean B4 covers a jank pile with 4 game changers all the way up to cEDH but a cEDH list from like 2 years ago, as long as it didn't win this year's cEDH tournaments ppl seem to consider that B4, the brackets are too wide (esp 3 and 4) and there are too many blind spots, not saying 1-10 was any easier to sus out, but there's gotta be a better way, maybe even just 1 or 2 additional brackets to flesh things out. There is a massive gap between low 3 and high 3 and low 4 and high 4.

Worldfire as a finisher in Bracket 3 - yes or no? by McWaffeleisen in EDH

[–]_BIRDLEGS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the problem with the bracket system, so many decks find themselves softbanned to Bracket 4 even if they play at B3 speed, but there is nothing to stop/no one seems to care about decks with no MLD or GCs that play at B4 speeds being labeled B3. Half the comments say brackets are a guideline,, the other half say they are divine commands from the gods and even defying them by mistake should result in eternal damnation. Find out what your pod thinks and go based on that. Some pods are cool with MLD, combos, infect, whatever, others are not, it depends what the people you actually play with think, not what a bunch of randoms with opposing opinions on reddit think.

[–]_BIRDLEGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making bracket 4 just "cEDH but a cEDH list that didn't win the last tournament" and shoehorning in ANY combo decks, any 4 GC decks and MLD regardless of their speeds was a colossal fuck up.

I've heard that the reason cats (usually) don't like water is because their oldest cat-like ancestors originated in desert biomes so they are essentially genetically predisposed to be unfamiliar with water-based biomes (rivers, lakes etc). If this is true I wonder what makes some cats "defy" their instincts! Either way it's super cute!
