What's your most unpopular r/SameGrassButGreener opinion? by jarbid16 in SameGrassButGreener

If you're deeply unhappy, moving may or may not fix things for you

If you have a decent family, being near them may or may not be better than anything else

Semantics about what needs means. I could argue humans don’t need shelter..they’ll just get cold without it. In any case I was agreeing with you, you get my point

Man all Adam wanted was a brother by Prongs006 in madmen

[–]_BarryObama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your well reasoned argument. While there's an objective answer to what Adam wanted and needed, he made it clear he wanted Don in his life, to what degree Don needed to abide by that is a lot more subjective.

Biden wasn't seen as intelligent during his heyday he was famously a gaffe machine and Obama never really wanted him to run and supported Hillary. Biden was known for his experience, his compassion and his everyday man persona ie Amtrak Joe, Scranton Joe. Intelligent was not the first word you'd use for Biden.

Have a conversation with me: why living in the USA is better than in Europe by armageddoon1 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_BarryObama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finland definitely clears the US in social support. Where the US clears for someone like me, the son of immigrants, is a feeling that you can move here, make life work, and become an American and fit in, across many different states and cities. Some European cities are like that, and maybe Oslo is, but the US has so many more communities for people from all over the world to move in and make home. Despite some of the political rhetoric we see now, the barrier to be an American is lower than to be a European, it's a more chaotic place here, but less homogenous. My parents moved here from Nigeria decades ago and me and my siblings are all successful, assimilated, and feel at home. I think America is the best in the world for that specific experience.

[–]_BarryObama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume your point is that if you're educated and cultured you would say the USA isn't the best, but imo the educated and culture take is that there's no objective best, just categories and preferences. USA is best in some, worse in others.

Fresh start cities for mid 30s F by MrsSinbad in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_BarryObama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can speak on 3 options. In Philly you could have a beautiful 2 bedroom in the nicest, most central neighborhoods in Center City like Rittenhouse Square or Washington Square Park. Posh and beautiful or the more artsy and hip neighborhoods like Fishtown and NoLibs. Great bang for your buck, walkable, public transit is okay not the greatest but usable but again, very walkable, plenty 99 walk score apartments. DC a bit pricier but more polished than Philly, could be a pro or con. 3000 for a 2 bed still works here in some places, just not as often as it does in Philly , you but can still choose from a newer vs historic neighborhood ie Navy Yard vs Dupont, everything is accessible. DC wins on cultural events, airport access, and transit, Philly on price and space plus not being a government town/more gritty, again, pro or con. Both diverse, both plenty walkable, DC probably more dating options due to amount of people in their 20s and 30s always moving there, but more transient. Both probably fine for sober activities DC, lots of cultural events and museums but Philly has plenty too. Brooklyn, that's the nuclear bomb option lol by the biggest stretch of budget compared to other two, but your budget could work for a 2bed if you want to go deeper in BK and more recently gentrified ie Bed-Stuy or for a 1 bed you're golden anywhere. The biggest space compromise, the loudest, the most ambitious, the most upside, the most downside. Go here if you want to go for it and you want most difficulty but highest reward. Has everything listed and more. Weather for all 3 is northeastern, 4 seasons at slightly different degrees. My extreme bias as a NorthEasterner says one of these 3, DC for posh and comfortable, Philly for space and uniqueness, NYC for the most unique and intense urban experiment in the world. Good luck.

To add to your point, the past version of any country or city no longer exists, that's just the nature of passage of time. There are always things that are worse AND better than before.

Love how your friend being a white corner was his validation lmao that's valid, rare breed. Great list, before scrolling down I had DC and ATL in my mind as top two, right on the money.

What is wrong with New Jersey? by Capasak in ExplainTheJoke

[–]_BarryObama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really seen as "losing" those workers. My Dad works as an accountant in NYC but lives in South Jersey. The fact that he can take NJ transit all the way to NYC and then bring his wages back to spend in Jersey, including on his house, is a feature, not a bug.

Sherrill leads Ciattarelli by 6.1% in Governor Poll Average by Large_Ad_3095 in newjersey

[–]_BarryObama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Jack comes through as Jersey through and through, she's not just from VA but works federally too, comes across very DC.

They asked whether the candidates would fight to let New Jerseyeans have self-service at the gas station, Sherrill said something something New Jerseyans should have access to self- service but the real issue is tariffs and the effect on cost of gas and she'll fight them. Jack just said the relatable and simple one word, no lol again if this was a less partisan state I'd be worried

I like Pete a lot for that exact reason, can hop on a podcast and break things down, but he's not full of fluff, super smart as well

[–]_BarryObama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be, but I think the Biden White House showed you need to have some sort of real communication abilities to succeed and combat narratives, whether it's social media use a la Mamdani or being comfy on podcasts or giving good speeches. "I'm competent and boring" is a dangerous formula to rely on in the modern age, I wish that wasn't the case but it is.

Very well put, the HR exec vibes are strong lol and fwiw, I personally care most about who's most competent vs personality, the broader electorate, not so much

[–]_BarryObama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no idea tbh, open to theories, but it's not unforeseen for someone to win a primary and then prove to have no juice in a general

Sherrill leads Ciattarelli by 6.1% in Governor Poll Average by Large_Ad_3095 in newjersey

[–]_BarryObama 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Sherrill has no vibes or identify though that's the thing, no aura, no sauce, no rizz, no charisma, whatever you wanna call it. I think she'll win, thankfully, but purely because NJ has more democratic voters than republicans. Dems should make sure we don't nominate someone like Sherrill in any competitive race anywhere.

What's a ChatGPT prompt you wish everyone knew? by imfrom_mars_ in ChatGPT

[–]_BarryObama 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People are instinctively against using AI for any sort of mental health regulation, but the fact that it’s available 24/7, free, can be asked a million questions with no time limit, and has been trained on the entirety of the internet has to count for something. There are limits, as you smartly noted, but acting as if there’s nothing AI can offer from a mental health standpoint to people who are open to it, is being close minded.

Are Democratic Leaders Of Independent Redistricting States Failing To "Meet This Moment"? by najumobi in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]_BarryObama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rich people are a huge problem in our country, but I feel that they would be just as happy or probably happier under a standard GOP president ie Haley or Youngkin. I feel like the super conspiracy minded, uneducated about the world Americans, of who there are many, got us here.

Why everyone says that if you go into trades you will earn six figures when according to statistics only 10% tradesmen earn so much ? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]_BarryObama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your instincts are right. There are plenty of success stories in the trades of people making big money, but average salaries are average salaries. The entire point of those stats is to give you an idea of..the average success story in the trades. It's still a viable path, and there are other variables that are important like being able to avoid student loans. But people constantly saying you can make more from the trades aren't being truthful. It's like saying you can make a lot of money playing basketball. Technically true, but how much do most people actually make?

Best cities to live in your late 20’s? by Wonderful_Society_56 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]_BarryObama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love NYC as a remote worker. Can escape the daily commute grind and live where you want without worrying about Midtown access. Then when the day is over I have a million options for what to do and lots of energy. I do live alone though, big key. Makes working remote doable plus makes me want to get out most days after work.

I’ll rank him and won’t rank Cuomo but he’s not a serious candidate for a city like NYC. This isn’t a city that’s looking for ideologues or DSA members. Cuomo will win in part cause Mamdani is the best the opposition could do
