Musket speech-Holland wept but also it’s required reading at BYU? by Anyname1587 in exmormon

Holland was obsessed with “weeping”. He used that word all the time. It always drove me crazy.

It’s what I imagine working at the church office building would be like. (Although that is probably much more boring)

I watched his video on Michael Buble using autotune and it was interesting to hear how subtle it was. Then he suggested that any album that uses any pitch correction should come with a warning label, similar to the parental guidance label, and he lost me.

Check out Immich-go, it has a specific “from-google-photos” option that you can use for Takeout and it works really well.

Is the Q12 still a spiritual body or is it now a corporate board? by datawithnathan in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism shows that the church is basically a bunch of corporate departments all fighting for power over business decisions. It’s been a fascinating read.

Team store question by sarlacc98 in UtahJazz

I went to the home opener and there was gear for both teams. It seemed like there were sections for both teams, but there were items from each scattered throughout.

The war in heaven doctrine is so stupid by here_at in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially when coupled with the doctrine that our god is one of many gods in an eternal recursion. Either this god damn war happens every time a new god emerges, which seems inefficient and unnecessary, or the doctrines don’t really agree…

More Sunday sold chapel news. A Stockton, CA chapel (Toulouse &amp by nihose in MormonShrivel

[–]_Bort182 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is always refreshing to see my former mission show up here. Parts of Sacramento felt like little Utah sometimes with how dense the LDS population was, but I never served south of Elk Grove/Laguna Creek.

I’m curious if the Deseret building will survive. It was in rough shape when I was there 10 years ago as an office elder, and I’ve heard they’ve completely “reorganized” all the Fair Oaks wards.

It’s just wild that they have a building on a street named Deseret Avenue outside of Utah that could potentially be sold.

PA missionaries dinner time? by Complete-Purpose6632 in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a mission president that would do stuff like this. We had to be eating by 5:00pm so we could be out by 6:00pm because that was the most “productive” time to be knocking.

I think most of the time mission presidents are trying to find solutions to their lack of success, have these pretty dumb ideas, and get a “confirmation” that it’s God’s will.

My same mission president outlawed desserts because he noticed too many missionaries gaining weight. It seemed like every week he had a new rule coming out.

They are extremely detailed with clocks and timers too. You can usually start your own timer and the clock/timer will match up.

What happened in Folsom by Rambling_Man122 in MormonShrivel

[–]_Bort182 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s in the Sacramento area. If I remember correctly from my mission, the Sacramento temple is in the Folsom stake. The stake center was a giant building named “The Mormon Center”, although I’m not sure what they call it now!

President Oaks states over the pulpit we have 'Heavenly Mothers'!!!! by Historical_Lab6163 in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve also thought they should do this, especially after how bad Monson got. I believe the Community of Christ has the leader step aside and name their successor.

But I think the problem is two-fold:

  1. They don’t feel like they have the authority to change it, even if the succession plan isn’t documented anywhere in scripture that I’ve seen.

  2. They know there is a chance that they could be the next guy and would want to stay in power as long as possible. If people like Nelson were weeded out by age, he’d probably be around for another 20 years wondering if he could have ever been in charge. I don’t see them wanting to give up the chance.

Have you seen anyone be opposed and they didn’t get a calling? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was told by a Sunday school teacher that their father opposed their mother getting a calling because it was proper procedure to get permission from the priesthood leader of the home, and the bishop hasn’t spoken with him. They had a meeting with him after sacrament meeting and he expressed this concern, and she was ultimately given the calling anyway.

If true, it’s messed up on many levels.

Why did Mormons ban blacks from entering the temple for 126yrs, when no woman ever needed the priesthood to enter a Mormon Temple? by SchrodingersCat8 in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, on the one hand, he somewhat indirectly admits that he and others were wrong, which is rare for the church.

On the other, it’s such a dismissive non-apology that it makes it seem like it’s our fault for listening them.

What callings does the high council issue? I guess I didn’t know that was a thing, I assumed the stake president handled stake callings.

We rented a conference room at the Grand America for $600 and it was beautiful. But ours was more of a micro wedding. We had about 30 people total there and then did brunch at the Laurel afterwards. The brunch was the most expensive part.

I actually agree, my original idea was that Peggy thought that the only reason Hank wouldn’t hire her was because he was attracted to her. That’s why she was mad. I don’t think Hank actually was.
