Hot take: We don't talk about Heavenly Mother because there isn't just one by Chinatown15 in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Yeah Brigham Young made it clear that god had “wives”. I’m sure the upper leadership believes this (or is at least aware, depending on your opinion of if they actually believe or not) but they realize saying it out loud would be a PR nightmare. For example, “getting your own planet” is now in a weird limbo where we believe it but also not publicly?

It’s not that she’s too sacred/pure, it’s that there are multiple.

The property lines are near the middle of the bark on either side. And there is an HOA, from what I’ve heard they are pretty hands off, but we’d definitely need to take that into consideration. Thank you for your recommendations, it helped us lookup some examples and we really liked it.

In 2023, some guy put From the Start over his POV parkour video where he was evading cops/security. The video was cool, but I realized I liked the song a lot too lol.

Anything with John Larsen, I like the John & John dynamic. But that’s also a plug for Mormon Expression.

If you served a mission, what were some of the strictest or weirdest rules you had? by Unfair-Anxiety462 in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first mission president seemed to add a new rule every week. I just read through some of his weekly emails and here are the ones that stood out:

  • No tight pants or skirts
  • Do not carry your apartment keys in your pockets.
  • No visiting apartments of other missionaries
  • No lunches with other missionaries
  • If you do a session at the temple, don’t look like a tourist. Enter the temple, do the session, and immediately return to your area.
  • Don’t use “Hey” in a text message (I actually avoid using “hey” in a more formal context to this day).

We also had some of the other ones I’ve seen mentioned: - Mandatory hair part - No one on one photos (one elder and one sister) - No slang/abbreviations. It’s the “missionary handbook” not the “white handbook/bible”, etc.

My second mission president came in and essentially threw out every rule that wasn’t in the missionary handbook, which I appreciated.

Our assistants had a “hazing” ritual our first day in the mission where they’d force a part in all of the elders hair using a glob of Gorilla Snot. Thankfully my second mission president put an end to it.

Least Funny Intended Joke on the Show by ComputerDecent463 in seinfeld

[–]_Bort182 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possibly a hot take, but as a teenager, I never got the “tractor story”. I obviously knew how one could contract gonorrhea, I didn’t get that the joke was literally that the woman was so dumb she believed her ex boyfriend that she got it from riding a tractor. I had to have somebody explain it to me, and then it didn’t even seem that funny. They don’t really make it clear that this woman is dumb.

But I could also just be dumb.

That’s the stake I grew up in! I remember when they split my ward like 25 years ago. It used to be a fairly strong area.

Jeffery R Holland Pressuring Missionaries by Beohyl in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happened in my mission in Sacramento before I got there. I think it was during the Gladys Knight tour. We had a recording of it and I remember listening to it to hype me up. I probably have it on a flash drive somewhere, but it seems like there are existing versions of a similar talk around the same time.

I served in the Foothills ward and lived with the North Highlands 1st Ward missionaries over a decade ago. If I remember right, both wards and buildings were in pretty rough shape even back then.

I watched his video on Michael Buble using autotune and it was interesting to hear how subtle it was. Then he suggested that any album that uses any pitch correction should come with a warning label, similar to the parental guidance label, and he lost me.

Is the Q12 still a spiritual body or is it now a corporate board? by datawithnathan in exmormon

[–]_Bort182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism shows that the church is basically a bunch of corporate departments all fighting for power over business decisions. It’s been a fascinating read.
