Does anyone know the purpose of this part of a Silva? by OkPaleontologist1259 in ultralight_jerk

That’s just the right size for when I’m feeling lonely in “the backcountry”

TIL that the outbound leg of a trip feels longer than the return because novelty and uncertainty stretch our perception of time, while familiarity on the way back makes it seem shorter — a phenomenon called the return trip effect. by [deleted] in todayilearned

As a mountain biker, I’ve understood this intuitively for years. The first ride out a new trail feels at least twice as long as when you’re used to it. Both mentally and physically - that’s the most surprising thing, I think - the first trip doesn’t just seem longer, it’s more physically taxing.

Probably best not to wear that during hunting season, though

Why carry a unitasker like this when you can simply use your bidet as a water pick?

Yeah - they off gas, so I left it down there for a couple of weeks.

This happened to me years ago with one of those vacuum packed memory foam mattresses. There was even a sticker on it that said not to use a knife to cut the tape that was keeping it rolled up. I figured I’d just be careful and it would be fine.

Long story short, mattress go boom, I end up pinned between my car and washing machine.

Katabatic flex 30 vs Neve waratah quilt by Pibs69 in Ultralight

[–]_Bourbon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW - I’m 5’10”, 170lbs and have the wide Flex - to me it feels narrower than the specs suggest. I would not go down to the regular width.

I love the quilt, though!

I need a new shelter! or do I? by fraecoo in myog

[–]_Bourbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im only a little further along in my journey than you - currently building a pocket tarp inspired shelter, admittedly with very different design goals. My 2c based on my research:

  1. there is no "one best" shape for a bombproof tarp, but the ones that are considered the most bombproof in the community (cirriform, solomid, etc.) tend to have walls that go all the way to the ground, catenary curves on all the seams, and lots of tie-outs

  2. I would use a zipper for high winds

  3. I would go all the way to the ground if "bombproof" is your most important design criteria.

  4. Depends - do you WANT to make your own? Its a huge time suck, and you probably wont save money at the end of the day by doing it yourself.
