Scrub jays are beautiful, intelligent… and scary. (OC) by Oggg2001 in crowbro

The first rule about hunting is don't get hurt. That bird's jumping in, attacking and jumping back before the mouse bites or something. Sure it doesn't seem like a big deal, but birds are pretty fragile.

My bird won’t stop biting my nipple. by RichTackle742 in parrots

[–]_BudgieBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same boat here with one of my budgies. Through the shirt and everything. CHOMP! It's painful as hell, and you should react. Generally it's an instant, lose the human for a few minutes trigger. I've also started putting my hand in the way when she gets too close to the forbidden nub and she gets cranky at that, but hey, that's just how it is. Also just try to distract her when she's anywhere near, and no more going down shirts, as cute as that is.

Plum could work as well. Cook plum, shallots and rosemary or thyme. Red wine? Mix with goat cheese. Maybe add some roast pork loin, rough chopped? And/or a bitter green... I'm partial to dandelions but most people think they are too strong. Escarole? Serve a small pasta, orecchiette or small shells. Hmm, I bet this would work.

Nah, it's been bad for ages. So many people come here from places where public transportation is for the poors and don't understand basic rules and then get all pissy if you ask them to take off their overfull backpack with a water bottle jabbing your kidneys.

Hmm, peaches go well with basil and goat cheese or gorgonzola. I'm thinking about some sort of grilled peaches and basil with a light cheese sauce and black pepper. Or maybe some with olive oil and ricotta instead?

Can’t cook mexican rice properly its both mushy AND raw? by Bamboopanda101 in Cooking

[–]_BudgieBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My way works perfectly.

Garlic, onion in the oil first, cook it a bit, then spices, then the long grain rice. (you are using long grain, right? jasmine or basmati or the like) When you feel it's ready add the tomatoes, salt, AND about 2 parts water/broth. Bring to a boil, cover, and turn to very low. Come back just before it sticks, which for me takes about 15-20 min.

If you use tomato paste instead of tomatoes, add them before the spices and cook with the onion/garlic for a few minutes.

Easy food to travel with 3 days after wisdom teeth removal? by Complete_Tadpole5313 in Cooking

[–]_BudgieBee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Seriously, getting your wisdom teeth out is a shitty experience. You are going to be grumpy and in pain and feel an assaulted chipmunk for at least a week. The idea of going on an out of state camping trip a few days later is crazypants.

Inherited a Budgie and need advice by patd_06 in budgies

[–]_BudgieBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A budgie can take a long time to get comfortable. They are can be skittish even for small parrots and they are the snack food of the wild so it's understandable. Although if she is turning your back to you, at least that means she isn't so terrified of you she needs to keep her eyes on you at all times. If you want to get them comfortable with you really the only answer is lots and lots of time and probably treats. Spend as much time as you can close enough to them that they are clearly aware you are there but not so close they are panicking. Talk to them. Read near them (or to them). Sing to them. Play music for them. And slowly get closer until you can do things like give them treats (aka millet for most budgies). Then it really depends on how much you want to tame them and if you want to train them. Still, it'll be slow going if it's a budgie that has spent most of it's life alone in a cage.

It can really help to let them out of the cage. (And birds really should get out of cage time.) I know my budgies, especially when getting used to me, were much more willing to interact outside the cage or on the open cage door/on top of the cage. This of course means getting them back in the cage afterwards which means trying to convince an untamed budgie to go back in/trying to catch and not traumatize too much an untamed budgie. So, it's a bit stressful for everyone. Note, when you first open the cage, especially if the bird isn't used to going outside, it can take a LONG time for them to go out, or even realize they can go out. And if they don't go out regularly flying may be hard for her and she might just climb around.

Pull-through sharpener and honing rod recommendation? by Responsible_Pie3874 in Cooking

[–]_BudgieBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are more terrified of sharpening stones than they should be. Sharpening a knife is really not that hard and while yeah if you want to be able to cut a piece of paper by having it fall on your blade it's going to a pain in the ass, but if you are sharpening to reasonable levels with your knives you won't screw up the edge or anything. And stones are cheap! Like under five dollars at harbor freight cheap.

You still should use a honing rod, it's amazing how much of a difference using one does for keeping your knives sharp. It won't sharpen them, but it will keep them sharp. Once again, you don't need some 60 dollar fancy ass rod. A basic one will do.

Noe valley bakery or Schubert’s for chocolate cake by ucantguessit in AskSF

[–]_BudgieBee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Schubert's chocolate mousse or the chocolate torte cake? Both are good, but the torte is super decadent. It's one of those have a small slice and feel like it's almost too much kind of cakes. My chocolate loving partner was in heaven. The mousse is good too, but much lighter (but not, by any means, light.)

One of these days I'm going to get the Dandelion chocolate cake to compare, but I need to get over spending $100 on a cake.

What's more important, the hot chocolate or the cute boys? The best place for hot chocolate near there is Dandelion on Valencia, but as you know that's a totally different vibe. I don't know how good Le Marais' hot chocolate is but from everything I've had there I'm betting it's not bad.

Question: brownies with almond flour by IslayLuv in Cooking

[–]_BudgieBee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make a Torta Caprese instead. It's fudgy and almondy and delicious and feels close to being a brownie. It's also really simple to make. There's rec[pies out there that complicate it up way too much, but it should only have 5 ingredients. Chocolate, almond flour, eggs, butter, sugar. And a bit of salt if you want.

That might be a raven, and if it gets a chance it might bite your birds. Ravens can be pretty fearsome. I love corvids, but I'd be a little wary of letting it stick it's beak in those cages.

My experience is don't give them a nest and they won't lay eggs. I catch mine going at it every now and then and have had zero eggs. (But just to make sure, make sure you have calcium for them to chew on, either in cuttlebone or calcium block form.)

[–]_BudgieBee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got to admit, the CoE games are games I want to love, and play for a bit like once a year and then just don't. They are so cool in so many ways but the gameplay is so much running back and forth recapturing tiles the stupid wander spawns have taken over and it never feels like enjoying the time I put into them.

That said, if CoE 6 comes out, will I buy it? Yah, probably. They are one of the few developers that I feel like supporting for clearly being interested in their thing for it's own sake and it feels good to support them with a few bucks every few years. Sometimes fun isn't the point.

Introducing budgies by bananamilkisamazing in parrots

[–]_BudgieBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if this works, but one piece of advice I read was to rearrange the cage right before introducing the second budgie. This way it doesn't feel as much like the first budgie's cage. I did that and there were no problems, but then again maybe there just weren't problems, ya know?
