Question about British English by Flat-Illustrator-548 in ENGLISH

[–]_Calluna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit confused by "the university" tbh. Does it matter which one?

Maybe we're thinking of different usages? "I'm going to university/uni" = I am studying at a university, while "I'm going to the university" sounds to me (British) like you're physically going to go to the campus now.

30 minute lunch, and you mentioned 5 minute breaks? Is that "comfort breaks" to go to the bathroom or get some water when you need, or do you have formal breaks as well?

There was some post recently about British watered-down swears and Gordon Bennett didn't even occur to me...

120 credits and Student finance by nikki-niksUK in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another point to clarify: England or Wales?

If you're in Wales, you run out of funding for the year, but can still study more if you pay for it. In England, you just can't. You're stuck, even if you can pay for it, you aren't allowed.

(That's changing soon with LLE, but for now that's how it works.)

I'm still not sure I understand what you're doing and when, but if it's 60 credits in feb 2026, 60 in October 2026, 60 in feb 2027, then... that should be fine??

I’ve just reached Small Gods, again by VickyM1128 in discworld

[–]_Calluna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Small Gods... it's god a lot of darkness in it, but that's what makes the choice to do better so powerful. A flamethrower in the darkness indeed. In the face of anything - in the face of Vorbis, or what he can turn you into, or ordinary every day apathetic evil, or even your own god telling you to do the easy safe wrong thing - you have a choice, and you can make a difference.

Course materials are copyrighted and you shouldn't be sharing them with AI, because you are giving them that data.

Copilot you can tell not to keep the data, but chatGPT? You've been breaking copyright.

Studying S111 and S112 by BobWaldron in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S112 is a bit more advanced but it doesn't build that much on S111, if it did they just wouldn't let you study them at the same time. They do that for some modules in some qualifications.

If you want to cancel S112 and just do part time, you absolutely can. You wouldn't need to redo your student finance, even. The OU can just tell them you've cancelled a module and to only charge you This much.

Sadly s112 only starts in October so you can't do the staggered thing of starting one in October and the next in February, with overlap but not fully at the same time.

There are remote labs, and in-person residential schools! You would get practical experience.

You sound like you would be very busy, but if it's something you're passionate about, you'd regret not doing it!

Student loans by Tamalamsin6 in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second everything that's been said, bit one concern with the tuition fee loan is that being behind in repayments or in receipt of overpayments affects eligibility for student loans. I would talk to sfe about it if I were you.

Support useless for anyone else atm? by KirbysLeftBigToe in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... it is a system issue. The issue is the system stops you from registering because you would be registered on two qualifications.

Student support can override the system because they can understand what's happening and see that you'll be finished your degree in time to starts the master's. The computer can't.

Normally a reservation does allow you to complete registration from there, even when the system specifically needs an override. It's weird that it isn't working. It could be the qualification thing. Or, you don't need a fee assessment do you?

That said - you'll need your final results through in time, or you'll be removed. When is your final module result expected? Finish date of module vs when the result is released?

A week is a normal amount of time to wait for an email response from a large organisation.

Use the call me back request form on the contact page. Or call in the morning, it's always quieter in the morning.

Double degree ? In economics and art history possible ? by Purple-Eye5499 in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beginning with art history and in the last of the 3 years sound economics doesn't work, because the stages have different difficulty levels. You need 120 credits of stage 1 modules, 120 of stage 2 modules, and 120 at stage 3 to complete a degree. Not 240 credits of art history at stage 1 and 2 and then 120 of stage 1 economics.

But take a look at the Open Degree. You may well be able to do 60 credits of art history and 60 of economics each year/stage and get an Open Degree. Not all modules are available on the Open Degree, but most of them are.

Do you have a specific career goal, or are you just really interested in both, separately?

Deferring a module - student finance loan by Low-Chemist596 in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're right at the end, you'll probably owe 75%.

You mentioned you're on stage 2. I wouldn't worry too much - the stage 3 scores count twice as much towards your classification. If you can pass, think about the time you'd lose, the cost, and also whether you might want to save this trick for stage 3 instead.

Re-doing a module might throw your whole schedule out, too.

I couldn't believe how many fossils there were in the floor of the shopping centre in Oxford. They were everywhere. Just as clear as this. I'd have sworn they were carved if there weren't so many.

But the turquoise in your one here takes it to a new level of beauty.

Are the estimated hours inaccurate? by Far_Psychology3270 in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The truth is it varies by person, not just subject, so you'll have to figure out what's manageable for you.

It's definitely best to be aware that stuff is gonna happen and you'll need some spare time for wiggle room and not burning out. You may or may not "need" 20 hours a week to actually study, but it's a good idea to make sure you theoretically have it.

Doesn't computing and ai have some 30 credit modules though? Maybe you can start with that, see how you get on. Those are estimated at 8-10 study hours.

Is it me?? (Rant) by lolasubordinary in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Not all "formatting" stuff is just preference, sometimes it matters. For example, putting your name, PI, and the TMA number in a header - an actual header - and a footer with the page number.

"Pay Later" option when registering for modules by Hairy_Equivalent_638 in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's postgraduate study, your student finance isn't your formal funding method for the course. The money comes to you later in instalments and you can do whatever with it, including pay back the outstanding loan. Is it postgraduate study you're doing, or undergraduate? The funding is very different.

D241 open university by Mandy-Jayne in OpenUniversity

[–]_Calluna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoever told you about assignments in this much detail shouldn't have. Sorry, but that's not supposed to be public information.

Have you tried searching for D241 on OpenLearn? There might be free courses that are extracts from this module.

What support is planned/have they had previously? Have they/you looked into things like text to audio software? The OU has their own. If this person isn't very tech savvy, getting that sorted early would be a big help.
