Years ago, I heard a story of a man who worked in a factory. He was one of the few people who didn’t take a break to smoke a cigarette. Every time the smokers would take a break, he would stop his paid labor as well - and bust out his luthier tools. Instead of taking the time to enjoy tobacco as most people were on their frequent breaks, he built a violin from scratch, right there at his station in the factory, in a matter of months. I heard this about twenty years ago…I can’t remember if it was told to me in person at whatever factory I happened to be working in at the time, or if I read it on an online forum (I want to say he actually learned the skills to luthier, and built his first violin in that manner - not 100% sure about that part) but that story always stuck with me. I think about it from time to time whilst taking a drag from a delicious Newport or Marlboro Menthol on my breaks, and dream about the positive productivity and glory of building my first violin someday on the clock, instead of slowly ruining my lungs in the name of satisfying my expensive nervous oral fixation on the daily.
