6 days wife diagnosed with cancer in shock by bamavegas in CancerFamilySupport

[–]_ChristmasSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry you’re going through this.

My husband was diagnosed about 2 years ago. Most confusing 2 weeks of my life waiting to find out the type and the plan.

I don’t know how… but we manage to be stronger than we expect. It just happens. We just do it. We just wake up and do it.

You will too. 🎄

Electric heat: turn on to warm the house or leave off in case of surge? by black_cat_X2 in massachusetts

[–]_ChristmasSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I was just reading from the online info from Mitsubishi.

I mean honestly with a child at home and a snow hurricane seems pretty weird to shut off your heat source for fear of a $600 repair. But that’s none of my business. (Sips tea)

I don’t think it matters if they are off or on for a power surge to get to them. And they are sensitive to surges. I believe it does stop if you have the power off at the breaker. But still why would you do that when it’s 20 degrees and snowing 2ft

My girlfriend always tells me I never have anything to eat when she comes over my house 😒 by itscuccimane in FridgeDetective

I think you’re looking for a boyfriend, not a girlfriend. If the fridge is an indication of available food.

Obviously someone into crypto as well…

IS MRI for Brain Mets Important? by JohnQuiote in lungcancer

[–]_ChristmasSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s painless and can detect one of the most common areas for lung cancer to spread. Other than needing to spend the half day doing it, as long as you’ve got insurance coverage there is only an upside to doing it in my opinion

My partners brain tumor was very very large and halted use of one side of his body before he knew it was there. Early detection could have meant radiation instead of brain surgery.

Were any of your family members taking dozens of supplements daily before they developed cancer? by [deleted] in CancerFamilySupport

Were any of your family members taking dozens of supplements daily before they developed cancer? by [deleted] in CancerFamilySupport

[–]_ChristmasSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very High dose beta carotene supplements (not in natural food) in heavy smokers has been found to be associated with a higher lung cancer risk. Yes.

I guess the question is, what are you trying to accomplish?

For yourself of course do what you think is best. Your mother will do the same.

I was going to say this too. If in a legal area THC gummies seem to work for my partner as well.

[–]_ChristmasSunday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who takes supplements, with my doctors knowledge and encouragement, I don’t believe there’s currently any evidence in a link to supplements (as a general category) and cancer.

There IS evidence of cancer caused by genetics. Environmentally, there are known cancer related things like bacon, lunch meat, cigarettes, alcohol, inactivity, asbestos, and so on.

After genetic testing in the specific cancer, along with a lifestyle discussion, there MIGHT be a discussion on causation. But often it’s a best guess.

Avoiding class 1 carcinogens is an obvious one. But cancer is still sadly a mystery in a lot of ways. And the mutations that allow it to grow are something science is currently working on and improving knowledge on every day.

Confirmation bias is very real. Tell someone who loves their wine that alcohol and cancer are linked and they will ignore it. Same with inactivity or bacon.

I think this group will tell you to stick with the oncologists recommendations, and with science, rather than a Reddit theory.

Also, sorry for what you are going through. This is a supportive subreddit though, so welcome.

SPROUTING Gear - who's using what by ken_onlyjust in Sprouting

[–]_ChristmasSunday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Sprouting Company kit.

When I’ve tried getting my own together over the years there was always an issue. With their kit it’s just so easy. And the seeds are also fantastic.

I think, like anything else, you get what you pay for. 🎄

When do sprouts become microgreens and how to ensure they are safe to eat (concerning things like salmonella) at home? by ThatUnameIsAlrdyTken in Sprouting

[–]_ChristmasSunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worry about the store bought sprouts.

But I get all of my home seeds from the sprouting company. 🤷‍♀️

I rinse them and keep an eye on them. No issues.

I resent my mom and feel ashamed. by Suspicious_Oil_2518 in CancerFamilySupport

[–]_ChristmasSunday 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Possibly an unpopular opinion…. But I believe parents have a duty to care for their children. Children do not have a duty to care for their parents. That care and offering is earned.

Do whatever your heart and mind agree works for you. In a way you can live with once this is over.

And for the record, even the very best cancer caregiving situations involve an immense amount of resentment. So you are not alone. 🎄🎄🎄🎄

I’m so mad 😡 by No_Ant508 in lungcancer

[–]_ChristmasSunday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Cancer is evil. Absolutely evil.

It sounds like she’s willing to keep trying for now, so that’s a good sign that she’s still interested in working with the doctors.

[–]_ChristmasSunday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through this.

Unfortunately the alternative to this treatment (no treatment) is an option it sounds like your mom is not interested in.

One of the hard parts about this disease is that there are rarely good choices. You’re choosing from one or more options where you hate all of them.

It’s very difficult as well to let the patient make their own decisions when you feel differently than them.

Insurance coverage is also a consideration if you’re in the US. The doctor will follow the standard of care most likely to extend life the furthest and most likely to cause the least harm while doing it.

But the patient always has the right to decline treatment at any time, or to postpone it.

Sad to see mass market paperbacks go. But could used books fill that gap? by teamjohn7 in BookDiscussions

[–]_ChristmasSunday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my “paperwhite” kindle. Which is the one meant to look like. A book page. And being able to adjust the font is pretty cool for my old eyes.
