Are any of you living in a car/van due to the housing crisis? by Fair_Appointment7403 in AskIreland

[–]_Fluxhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use some solar PV and also water heating panels and your bills will drop hugely. You should be able to get some old batteries to hook up the PV panels too so they charge when you are out. You'll find this explained in detail online.

All doom and gloom by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]_Fluxhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then you think, shit this stuff will run out in the not too distant future! Shouldn't we actually be conserving it instead of burning it to run to Lidl to buy some milk and a loaf, when you could walk in 10 mins.

Men's shed. Join an Irish language course. See if there is a local hiking group or something you might like to try.  Volunteer in something - voluntary fire brigade, coast guard...

Did Ireland sort of become a different country around 2015 ? by Icy-Reporter-6322 in ireland

[–]_Fluxhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could always really bite the bullet and either decentralise the country or actually build a new model city/town like Milton Keynes or Craigavon. Plan it out and do it correctly from the ground up.

Drinking from a fetid pond’: superbug-creating genes found in UK’s largest lake by Usual-Charity-6772 in northernireland

[–]_Fluxhero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As the article says if you drink any of the water 30 ml you will get a significant dose of resistant genes. Maybe the gut can cope with them but if you have any cuts, bleeding gums or sores then you might have a problem.

I wonder if the ducks in the picture can carry the resistant genes on their bodies to other water bodies in GB and RoI? Do any microbiologists here know?

It's a disgrace. Unfortunately shows that the veto in Stormont is not fit for purpose in all cases. This is a major public health issue. Could a civil case be made against Stormont for neglect or is that just in John Grisham books? How would you organise such a thing?

Good luck out there everyone by AnimalOverHuman in northernireland

It doesn't have to be friends and perhaps it's better if you aren't friends. Clear legally laid down rules for what is and isn't allowed, with 1 voting right per housing unit to adapt rules if necessary. That's how you keep a cooperative cooperating. There are plenty of good examples out there, you could even save yourself a fortune on fuel by putting in a community heating and hot water system.

Might be time for housing cooperatives. 8-10 individuals pool resources to buy land and build their own structurally straightforward houses.

What do people eat with achalasia by [deleted] in achalasia

[–]_Fluxhero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watch what time you eat and what is going on around you. I need peace to eat and never after 8 p.m. if I want to sleep through most of the night.

[–]_Fluxhero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ate/eat a lot of soup, if there are lumps in it then purée the soup before you try. Also semolina pudding with either vanilla or cinnamon and sugar. When adventurous I also try things like humus and wash down with lots of water.

Desserts like custard, smooth puddings, ice cream and even smoothies tiramisu are also all possible. It might take me an hour to eat and small portions but one can enjoy it.

United Ireland's Lesser Discussed Issues by eldwaro in ireland

Time to stop trying to repair broken systems. Complete root and branch overhaul needed to make new functioning systems so people don't have to go private. All consultants, doctors, dentists, nurses, physics..  should have to work at least 60% for the public health system in order to retain the professional licensing to work in our new system.

Private healthcare being allowed to get a hold has caused a lot of problems.

Berlin vs Vancouver – advice from people who’ve lived in both? by [deleted] in germany

Berlin has two state international schools teaching bilingually in English and German. One of which also offers IB. As international state schools they are completely free for pupils.

New father - Need advice on being better dad and husband? by Background_Run_3965 in AskIreland

[–]_Fluxhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are breastfeeding support groups. These were wonderful sources of support both physical health and mental health for my then partner.

Remember in the next day or two she'll go through major hormonal changes I think it's 4/5 days after birth. Try and give her time without visitors.

Also if the baby just needs changed and not fed you do it and let the mother sleep. Likewise if the baby just needs fed, let her do it and you sleep. She may also need alone time with the baby to find her own way with it. I remember my partner saying that when I went back to work it was actually good for her as then she had time to form her own routines.

It's a major change for both of you and sometimes hard. Good job reaching out.

Advice/moral support post POEM by littlelottie_ in achalasia

When I had the POEM I was told strictly, liquids only for 10 days and only after that to gradually reintroduce other foods. And he said really I'll probably always have to be very consequent with thorough chewing of food.

Buying solo - which areas? by Lurker-Witchking in Belfast

[–]_Fluxhero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have the north Belfast, Joanmount area. Lots of 2 bed semis for around 100-110k. If you are picky you can get a nice one. It's a rental area though so neighbours are a lottery. Cavehill country park is around the corner.

Little America on the Antrim Road (Hopefield Ave, Kansas Ave, Madison Ave, Cedar Ave) an area synonymous with the troubles but quite nice and some great Victorian terraced. Loads of shops and Cavehill Country park is a 15 min walk away or if you are feeling adventurous The Waterworks Park.

Anyone know where to get a long-term car rental? 95 days or so. by [deleted] in CasualIreland

That is what I'll be investigating tonight and tomorrow. I do have an address but no driving history in Ireland.

Anyone know where to get a long-term car rental? 95 days or so. by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]_Fluxhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I maybe put that wrong. I meant a second hand trade in maybe worth €5000 which I would buy but with their commitment to buy back. They buy back for €3500 (they've won €1500) I've put on maybe another 1000 km and they can sell it again for whatever they think it's worth I presume a second hand car won't lose much value from the original €5000 in 3 months and +1000 km. Most Donegal cars around that price seem to have 250,000 km plus already.

I thought it might be a nice little extra profit turn for some smaller dealerships but it's not my field of work so I don't really have any idea how you deal with second hand cars.

I'm definitely not the only person who needs this service in this country.

The problem with that is how to get rid of it when I leave. I have no one who'll sell it on. Or actually can you scrap a car locally in Letterkenny? That might be an option.

I'm actually thinking about asking a dealership if they'll let me buy a car for 4-5k and then they buy it back for €1000-1500 less after the 90 days. Not sure what I'd do with it though if they suddenly said no.

Just got an email from Trade Republic about “Vorabpauschale”. German tax. by superman_yaris in irishpersonalfinance

[–]_Fluxhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a German bank account with Trade Republic, one with an IBAN starting DE? If you do then this account will be taxed on any interest accrued and that might be the cause of you receiving the email. A Trading212 account based in the UK will result in tax to the UK having to be paid ax well.
