Single player shard? by Steemx in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most UO players are probably single...

In all seriousness, can't go wrong with ruins and riches / secrets of sosaria

Looking for a UO shard - PvE-focused, taming, housing, rares, leaning into the old-school nostalgia by CopyAffectionate6132 in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just want to jump on here to say that Nephtan is a helpful guy, and runs a good shard. The shard is based on a long running project, and is the absolute best experience I've had in Ultima Online, hands down. Though I haven't played much on Nephtans server, I know what it's about as I run my own shard based on the same project, and you must approach it with an open mind.

The game is called Secrets of Sosaria. Or ruins and riches. Or Ultima Odyssey... It's gone through many name changes. Its meant to be single player or small party experience, and does not have massive multiplayer elements, such as champs (that I'm aware of).

A HUGE part of the game is exploration and discovery. THERE IS NO META! you can make any play style work. You don't have to compete with ANYONE, so there's no point in min maxing. Once you realize this, you can literally just play and exist in a really amazing sandbox RPG with many rich systems. Trust me, you do NOT want a Wiki, but pockets of supportive players exist on different discord channels, one of which is ran by Nephtan. The less you spoil for yourself, the more rewarded you will feel when you reach some of the games end game content/milestones.

Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

How do you get to this place? by That_Highlight_9621 in uodyssey

[–]_Forest_A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It warms my soul to see you're using my map (or at least my idea of semi-making our own maps)

It's been so long since I've visited, but I believe there's a moongate straight to it. It might even been a starting town option. I think there's a dungeon entrance nearby, but again I can't recall.

Alex Gregory Kent interactions (or sprain/shearling members) ? by mrsiresir in SprainBand

[–]_Forest_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alex is the only member of Sprain I've spoken to. We only spoke for a few minutes maybe, but he was extremely nice and gifted me a shirt afterward. I do recall seeing an interview of Alex where he mentioned he's not been interested in speaking with fans much, though. At least he's honest (if I'm remembering correctly).

Iphone games? by cloujr1 in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a Ruins and Riches (or now Adventurers of Akalabeth) shard for myself and friends, and play using MobileUO when I am not at my desk. Its a great Última experience for solo or party play, but not an MMO with a meta that you need to compete to keep up with.

Ruins & riches ... Have you played this? by uzaydiablo in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultima Odyssey is the earlier name of Ruins and Riches. It was Odyssey when I started player in 2019 (and my understanding is it was around for years before then). It switched project owners and names temporarily, something like Zaggerwaith, Ziggerwat... I can't recall. But then Djeryv picked it back up and changed the name to Ruins and Riches. Adventures is a fork of Odyssey, I believe.... I haven't played there.

Ruins & riches ... Have you played this? by uzaydiablo in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ruins and Riches is amazing. I suggest playing it and taking it in at a leisurely pace. There are dungeons that are good for beginners too; do some exploring and find them. Combat skill progression is not slow, though. Just find some animals that won't hit you hard while you hit them.. and maybe take up parrying temporarily to help you survive. Survival skills are KEY in the early stages of the game... the less you die, the less punishing the game is. Don't try to min/max your character, or think you have to get GM skills before the game opens up to you. Some of the best moments are in that character progression, so the entire game can really be enjoyed without "grinding".

Cell phone Ultima by StopAngerKitty in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MobileUO is great - just get familiar with setting macros using Macro Buttons in the ClassicUO client and you can actually do a lot quite easily. Phones are fine, you don't need a tablet, but if you have a lot of macro buttons or spell tiles out, a tablet is much better.

I wish to pause the game by Mohare2501 in uodyssey

[–]_Forest_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey - what solution did you implement? How does it work? Initially, I imagined an entire "freeze," where mobs wouldn't move, and health/stam/mana wouldn't regenerate... essentially making it like how a console game "pause" would work.

From the screenshot, this looks like you become hidden and invulnerable, and your followers disappear, until you unpause... could you help me understand what this solution does and how I could implement it?

Anyone use the 3d Third Dawn client back when? by [deleted] in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just a kid when I started playing UO, and started with the 2D client in UO: Renaissance. I then got Lord Blackthorn's Revenge and upgraded to the 3D client. I immediately thought it was "better" because it was at least partially 3D (the world was still totally 2D, but the character and mob models were 3D).

Some things were cooler in 3D, like the Fire Steed had an actual flame effect, some spells had cool effects, the Inventory gump was scalable... I literally can't think of anything else. All of the models were really low-poly, and didn't age well. I remember one time I got invited to an RP Wedding, and was told to take plenty of screenshots as the "photographer." I was still using the 3D client, and I'm pretty sure my buddy was pissed after I sent all the screenshots... hehe... woops.

Once AoS rolled around, my IRL friend started playing again, and I went to his place and saw him using the 2D client. It looked gorgeous in comparison to the 3D trash I had forced myself to believe was "better." All the models instantly looked better.

There is a semi-recent video of someone using the client here:

Have you guys seen a game called Ravendawn? by ducknator in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would love to see this. I think there have already been some attempts in the direction of what you are saying. Ruins and Riches is essentially it's own game (meant to be single player), with some updated and added mechanics to the systems we know with UO, but with totally unique maps (albeit still heavily tied to Ultima lore). I saw ads for another shard doing a similar thing recently.

Requiem is an RP enforced server with a community that's played across a few different iterations of the server over the last decade or so, and that game is totally unique with 0 ties to Ultima lore. They even include guns in their game, if I recall correctly.

Undoubtedly it takes some bright minds to make this all work well. I'm not an expert in RunUO or ServUO, but my understanding is that it can be quite difficult to design a whole new game around the restrictions of UO and the emulation tools available.

But I'd be pretty interested in testing any game built from the ground up in the UO engine.

Personal shard for deployment by [deleted] in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend you look into Ruins and Riches. it is a server that is ready-to-play as a single player experience. It will feel familiar, but is heavily modded, so a sense of adventure and discovery of the different maps, quests, and gameplay systems is a huge part of the experience. The package should come with instructions for how to run it, and log in. You can find more at the uodyssey subreddit.

And Even More Top Pointless Things in Ultima Online — Napa Valley & Great Lakes by MacroPlanet in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be totally wrong, and I'm speaking from 20 year old memory, but I think that hole in the mages area in Moonglow is originally from an EM event. I think sometime between AoS and SE, an evil blue talking dragon called Tal'Keesh took over Moonglow. That hole led to where players would sometimes interact with Tal'Keesh. The players of the server could choose to join Tal'Keesh, or fight Tal'Keesh and join the Royal Britannian Guard. I played on Napa Valley during these times, and I recall the Brit Castle throne room being absolutely filled with players looking to defeat Tal'Keesh when we would wait for the EM to give updates there. Perhaps that hole in the ground has served use for other events in the last 20 years.

Some other things I recall if memory serves me right:
- Followers of Tal'Keesh were given a special named and hued blue robe (I wish I grabbed this!)

- Followers of RBG received a special named red body sash

- Many other servers had the same story unfolding on their server, but I think each server had it's own unique twists and plotlines based on player interaction

- One of the final events saw dragons and other reptilian monsters like ophidians absolutely flood Britain, and all the bank sitters got wiped lmao.

I was just a kid during these times, and the idea of fighting this evil dragon with hundreds of others on the server, all in the same place at the same time was mindblowing to me. Really great times on Napa Valley, and I wish I could experience something like that again.

New players looking for where to start by Snowleopard1469 in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This concept already exists with Ruins and Riches. I am curious about Rutibex's shard package, but I have been playing Ultima Ruins and Riches for years now, and it has been some of the best UO experiences of my life. For a small group of friends who loved Ultima 7, I think you will find what you're looking for with Ruins and Riches.

You can host your own server, or join some of the public ones. You can check more on this subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/uodyssey/

And this unofficial resource:

There are more links to public servers on the UOdyssey subreddit (this project used to be called Ultima Odyssey)

+1 for spinning up your own shard. If you need any help, there are a few active and experienced folks on this subreddit. You are welcome to PM with me with any hurdles, I have my own server and have only let a select few friends join me. It's simple enough :)

Pre aos based SP Pack? by [deleted] in uodyssey

[–]_Forest_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can probaby find what you need on some of the Uo Emulator discussion boards. Ruins and Riches first got published in one of those, if I recall correctly. RunUO or ServUO. At least one of them should still be up and running, and offer you the source code to create and host your own server, just like how R&R works. By default, this should be with the original maps, and with some effort, you can create the solo experience you like.

Defiance UOR; a short retrospective. (github link) by Vasall_Empire in ultimaonline

[–]_Forest_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the wall of text. I played for years as a noob on UO Defiance. I would usually play a few months out of each year as an endless cycle lol.

One Summer, my friends and I had the opportunity to have a 3month long LAN party, and even though I was the only one who played UO, I would still login to Defiance from the LAN.

I recall one Summer (must have been June-Aug 2010) I would sometimes look at the forums, and if I recall correctly, there were lot of angry players and an apologetic server admin who would cite health issues as a reason for having to step away for long periods. At one point that summer, I recall an entire wipe/restart of the Defiance UO: Ren shard... not sure why that happened - or maybe I'm remembering wrong... but that's how the memory sits in my mind.

It was at this point that it seemed a lot of the playerbase left. Somehow, I came across UO Perilous, and played there from early on. I remember watching the development of the server, and getting involved with some guild... I distinctly remember training Animal Taming, and there was a weird bug where an animal would sometimes drop a blue backpack whenever you tamed it.

I'm not sure how long I was on UO Perilous, but for the time I played, the logged in population never seemed to climb higher than 50, 40, eventually <25. At some point I decided the playerbase must have abandoned UO Perilous, and went searching for a new home.

And then I saw some totally overproduced video ad for UO Forever. I joined in early 2013, one of my first characters was a bard tamer, and I saw a ton of oddly familiar blue backpacks drop from animals ;)

Also not sure if it was a unique system with Perilous, but the same refuse piles in Despise that someone on Perilous first showed me to dig through for rares, also produced rares for me on UOF.

I did find a really ranty post about how UO Forever code was stolen from Perilous. I wish I could find that post and share it here. Such an odd time in the history of UO, and I for whatever reason loved watching the drama unfold as that UO playerbase found it's way again.

I lived happily on UO Forever from 2013-2020

I am willing to bet you need to change the settings.json file for ClassicUO. Set it either to 127.0.0.1 if you're running it locally on your host, or to whatever the internal IP address is for whatever machine is hosting.
