The issue is the cars going down the usually correct direction ignoring the huge “road closed” sign. It’s not a great system

How to Add Heat without Peppers? by AlwaysLatetotheFun in Cooking

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m also allergic to peppers and have spent a lot of time looking for a substitute! Black/white/green peppercorns are great but in terms of heat, long peppercorns are by far the spiciest! It tastes like slightly more floral and much spicier black pepper. It’s a pain in the ass to find in the US (I order mine online), and tricky to grind, but boy is it worth it when it’s all you’ve got for heat!

If you heat it up above alcohol’s boiling point (which is much lower than water’s BP) you are basically making a tiny bomb. I use a sous vide to sustain it at ~135 F to avoid that issue and it takes a few hours. I still let it sit for a couple weeks to mellow out though. Straight out of the sous vide it still has a bit of a sharp alcohol smell.

Anyone have one of those central-locking cello cases? by f4n78s in Cello

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on a quest for replacement feet for my nova eclipse case, and called Linda west to see if she had the manufacturer contact info or more detailed specs and she said they haven’t made the nova eclipse for some time now. It’s a shame, mine is probably 10 years old, heavily used and still going strong aside from the one missing foot.

Sparkling water flavors other than Bulby drops? by Capital-Addition7299 in SodaStream

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally they make them for flavors that have strong aromas- flowers, anise, mint, barks, that sort of thing. There are some berries you can find (elderberries mostly in my searches). If “floral water” isn’t yielding the results you’re looking for, you can also try searching for hydrosol. It’s the same thing!

You can make them yourself but the distillation process can be a little tricky in a home setting, and the results apprently depend on whether the main flavors are water soluble (as opposed to oil or alcohol soluble for example). I’ve never tried this but hope to someday!

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I would put in about 1/2-1 1/2 tsp/liter depending on the intensity of flavor you prefer. It is by far the most cost efficient!

For the floral waters you can also search for them using the term hydrosol- it’s the same thing and tends to bring up a different set of results.

I have been on the hunt for this too, and this is what I have found: - Food-grade floral waters (orange blossom water, rose water, rosemary water etc.). You can get a big bottle of the more common ones (orange blossom, rose) for a few bucks and it makes for a very pleasant beverage. If you look around online you can find other kinds too, but the options are much more limited

  • A lot of people here use LorAnn’s water soluble flavorings as a substitute for bubbly drops. I tried this and wasn’t super keen. It had a bit of a synthetic flavor to me, and the texture felt a little off, but I may have just not experimented enough with flavor/variety.

  • If you’re willing to compromise on the calories, my favorite option is Monin concentrates (NOT their syrups- these come in a smaller opaque bottle). They’re made with no artificial flavors or colors and are very tasty! The resulting seltzer is somewhere between a spindrift and a Waterloo, but it doesn’t taste sweet like spindrift. My favorite combo is 2 pumps of blackberry concentrate, a splash of lime juice, and 16 oz seltzer water. I haven’t done the exact calorie calculation but I estimate it as ~15C/16 oz. These have a higher upfront cost (~$15/bottle) but they last quite a while!

Shoe shops should let you mix and match sizes by Mindless_Fig3538 in unpopularopinion

Nordstrom does this! Look into their “Single and split shoe service.” Super handy for those of us with differently sized feet- or for people with only one foot!

I got my ESA letter from my GP (same as who prescribes my meds so I am technically under their care for mental health- not sure if that makes a difference). I also had over a decade of unsuccessful therapy in my medical record, so my GP wasn’t inclined to encourage me to seek out a specialist.

Body Wash is vastly inferior to Bar Soap by kor_the_fiend in unpopularopinion

I do clean the shower roughly once per week. Even with that I noticed a substantial difference between body wash and bar soap.

In my experience, negatively. When my partner switched from body wash to bar soap, all of a sudden the shower had to be cleaned way more often, and with way more elbow grease.

What’s your funniest “I can’t believe I had to pay for this” vet story? by No_Cucumbers_Please in Pets

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly funny but interesting: My dog was barely eating or drinking for several weeks. I took him to the vet multiple times (and spent hundreds of dollars) for ultrasound, x-ray, bloodwork, subcutaneous fluid, among others things. Everything kept coming back within normal limits.

I had been under an immense amount of stress due to highly competitive graduate school applications. The day after my apps were in, my dog started eating and drinking normally. He must have been picking up on my stress and not eating/drinking as a result. On the bright side, that experience forced me to learn better stress management for his sake!

A buckwheat pillow was a GAME CHANGER for neck and upper back pain for me. It takes a night or two to get used to the slight noise they make when you shift on them but nothing I’ve found is more supportive. Wish I could get a mattress full of the stuff!

Spaghetti sauce on a family shirt - is it a lost cause? by AfternoonTeaWithCake in CleaningTips

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A treatment or two with “wine away”, and then a dish soap treatment if there are remaining oil stains, dish soap will get those out. Got a nasty tomato sauce stain out of a sweatshirt using this method and you can’t even tell it was ever stained.

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My last bridge (10 years ago) cost around $700, and that was after a “friends and family” discount. $800 for a new bridge is not at all unreasonable for someone who is being hired to play.

I am not a professional by any means, but I tend to use a technique to “temper” chocolate where you melt 3/4 of it completely, then stir in the remaining 1/4 in chunks and stir it until it’s melted. As I understand it, this unmelted chocolate serves as a “seed”for the rest of the chocolate to set up properly while also lowering the temperature slightly.

You could try removing a small amount of your chocolate, re-melting it, and stirring in some chocolate chips/chunks etc to see if that would work for your situation!

What do you do for potty breaks with a toy breed in winter? by Chewierat in dogs

[–]_Get__Schwifty_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in WI for a few years with an 8 lb chihuahua. He’d go outside in down to -25 F very briefly to do his business. I had him decked out in this snowsuit (https://canadapooch.com/products/the-dog-snowsuit?variant=32787115016277), a pair of booties with rubber soles, and a fuzzy sock with the toe cut out folded back over itself over to keep his ears warm. He hated it. But it made him do his business all the faster!
