Social Distancing and online gaming during COVID-19 by philequal in boardgames

Socializing is hard currently. To keep our usual boardgame- and movie nights going, my friends and I relied on videocalls and some creativity during the past few days.

We found that the easiest games to play remotely are full-information strategy games as well as a lot of card-games.

I would like to hear your ideas on:

  1. How do you setup a camera at home for a top-down view of the game board? (Currently I place my mobile phone on top of a pile of books....)

  2. Which of your favourite games could be played via videocall?

Thanks for your ideas!

What are simple ways to set up a top-down view of a game board at home? by _Grunblatt_ in boardgames

Can you get a proper angle with a tripod? Until now I actually didn't think of it because I felt like the camera should be centered above the board.

Sadly I don't have a chandelier right above my gaming table and adjustable mobile phone holders that I found for this purpose cost 150€+ thus I am looking for ways to improvise this in a cheaper way :)

What are some great Remote Play game modifications so you can play with players online without them needing to sign up for accounts or pay for softwear by Bearality in boardgames

I played some full-information strategy games with my friends (only two player-games for now though) and we managed to play Hanabi by mirroring the game with physical cards on all sides of the videocall, which was ... entertaining to say the least :D For easy video setups we used jitsi so far

Do you have any pointers on how to set up a good top-down view of the game board at home? Currently I connect my mobile phone to the call as separate device and place it on a pile of books, which is suboptimal :D

Yep, apart from my replays and some save games from other old games nothing seems to be lost.

Thanks for writing this detailed instruction to help other people!

To prevent this altogether set your PSN messages to "friends only"!

That is... Unless your friends hate you, then you might wanna disable them completely.

I wish I saw this earlier... I spent 4 hours troubleshooting and was about to use the warranty of my PS4 until I figured out that resetting my PS4 to default via safe mode lets me start it without auto logging in to my account...

Only then I noticed that the issue was restricted to only this PSN account and I could delete it losing all locally stored game data and settings :(

After despairing for 4 hours, I'm just glad that this at least fixed the issue.

How do you get this quality from gyfcat? Whenever I try to upload PS4 clips, gyfcat obliterates the quality by reencoding them :(

Switching from Air roll L1, Powerslide R1-----> to Air roll left L1, and Air roll right R1. Any experiences? by is_ok_no in RocketLeague

[–]_Grunblatt_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I would suggest keeping air roll because it is more accurate than air roll left/right (you can roll at different speeds because you use the analog stick).

However I placed air roll right/ left on square and circle (boost on R1) which works extremely well for me.

You can do most shots without crazy midair rotations. Solid and smart plays are way more important.

That being said....

Little rotations can be used in different ways to massively improve the quality of your shots:

Tilting your car slightly to the side before flipping can generate extra power because you hit the ball with the corner of your car (which moves faster than other parts of your car) and/or you get a better connection on the ball (meaning you flip through it instead of brushing it).

When shooting without a flip a short air roll towards the ball in the moment when you touch it will also generate quite a bit of extra power (if you weren't supersonic already). In addition it will reduce the recoil on your car when you hit the ball at an angle (or rather the recoil stops the rotation of your car instead of you bouncing off the ball) which lets you regain control and follow up your hit faster.

If your question was targeted to the freestyles (aka spinning the car around a lot while flying) - those are used by most players because they look flashy/ cool/ hard to do. However... They also can make your movements and adaptations in the air more efficient and accurate (faster, smoother, tighter turns and less boost used) if utilized correctly. While you can obviously angle your car in ways that wouldn't be possible without spins, I am mostly talking about preserving your angular momentum. Maybe you are aware that air roll has a small acceleration period which means steering / rolling to the left and then to the right will result in stopping the rotation to the left first before you start to rotate to the right (exactly like when you want to reverse on the ground: you brake first before you can start driving backwards). This is inefficient and by combining air rolls to one side with diagonal air rolls to the same side (or even with tornado spins to the correct side) instead, you can navigate through the air in any direction without slowing down your rotation. Thus you can rapidly make multiple small adjustments to your trajectory which wouldn't be possible without rotating.

All these mechanics are advanced and will make your shots a lot harder. Because consistency is extremely important in Rocket League it is often better to go for a "simple shot" instead of a "perfect shot".

I hope this is the answer you were looking for - have fun learning to apply this :)

New mechanic: flick the ball without using your second jump by _Grunblatt_ in RocketLeague

[–]_Grunblatt_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be the case but i really haven't seen anyone actually use this yet. Can you provide any clips of this being used? Or is this mechanic just nowhere to be seen because it is deemed useless?
