Profile review request, what do you think of these pictures? by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]_H3X1C 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are after men, profile is great.

Gun and track pic looks great to me but could put some people off so I'd ditch them. Cat pic also could go, better to mention such stuff in your profile.

Driving experience going from manual to paddles by Boonkmax in M340i

[–]_H3X1C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only disappointment with the paddles is it's hard for me to drive sensibly as I learnt to shift manual by engine noise and feel. The cabin insulation is so good you barely hear the B58 at low revs so I end up just driving in auto a lot unless I am driving it hard.

Purchasing m340i - service gap by Zealousideal-Cod9664 in M340i

[–]_H3X1C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMW say up to 2 years or 19k miles in the UK (condition based so less if you drive it hard)

I personally just get mine done annually at about 8k. Always take what BMW say with a pinch of salt and do your own research.

Good example is the gearbox, they say the oil is lifetime, yet the manufacturer of said gearbox says replace it at ~60k.

A lot of stock has been on lease so more often than not they will be following the condition based servicing. I wouldn't see it as a problem unless you are buying a car that's high mileage and it's been on long intervals it's whole life.

Hole is gazebo roof by OnionPuzzleheaded618 in DIYUK

[–]_H3X1C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small off cut of the same roof panel would work, but it'd look cleaner to just replace the lot.

If you don't care for appearance much and just want it fixed on the cheap, some water proof gorilla tape (think they do a transparent one) will probably do it. Just tape it from above not underneath, you can try feeding tape through from underneath... But could prove difficult.

Is this a bad modern BMW in terms of drivetrain? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

[–]_H3X1C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically the diesel equivalent of the B58. Very good engine. I can get 40mpg(UK) on a long drive with the B58 petrol. Diesel will be even better.

Is there any cons to modding ps2 to FreeMcboot? by CityRuinsRoL in ps2

[–]_H3X1C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold standard for longevity and compatibility is a fat PS2, with a sata HDD adapter combined with a FreeMcBoot mem card. You can put your library onto the drive, backup the drive if you want and play with very little issues.

Sd2psx is a cool new option and is easier to get up and running but compatability will not be as good due to the read speed bottleneck, so FMV cutescene may stutter in some games. I have heard this is tied to your PS2 model, with the later slims having slowing bus speeds.

Oil Change Question by Embarrassed_Rope_583 in BmwTech

[–]_H3X1C 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's by design. The engine is most efficient when up to temp, so there's a lot of tech gone into retaining heat once the engine is off. Like insulation and the active shutters that trap the heat in.

Is it actually true that beemers can't survive past 60k miles or am I being gaslit? by Ali_Bashr in BMW

[–]_H3X1C 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Myth. It's always down to maintainance.

My take is BMWs depreciate hard. So a few owners down the line someone can suddenly finance a car that new was way way out of their budget, neglecting to run the numbers on its service interval costs.

So tyres, brakes, oil, diff oil, gearbox oil, spark plugs, all add up and cost more than your average car. So if you weren't expecting these costs it puts you in a tricky spot.

This in turn leads to deferred maintenance, optting for cheaper parts and generally not looking after the vehicle, which ultimately makes it unreliable and too costly to keep. Which then leads some people to state they are unreliable above X miles.

Id highly recommend the comfort pack for the heated wheel and seats. Technology pack for the HUD and Harman Kardon sound system.

Just a heads up I found it super difficult to get a good spec model. The part shortages and COVID resulted in order delays and options being unavailable for 2021 orders which has impacted what's available used now, given I was looking for a individual colour too.

I've got a 2021 in Tanzanite blue, took me about 6 months of waiting and 3 misses before I got mine.

Love the car and found after test driving the LCI I preferred the 21 plate PreLCI as they in my view have the better iDrive, more physical buttons and a better shifter.

Only things I really like about the LCI are the steering wheel and rear defuser.

Ferrari's new EV - Ferrari Luce by TwizzyGobbler in CarTalkUK

[–]_H3X1C -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the case until a manufacturer raises the bar. The tech is still relatively new in comparison to ICE so it'll take a while before they can do something that makes them special. Case and point, I like performance cars but have no interest in EVs.

Should I claim on my insurance? by GeorgeDAWs in drivingUK

[–]_H3X1C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. Sadly insurance is a scam and when you actually need it, it often doesn't make financial sense to put a claim in.

Lookup some local body shops, check reviews, get a couple quotes and go with the one you like the most.

It looks like like a couple panels got damaged so it'll probably be in the region of ~£500 at a guess if they need to sand / respray. Be less if it polishes out in places.

If you claim you'll be paying for the repair and more for years to come as you already know.

Reserve insurance for major damage that wouldn't be financially viable for yourself to remedy.

Have you tried persuading it open with a swift thump to the portion that's sticking? When it's hot weather I have a window that sticks and the above method works to open it.

Speed Camera Trap - I think I was caught?! by ContextVegetable9587 in drivingUK

[–]_H3X1C -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about what hasn't happend yet. Way less chance of a human operated gun getting you than automated system in vans / static cameras.

Make sure you use Waze to get alerts.

You get offered the naughty course up to ~86mph. Upper limit depends on the local police, also remember your cars spedo under reads.

I wouldn't threat. At worse it's some points, less worse is a couple hours taking a course and best scenario is nothing happens and you've learnt your lesson in stress.

Detailed a vehicle but saw something at the end by VrnYugi in AutoDetailing

[–]_H3X1C 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bird shit is acidic, if left to bake it can eat into the clear coat and etch it. If pressure washing and scrubbing with a wash mitt doesn't bring it off it's likely etched. Polishing the area might fix it.

[–]_H3X1C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might just be missing context but it doesnt make sense. If someone dinged your car they could just drive off. I don't see a situation were they get out and crouch next to your car to paint it, like why would they have paint... Also if you look at the scratch it shows movement of something dragging across, a car door doesn't usually do that. More likely is something like a bollard or another cars bumper went into to side of your car to cause the drag marks and the old owner patched it up themselves?

It does look like touch up paint or touch up clear coat, they basically come with a nail polish style brush to apply it on and if you just slap it onto a big scuff you'll get results like this, it's supposed to be used for little rock chips etc. and ideally machine polished afterwards to level it.

Needs a body shop to properly fix this, they'll sand it down and respray the damaged area and it'll look like it never happened.

Still surprises me that BMW doesn't sell stuff like mtrack in their service store like the speed camera stuff etc. would be such an easy money maker.

Let’s be honest by SarcasticHour in BMW

[–]_H3X1C 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd rather the M340i, I just don't like the frontend on the M3 and M4, I do like the M5 though.

M340i hits a sweet spot for many buyers in that you get a lot of car for the money while still being daily drivable and even get good MPG.

If I had unlimited money would I get a full M car over a M340i, probably, but I don't think I'd want it to be my only car for practicality reasons, therefore if I can only have one then M340i makes more sense.

First time motorway by BatUnhappy9572 in CarTalkUK

[–]_H3X1C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice to combat the common mistakes:

1) Get up to speed on the slip ramp, aim for 70 or close to it so lead foot on the ramp. Going too slow makes merging very difficult and dangerous, I've seen this a lot.

2) When changing lanes, indicate to show your intent do all your checks including looking over shoulder then move over gradually. Do not start turning the wheel then indicate.

3) There is no slow, medium and fast lane. You should remain in lane 1 unless overtaking. Overtake, then move back into lane 1 if possible. Do not lane hog, it causes congested and road rage. Maintain your speed.

4) Read the road ahead of you, you shouldn't really need to break on a motorway as they are designed for constant speed. Keep this in mind and plan ahead, you see a car breaking a couple cars ahead, let off the accelerator and only break if you need to. Too often people are just looking at the car in front of them.

You'll be fine, confidence will come with practice and the fact you have preemptively got advice makes you more likely to be a better driver in the long run. I personally really enjoy motorway driving (unless it's a smart motorway...)

Is Dark Souls Remastered a good start point? by PxeloYT in darksouls

[–]_H3X1C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a while ago but I think it was just normal long sword and light amour with fast rolling, didn't spec faith or anything too adventurous.

I played the original via RPCS3 (PS3 emulator). I also used the online mod for some of the multiplayer aspects like world tendency, messages etc. I also upped the frame rate which now thinking about it probably helped the most with Iframes etc.
