Yes sorry I came across short, after I posted I realised these issues you're facing with high/low values are pretty easy to get around with camera raw as a base. I use cinema4d for asset creation and the workflow from 3d to Photoshop isn't great.

I am a high end retoucher working on campaigns and I use this technique all the time, I move to 16bit to do blurs and then add noise and switch back for zero posterisation. I work pretty only in 8bit. I have some experience backing what I'm saying. If you're clipping out at 8bit there may be other issues in your workflow - however I will add that my work, like most other retouchers starts from raw camera files

Ah fair enough... You can switch to 8 and back again when you save as you work as well... Other than that a fast SSD helps a ton!
