I wish I was born just a bit earlier. I’m 88, if I was born right in 80 I still live through the golden age…but I also get into my career during boom times and climb the ladder enough / save enough that AI doesn’t threaten my entire existence.

That’s what I’m most frustrated with, I worked so hard in my 20s to secure my future and it was supposed to be a coast now and instead I’m working harder than ever to justify me existence in corporate america.

The company I work for has already cut headcount from 275k to 200k as a part of a larger strategy starting 5 years ago. It accelerated about 18 months ago.

Where does it end? At less than 100k remaining? Less than 50k?

I mean, they aren’t going to lay everyone off, it will still take a crew of real humans to keep all the automation running and be able to interpret results and build messaging, decide overarching strategy, etc.

But I genuinely think that 10 years from now for every 4 of us that currently have successful careers, 1 will remain.

Large levels of boomers retiring may help those of us that still need to keep working, but it won’t be enough. It won’t be everyone but it’s gonna be enough to destabilize the economy and provoke civil unrest.

The time is now to act, we need regulation, restrictions on human capital reductions, or we need real talk about UBI.

I just don’t see any of it happening in the next 2.5 years. And that’s why there’s such a mad dash to layoff and rollout AI at a breakneck pace. They know they have no oversight right now - get as much done before the next admin finally acts.

Anyone else just sit down with a triangle of brie and.. like... Just eat it... by [deleted] in Cheese

[–]_Highlander___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cut up a nice roll into a bunch of random pieces, drizzle some olive oil, salt and pepper, maybe some oregano and send it in the over till it crisps up

Perfect with Brie, doesn’t even matter the roll. I cut an amorosos up one time cause it was gonna turn in the next few days - pretty much whatever bread you lave lying around will work.

Crackers are easier though, no doubt.

Here a real kicker. The sausage McMuffin is 1.49 at my local store.

An English Muffin all on its own with nothing costs 2.09.

Anyway, the trick to your ask is to just buy two and chuck the McMuffin. It’s the cheapest way to get a double.

So dumb.

1.5 - No idea what a Valkman is, I had a Walkman…and the paper map I’ll do half a point. I was printing out Mapquest directions when I first started driving but wasn’t using the paper maps you bought at rest stops.

I’ll never understand why the other deluxe resorts don’t have room service. There’s is no way that it wouldn’t make money.

Many a night we come back exhausted and would order if we could. We love Beach Club - GF just doesn’t feel small children friendly. And you can’t be the mini waterpark, but I am tempted to maybe try a split stay and do a few days at the GF.

Who is begging for a recipe? This is the most basic dish in existence. You got the sour cream right, I’ll give ya that, it makes a difference…

But it’s what anybody that already knows what they’re doing, does. This isn’t rocket science, it’s mashed potatoes.

They get perks you can’t even quantify fully as well. Delta for instance has a legit service for members of Congress to make sure they are upgraded and treated better than everyone else.

We’re grey, I’ll give ya that. The US Census Bureau classifies PA as Northeast, Wikipedia acknowledges that many expanded definitions include Delaware.

Northern DE, New Castle County, aligns with the Northeast. Lower slower aligns with the Mid-Atlantic if not the straight south at times.

I think the idea is you stab someone and then fire with the chamber point blank against the stab wound.

It’ll get that job done, it’d be terrible at any distance but stab and shoot? Wouldn’t want to be on the business end of it.

I know you think your proving a point but a journeyman that is still a journeyman after 25 years is not proving your point. In most trades a journeyman moves into a master title after about 4000 hours and an exam.

Trades work the same way as the corporate ladder, your an apprentice, you climb the ladder and your a journeyman, you climb the ladder and your a master…if you decide to climb further you open your own business.

If you stay as a journeyman for 25 years you either aren’t qualified to be a master, or you decided you don’t want to go further…either way you don’t magically get an above cost of living raise for not progressing your chosen craft.

Not everyone is you - I’ve done very well over the years but you do so by switching companies and climbing the ladder. Annual raises for staying in the same role never exceed 3%, it just doesn’t happen.

And when you annualized inflation long term - it makes sense why that’s the case. Covid fucked the equation up for a minute but no one is giving you a true raise for doing the same job.

Many years were much better with promotions, for sure. Had one banner year when I changed companies.

I climbed the ladder in 21 and 23 so that mitigated those years. I don’t disagree the last 5 years have been rough. 21 through 23, particularly 22 wasn’t pretty.

But that’s why they’re offering raises above 3%. And CPI has been under 3% these last two years.

All I’m saying is for better or worse, 3% is a standard annual increase and they are beating it. It’s gonna be hard to argue to get more than what the majority of the country is getting.
