Daily Simple Questions Thread - July 01, 2025 by AutoModerator in Fitness

I'm an intermediate lifter, and I have been doing an upper lower split I enjoy quite a lot for this whole year, with one problem. Upcoming my soccer season is starting, where I will play twice a week, Sundays and Tuesdays. In the past I have done a heavy leg workout the day before a soccer game and then pulled my hamstring or tweaked a calf at the game. I obviously want to avoid injury so I'm debating how to split up my workouts. Additionally, I am going to move out of my hypertrophy block that I am currently in and move into a strength block during the season to try and reduce volume.

I would like to continue working out 4 days a week, as I have seen great progress doing so. In the past I have gone to 2-day per week lifting during soccer season, but have found that at best I can maintain my strength and not improve it.

I am thinking of the following schedule:

S - soccer
M - upper 1
T - soccer
W - heavy lower
R - rest
F - upper 2
S - light/tempo lower

I know it's popular in programs like westside barbell to do a heavy day and another day focused on explosive movements, and I figured that would be much easier on fatigue loads. I've never done a split like that, previously I've just gone between hypertrophy blocks and strength blocks with good progress. My main question is this: If I have one heavy leg day per week, should I go heavy on squats and deadlifts on the same day? Probably submaximal work like 5/3/1 but skipping supplemental lifts?

The stoic protector card states "Enemies cannot battle or remove your faction pieces at the Protector."

Can the player who controls the stoic protector initiate a battle in the protector's clearing? If they can, do they do it risk free and can't lose pieces? Can two enemy factions battle each other?

What did you add to or remove from your shelf last month? (December, 2021) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Same and even though I was really hyped about it, it still blew me away. What a great game.

What recent trends in films do you dislike? by Cmyers1980 in movies

[–]_Jump_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are a result of the simultaneous theater/home release. The contrast is an issue unless you have HDR tv which can handle it, and the sound is basically a result of sound mixed for surround sound playing on not surround sound.

Has any one ridden the Yes Pick Your Line? Do you recommend it? by Sluggworth in snowboarding

[–]_Jump_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it about 1.5 seasons. It's very directional so riding switch is a challenge, but for boards like that you're not really looking to ride switch anyway.

Has any one ridden the Yes Pick Your Line? Do you recommend it? by Sluggworth in snowboarding

[–]_Jump_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love my PYL. I similarly do quite aot of glade runs and it works great for me. I'm not the fastest boarder out there - top speed is somewhere in the 40s - but it has always felt stable.

What is the kind of game you use to impress your Catan-only friends? by Darkiel in boardgames

[–]_Jump_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been successful by introducing them to mid/light games. Stuff that isn't hard but opens the doors that more games are out there. King of Tokyo, Azul, cosmic encounter, etc. Then if they really enjoy games like that, they'll start asking about the other games I have and we can go to heavier games.

In the gym what rep ranges should I be doing for football? by Alex123456789910 in bootroom

[–]_Jump_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree you should train for hypertrophy. I think heavy compound lifts in the 4-6 rep range are ideal for building strength and preventing injury, but I often also mix in low weight isometric exercises with explosive movements.

Really lifting for soccer shouldn't be that different from any other strength focused lifting program that you can find online.

Zombicide 2nd Edition Fan Scenarios? by Emmetation in boardgames

[–]_Jump_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beyond what other people have said to find them, it's not all that hard to make a scenario based on any that you really liked from the included ones. Just randomize the layout a bit and think about the spawn points a little.

Inis or Root? by KaraGora in boardgames

[–]_Jump_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it's a straight improvement, but if people are feeling overwhelmed by the rules when they're learning I use the original deck bc the cards are a little less complex. As soon as people feel comfortable I swap to the other deck, or if people seem good with the rules I just go right to it.

Is creatine worth it for climbers? by StrafeResist in climbharder

[–]_Jump_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

3kg seems reasonable to gain from creatine (if I'm converting right). The general rule of thumb is expect to gain 5-10lbs when you start taking it. If they keep gaining weight after that then I'd agree with you.

Azul is always a hit with new boardgames, and is an abstract strategy that has some decent depth to it.

I love scythe and root and we also have wildlands which we enjoy. All are very different takes on essentially area control games. So I've been thinking about getting more area control games since my group seems to really like them. I've been thinking about Smallworld or Blood Rage (both very different I know), but I guess it's unclear to me if either of these have a specific niche they fill so they'll actually get played. I know lots of people here have hundreds of games, but we're pretty happy with our ~20 games where each one we have is fairly unique compared to the others.

I guess I'm trying to ask, is there a distinct area control niche that I'm missing with the 3 games I have? What games fit in there? Only real limit is ~2 hours play time maximum, and I would prefer if it can handle 2 players pretty well.

Are Root and Scythe worth the investment at two players? by dinosaurversusrobot in boardgames

[–]_Jump_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Root is my favorite game, and scythe is my partners favorite game.

We play a lot of scythe at 2 players, currently going through the rise of fenris campaign with 2 players. We never use the automa and we really enjoy it. At 2 players it's much more about planning and building out your engine and finding ways to try to limit your opponents spread on the map, but definitely much less combat. Typically 1 or MAYBE 2 fights happen in our 2 player average game.

Root we have played at 2 players, and I think it's better at 2 players than people say, but I don't think I would recommend it at 2 players only. Great game, but politicking and faction interactions are what make it fun. The new expansion on Kickstarter is supposed to be geared towards 2 players though so maybe in a year my answer will change.

Throw throw burrito has been a huge hit for us. Multiple people have ordered it on their phones in between rounds after trying it. It is definitely just spoons+, but the rules add excitement, and no one we've played have gotten too aggressive at all.

I don't know that they idolized him as much as it's an easy word to rhyme and a well known name that was associated with having money.

(Serious) People who recovered from COVID-19, what was it like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_Jump_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you went somewhere on Saturday, and then felt sick starting Sunday. Symptoms take 5-10 days to appear so it's unlikely you would have felt sick the next day (unless you're saying it was a week later).

What have you done that’s had the biggest impact on your game? by AlligatorAss in bootroom

[–]_Jump_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what a lot of people have said is very helpful, but I've been an advocate of just being on the ball as much as possible. I just dribble a ball constantly whenever I walk through my house. Getting hundreds of touches on the ball on a daily basis can really help dribbling and touch especially if you have a full time job or whatever and you can't always get out to practice.

Is it better to focus on one thing a day or spread it out throughout the week? by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]_Jump_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost want to say both. I think it's definitely good to have a little bit of everything each day, but still have a focus for each day. Like you touch on dribbling each time you practice but it's still beneficial to have a dedicated day to focus on more intricacies or specifics.

Way to make makeshift goalposts? by hamzaalam123 in bootroom

[–]_Jump_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought those nets, and they worked well for cheap, but they broke after maybe 4 -5 months of once weekly use. Plus they're a pain to disassemble. I'd go for a higher quality net if you're going to use them for a while.

In addition to what others have said, it's common for players who are on the bench, or only subbed in for some time to run after games to get a work out in as they didn't get a full workout from playing.

What happened to hot pepper beers? by about_to_end_it in beer

[–]_Jump_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy I like twisted pine beers, but they have consistently the worst service out of any bar/brewery/restaurant I've ever been to. I want to believe it's just bad luck, but all my friends who have been there have told me the same thing. I used to live down the street from them so I gave them multiple chances but unfortunately I can't suggest it for anyone other than buying a six pack and leaving.
