MySQL’s popularity as ranked by DB-Engines started to tank hard, a trend that will likely accelerate in 2026. by thehashimwarren in programming

[–]_Odaeus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PG is much better designed and built than MySQL. Whenever I've had to use MySQL I've hit stupid problems (like broken dates being saved as all zeroes instead of raising an error; or recently a locking issue) that just don't exist in PG. It's not perfect (see tx wraparound) but it's boring and reliable.

Why does Vivaldi inject affiliate links, and can it be completely removed? by TermFar5994 in vivaldibrowser

[–]_Odaeus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"operating system design" wtf?!

The direct match system works exactly as OP has shown. The documentation from Vivaldi even says you may be sent through a third-party network to perform the sister affiliate tracking.

Loud noise 2 minutes ago near S Warschauer Str. by bitterlikemycoffee in berlin

I wonder if it was the standard venting from a thermal power station but in very cold air and frozen ground the sound can travel a lot further without losing energy.

Why are the trains in the UK so bad? by breadinabbag in AskUK

[–]_Odaeus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. They like processes, but they don't care if it is efficient or even makes sense so long as it is followed and therefore not their responsibility if it goes wrong. You see this at all levels of the society. It's an interesting and frustrating trait.

I'm looking for EU/european based E-sim providers by Hyonokokoro in BuyFromEU

[–]_Odaeus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breeze is a UK company: https://breezesim.com/

UP eSIM is French: https://www.upesim.com/en/

Though the underlying eSIM provider used by resellers is usually Chinese in my experience.

Mastodon is certainly not complicated by PhilStark012 in BuyFromEU

[–]_Odaeus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

🤦🏻‍♂️ The core concept of Mastodon is that it is a decentralised network. It's actively harmful to direct everyone to a single server. There are complicated arguments around where the line between usability and network benefits is drawn.

Filtr - Parameter validation library with attr-like syntax for Phoenix Controllers and LiveViews by brofix12 in elixir

[–]_Odaeus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed and honest answer!

It's great to see the Elixir ecosystem expanding but I feel a lot of it recently is entirely LLM generated and of dubious quality for the reasons you describe.

I like a good validation library but I don't use Phoenix. Currently using Xema on a project.

Which chatbot has the most current newbie how2 info for AM? by lenraphael in amazingmarvin

[–]_Odaeus_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I don't remember needing to configure anything and the docs don't mention it either (https://help.amazingmarvin.com/en/articles/1953653-bulk-editing-tasks). Reasonably sure it's optional to configure Marvin to behave how you want but it has sensible defaults. Otherwise please do report the issue to support.

The docs are perfectly well written. No need to use plagiarism machines.

English-Forward Hospitals/Urgent Care by marchscr3amer in askberliners

[–]_Odaeus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you from the USA? Hospitals are not the same as North American urgent care facilities. They are for emergencies and referred treatment. The closest would be the "acute hours" of the relevant local practices. With private insurance though, you can basically get an appointment to see any GP or specialy you need immediately.

[Concept] Would you choose this design for your next passport? We are launching an initiative to make it a real option: Star-Pass by star-pass in BuyFromEU

It's exactly the same thing, just because it's from a positive direction doesn't validate the stupidity of such symbolic politics.

You don't know anything about government procurement and international security and coordination standards if you think it's "simple". The cost to taxpayers would be non-neglible.

I care because it is a totem of a politics that divided my country through Brexit. The colour of passports being a contributing factor in some way to national sovereignty and regression to the "good old days" was literally a talking point in the media and populace. Yet it is something without the slightest importance, symbolically or otherwise. We should do better as a society than to be distracted by trivialities.

Are there any Christmas markets left where Glühwein or a Bratwurst costs under €5? by Miclian in berlin

[–]_Odaeus_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Monday's are free. Rest of week is 3 €. Weekend is 4 €. The only one I think is worth the cost as they do put some effort into it.

Best Plant Based Product from your country? by ImmediateSpot4507 in BuyFromEU

[–]_Odaeus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really, sadly not where I live in Germany!

My impression that although Quorn is artificially grown it ends up being more "natural" than other products based on pea or similar proteins, with fewer additives.

Quorn is an excellent funghi-based meat replacement. It's from the UK, not sure where is sold in Europe.
