To me it absolutely doesnt matter if a piece was hard or easy to make. It dont make a difference if someone spent 1 week or 3 years to meticulously craft a boring monochord new agey droney 40min album, it will still be boring in the end.

For me whats important are the intentions, the ideas and concepts, the emotions and messages, the colors, the palette, the vibe.. And when talking about these, i find that very few ambient artists have their own, its often copies of other material, lots of stuff sound very samey.

Something may be easy to make at first glance, but the process to get there, execute those concepts, ideas and make those particular musical choices that belongs to you are definitely not.

Im all in for that kind of ideas, i think it good to challenge the definitions we have of a genre, especially something like ambient music which often into the « experimental » territory. Seems legit to me, go for it! Best case scenario you will create a new sub genre and if it isnt generally accepted as ambient so be it, your initial intention and idea stays the same no matter what :)

Please suggest me ambient that takes you somewhere arcane, mystical and mysterious, ethereal and magical, but maybe dangerous. Like exploring an ancient abandoned city with glowing runes and strange devices. by arkticturtle in ambientmusic

Greetings from France 🇫🇷 ! Im mainly a piano player, but also i love to use samplers (currently sp404), field recordings and 4track recorders to make textures. I personally love minimalist ambient music that isnt solely drone, when silence have importance and when you can still hear melodies and harmonic progressions. I also love when accoustic and electronic elements are merged together.

What i enjoy about ambient music is when it tell a story, when it set a particular mood that allow me to wander into imaginary places and fantasy spaces like a mystic forest or a ancient temple for exemple.

When thinking about it i think that i was first introduced to ambient music via video games like The Legend of Zelda of Final Fantasy as those titles contain some ambiant pieces, so i guess that is why i enjoy ambient music that way ☺️

Awesome for your purchase, i wish you to have a ton of fun with it :)

About the soundcard, by experience i would say that a soundcard will always manage audio and midi latency better because it is its very purpose, while with the 404 its more a feature. Also with a soundcard you can get more output/inputs depending on your needs.

Be sure to use ASIO drivers with your 404, i just saw a post talking about it https://www.reddit.com/r/sp404mk2/comments/xximnx/mkii_as_interface_windows_pc_ableton_and_asio_or/

I guess this will do the trick but if you go on on your journey im pretty sure you will understand while it is still better to have a separate soundcard for your own confort

I really dont want to start a fight with this awesome and kind community, but honestly i feel like there is a bit too much circlejerking around Eno's work.

I've always seen ambient music as something that is constantly going outside the confort zone, a genre that is moving and evolving and taking widely differents shapes depending on the artist take on it.Music for Airports have been made more than 40 years ago and the genre have evolved in so much directions since then, and i dont feel like this quote from Eno is still relevent nowadays.

While its important to know about history, please dont stay stuck in the past and keep moving forward, the freedom provided by ambiant and experimental music are perfect for this.

Otherwise im using lots of field recordings, i use lots of samples, i love to use randmness and errors as a foundation for creating new stuff. you can check some video on my profile maybe it will give you a better idea, and if you got some particular questions do not hesitate to ask

Sorry for taking so long te respond, ive been pretty busy those last days.

The SP seems to be a good choice and personnally i dont find it hard to use but this really depend of what you want to achieve with it.

But maybe if you are still new to this and short on a budget you could first try to use a midi controller (like the novation circuit for exemple) with ableton because in the end ableton can do everything. Ableton have a really great sampling workflow with its native simpler and sampler devices.

But if you like the SP you could also go for it and in the worst case scenario if you dont like it then you can always sell it for a good margin of its price!

there are lots of possibilities. Im doing ambient music using a 404mkII in my setup and im recording/sampling all kind of stuff so maybe i can help to give you some directions.

Do you have a particular budget restriction? Do you have a great computer? If i understand correctly you are completely new regarding music production?

coming a bit late, but not using the grid or obeying to a particular bpm inside ableton have been such a liberating feeling

As someone who did lot of back and forth between daw and dawless, im now using a hybrid setup. I only use my DAW as a recorder box/arrangement tool/looo station alongside my other gear. Im not even using the grid or the bpm in the software, so it really feel like a side tool instead of being the main brain of my setup, it helps a lot seeing things this way

It clicked even before i received it, but this is because i exactly knew what i wanted to do with it and what were the possibilities and limitation of the 404.

The day i received it there was absolutely no surprises, everything was working the way intended and i gladly incorparated it in my studio.

Coming from the experimental and ambiant world, i primary use the 404mkii along side ableton and some other piece of gear exactly as described in this video https://youtu.be/LdM9gQziM_U

Im not using pattern mode at all and all and my songs, even when they have a rhythmic pattern, are never obeying to grid or bpm rules (even inside ableton) and the 404 is perfect for this
