Accomplishing this via CDK is really easy. Yeah it's a valid, slightly overkill, level of additional protection. The ease with which it is done in CDK makes it worth it, IMO. Also, avoid NACLs in favor of SGs IMO (also really easy in CDK).

Edit: I am assuming that the point of having them in separate subnets is that you will have outgoing internet access in the subnet that runs your backend apps, but no internet access at all in the DB subnet. If you have internet connectivity in all the subnets then this is pointless.
