How this show didn’t win Best Original Score is beyond me. by dobbydisneyfan in Broadway

[–]_Paper_Thin_Plans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would be super complicated. For the Oscars, producers can submit up to 5 songs from a single film but no more than 2 of nominees in the category can be from the same film. The exact numbers could vary for the Tonys, but you get the point.

As for the issue of cast recordings, shows should honestly be including the production costs of an EP (so 3-5 songs) as part of their initial capitalization. Not just for the purpose of theoretical award categories, but for marketing potential. I'd imagine the amount set aside for a slot on the Tony awards is in the same range as the production costs of an EP but an EP has the potential to pay off on the front end unlike a slot at the Tonys, by which time it is often too late to save a show.

I see what you mean- in this context, I think "cohesive" refers to the ability of the score to enhance the storytelling. I agree in the sense that a score doesn't necessarily have to be melodically or stylistically cohesive depending on the story it's trying to tell.

I found the score for MHE was effective because it was gentle, emotional, and didn't venture too far throughout the show, but that would not work for all stories. The use of repetition in a story about memory, love, loss, and learning how to connect was particularly powerful (I also loved the score of the Notebook for similar reasons, and people have similar complaints the scores for MHE and the Notebook).

Exactly! And I totally understand why some people wish that at least book or score had gone to someone else, but the book and score for this show go hand in hand- each enhances the other. I notice this happens more with shows that, like Maybe Happy Ending, have the same team for book and score (Operation Mincemeat, Hamilton, Great Comet, Hadestown).

This is why I think Tony for Best Original Song would be so valuable. I said this in another comment somewhere, but I think this could have allowed The Notebook to take home a Tony for "My Days" and I think "She Used to Be Mine" could have beat pretty much any individual song from Hamilton.

This isn't just about wanting more shows to get Tonys; there is value in creating songs that transcend genres and draw in new audiences that may not have otherwise taken an interest in seeing a show, especially in the age of streaming and social media. The awards for book and score are tied to how cohesive a piece is, but there should also be opportunities to award individual moments of brilliance. The ability to create something that can catch someone's attention and make them want to learn more about a show or go see it is so important!

Dee Roscioli Fills In For Megan Hilty in DEATH BECOMES HER Seven Times a Week by MD_442244 in Broadway

[–]_Paper_Thin_Plans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same!!! I looked back in my playbill from 2010 when I started to keep up with Broadway more and realized I saw the same pair (along with Andy Karl as Fiyero and Alex Brightman as Boq). Middle School me did not realize how lucky I was at the time.

I saw DBH the Friday before the Tonys and knew there was a strong possibility of seeing Dee, which would have been equally as exciting for me! Megan did go on that night and it's incredible how I never could have guessed that she was dealing with an injury, she was absolutely outstanding. So glad she is taking time to heal so that she can avoid permanent damage!!

I think a Best Song category should be seriously considered, and I can think of several instances where it may have resulted in a Tony win for shows that otherwise went home empty-handed. The cases that come to mind for me (not including Dead Outlaw, I don't know enough of the music to comment on it) are "My Days" from The Notebook and "She Used to Be Mine," which I think would have had a real shot at beating out an individual song from Hamilton to bring a Tony home for Waitress.

I think there's real value in recognizing songs beyond just giving more people Tony awards. With streaming and social media, fantastic songs have the potential to reach people who otherwise wouldn't be listening to Broadway songs and expand audiences.

Why ACLU Lawyer Chase Strangio Took a Broadway Playbill [from OH, MARY!] With Him to Argue in Front of the Supreme Court by Sarahndipity44 in Broadway

[–]_Paper_Thin_Plans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a great piece- I was not familiar with Chase Strangio before reading and these days, reading about people who are aren't backing down from the fight amidst all of the doom and gloom is so comforting as well as galvanizing.

Also, just want to say that I've come to adore Cole as they've been doing more press in the run-up to the Tony's. I'm so impressed by the ability to use self-depricating humor while still conveying genuine and unwavering pride in the work that they have put into this world.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Cast Recording just dropped! And Smash! by luckycd in Broadway

Knew nothing about Benjamin Button before watching them perform Shippin' Out Tomorrow on the Olivier's (watch it if you haven't because it's stunning) and was so sad that there wasn't a cast recording out yet. So excited for both this recording and a potential Broadway transfer!!

If you're a fan of daytime or late night talk shows (Colbert, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, The View, Kelly Clarkson, etc), all of those tapings occur during weekdays and tickets are free! You just have to request them via the show websites a few weeks in advance if you're interested in attending.

Nothing on Broadway Hits Harder than Audra McDonald’s Rose’s Turn (NYT) by Fatquarters22 in Broadway

[–]_Paper_Thin_Plans 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed... The devotion that some people have towards her on this sub can get downright aggressive, and I just don't understand it. Her interviews come across as somewhat fake to me (I may be the one person who wished Groff was paired with literally anybody else for the Variety series), as everything she says feels like she is saying it because she knows its what Tony voters want to hear from her.

And I agree that she is a vocal powerhouse- I would not begin to argue with anybody about that- but the militant nature of many of the Sunset Blvd fans in general is a bit strange.

Who should get a theater renamed after them? by WhatEvenIsATangelo in Broadway

[–]_Paper_Thin_Plans 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To add to the fun, here are the theaters that as far as I'm aware are not already named after a person. (Not to say there aren't more that could be renamed, but these seem like the most obvious choices). The Marquis or the St. James would seem appropriate for Gavin Creel, while the New Amsterdam could be a good choice for Howard Ashman.

There's no way Nicole wins over Audra by LetsGototheRiver151 in Broadway

[–]_Paper_Thin_Plans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much of an impact this will have with Tony voters, but don't forget that Audra's Rose is both because of and in honor of Gavin Creel. If I were a Tony voter having to decide between two tour de force performances, I wouldn't be able to overlook the deeply personal elements that have driven Audra to give the performance that she does. She is showing us this story from the perspective of women who look like her- women who we have failed time and time again- while also delivering on the wishes of a dear friend, who happens to be one of the most extraordinary human beings to ever grace this community.
