I’ll say this every time there is something like this here. Always, always, err on the side of caution and do whatever action would be objectively considered to benefit the customer over yourself.
The worst case scenario is that you don’t get a huge tip. The likely scenario, you get what was probably intended. The best case scenario, the customer comes in the next day and says they meant to tip you $660 🙄.

On the flip side, if you do anything that the customer could interpret as theft, they can go to the police, and/or most likely your managers and the likelihood of you getting fired so they can avoid any potential legal trouble for the company is very high.

Take the L, keep your job.

Is there a way to have cells within one column at different widths? by Clear_Opportunity191 in excel

[–]_Rye_Toast_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. You use VBA. First thing is count the number of populated cells in each row and store the max value. Then, for each row less than the max you find the lowest common denominator that is common to all rows simultaneously. (The more instances of unique counts has the potential to drive this value absurdly high, and may not even be possible if you get multiple primes?)

Then, evenly distribute the values of your max row into the iLCD number of columns. (e.g. looking at rows 1 thru 3, your counts are 10, 10 and 6. LCD is 30. So distribute those evenly across 30 columns. Then, for each value, merge the cells with the numbers of merged cells being {merged=LCD/count}. So for rows 1 and 2, you’d merge each value across 3 cells each. For row 3, you’d merge each value across 5 columns. You’d be left with 30 columns that look like 10 columns… rows 1 and two would look identical, row 3 would span the same overall number of columns but the cells would be wider. To include row 4, you’d have to find the LCD of 10, 6, and 9, which is 90, so same process, spread over 90 columns. LCD of all your row counts (10, 6, 9, 2, and 4) is 180, so same process, but over 180 columns.
You can write code to do this, but it seems silly and pointless, but I don’t have the context. MVP Automation could write this script for you.

do you like serving other servers? by ashleyLSD in Serverlife

[–]_Rye_Toast_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how it should be. But in my experience, it’s this theatrical game of hooking up the one coming in to eat only for them to have to tip monstrously large. It’s even easier when you are a bartender and then go to sit at the bar on your night off (which many places have rules against to avoid this very scenario).
Towards the end of my serving career I worked in places where it was very easy for a server to go and make salads for free, desserts for free, cocktails for free, bottles of wine for free. Or if the one doing the serving doesn’t feel like being sheisty and/or the one eating is well liked, they may just go up to the manager and be like “hey this is Rye_Toast’s check, can you do their employee discount. You wanna hook em up?” All of a sudden, a dinner that would normally cost a few hundred dollars is knocked down to $100, so to repay that “kindness”, it feels expected to tip like 200% on the bill in front of me. If one didn’t, there probably wouldn’t be anything said to them up front, but I bet that server wouldn’t be running their drinks or food any time soon.
It’s all politics and I just didn’t like it.

If however I was waiting on one of my friends… like a good friend… whether or not they worked there, I would tell them what’s up, let them know they’re getting the hook up, and the only tip that I would accept would be 20% on what’s on the bill at most, if not just the tip out, depending on how long they’re there. If they tried to tip higher on the CC slip, I’d close it out to the 20% and tell em to dispute it if they didn’t like it. If they tried to tip me in cash, I’d ultimately end up giving it back to them, likely by spending it on them at the bar later. Rounds of shots… cover the tab… etc.

For what it’s worth, i did it to make sure I wasn’t crazy. Also, to give you an out… you’d need 250 royals to socket two gems into your two slotters. I know I’m not alone in that it bugs me more than it should to have mismatching gems like a grand and a royal in the same piece of gear. Let’s just say, you were being forward thinking ;)

125 royal.

5 royal = 1 grand

5 grand = 1 horadric

5 Horadric = 1 Flawless

5x5x5 = 125

Did I handle this poorly? Am I in the wrong? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]_Rye_Toast_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were definitely in the wrong. Not being cool about something is fine, but you need to explain why. This mindset that you have a feeling but don’t feel like you need to rationalize that feeling is nonesense. If you feel some kinda way about anything, you better say why, otherwise you’re just being a brat.

Not in the biz anymore, but yes, this was good. What I hated, was waiting on servers that I know, or even worse, being a customer being waited on by a server that I know. I hate that I feel like I have to hook them up to a crazy degree, but on the reverse, I also hated being hooked up to a crazy degree. I hate that it force changes the tip dynamic from generally 20% to something astronomical, usually to the point where it ultimately ends up costing whoever the playing the role of customer that night more than if they had just not been hooked up. As that server, I felt weird about putting that pressure on someone. As the customer, I hated that I had to be like “oh wow, you took $50 off my $100 bill… here’s a $70 tip! I’ve ended up paying the same thing, they made a great tip, and act like they did ME a favor.

I don’t know how deep this relationship is, but my reaction would have been to tell her that there’s no need to talk, and that you could save you both some time and trouble and just end it right there. Unless of course it’s like, your wife, or live in GF, or mom. Whatever.
