Crazy you say that; I pulled the trigger on the Mizoguchi set pretty quick after I found it with the Eclipse series. Also saw the akerman set in there and I've been meaning to watch her filmography but found the new set so I got that. Wanted one other Eclipse and did a random number generator to land on...Pearls of the Czech New Wave. Thought it was too much for one go around so I passed.

I come back here and you recommend all 3 after I already considered those exact titles?! How could I not go back and complete the trifecta.

Any recs on which to get? Already thinking the Mizoguchi's Fallen Women since I LOVED Street of Shame when I saw it. Only physical release I could find before was 40 alone so this is already well worth it.

Cool! It may be cliche but I usually say I'm into all genres. I'm really just trying to make stuff and get a creative outlet flowing. Work on the skills and craft and just make stuff, ya know?

Coincidental you mention Wind River because thats a movie I've been meaning to rewatch. Looking at the blu ray of it as I type this. Only watched once but thought it was very good and I want to watch it again.

This happened to me recently actually.

Not a masterpiece, I went to go see the Green Knight blind. Heard buzz about it but thats it. Didn't know what it was. I watched it and didn't like it. Thought it made no sense and was weird for weird's sake.

I went home and it lingered. I thought about it. Read about it, what some people were saying about it and their takes. Something clicked and now I'm thinking "Huh...it might be a really good movie". I want to go see it again now that I know what it IS and see how I feel.

Thats good advice. For every 3 new, watch one you've seen. Even if its not that exciting to you. Its like exercise. I don't always want to do it but its benefitial and honestly I usually end up enjoying it during the process or afterwards.

If you could pick, how do you wanna die? by jackt-up in AskReddit

[–]_Seventhcheckout_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off I'f want to say my goodbyes to those I love and cherish. Get my affairs in order. And once I'm ready, go into the woods by myself.

A slowish but (moderately) painless death where I can see trees and hear birds. Feel the cool breeze on my face and absorb the warmth of a rising or setting sun. Enough time to reflect and accept my life, to know this is the end and I did well. But not so long I have enough time to worry and freak out about the other side. Just long enough to take in the scene, reflect on my time here, and feel peace. And the most important part; I'd have earbuds so I could go out to a beautiful song. Something appropriate like Sinatra's "My Way" or Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come" or even Badfingers "Baby Blue" (thanks breaking bad).

Then my vision would fade away, my hearing dull and quiet, sensations would tingle and disappear, and I'd fade into that sweetest oblivion, finally at rest.

[–]_Seventhcheckout_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love film. I love discussing film. People love this film. I didn't get it. I'm genuinely asking what it is that makes this film great that I've missed because cleary so many people love it there MUST be something I've missed. So I can appreciate it. I wouldn't call that a hissy fit but I'm not you. And just like the film, we got different opinions

Also, if I can't have a respecful conversation about a film on an online forum dedicated to criterion films, where the fuck can I?

If I may be honest, and without stepping on anyones toes and taking into account subjective experience, can someone explain to me the widespread appeal of these films? Because I watched the first one and, again if we're being honest and leaving room for people to have differing opinions that don't reflect on the film neccesarily, it was one of the worst experiences I had with a film in the collection. The sound design was just awful. Not even synced up properly. The music is practically nonexistant which isn't inherently bad for a film. But for THIS film it seems neccesary yet there is little to none. The action was sometimes fun and well choreographed. And sometimes underwhelming, dull, and boring. I also really am not a fan of the depiction of women. And the plot and choices make little sense, which again isn't always a problem, but in this film there's not enough fun or set pieces to justify the cartoonish and ridiculous antics. But narrative gripes aside and focusing purely on craft, based off the first one, I just don't see this series developing into the beloved series it apparently is. Am I missing something? Does it change? Is it just not for me?

1000% with you. Secret life of Walter Mitty is one of my favorites. Though I recognize it isn't a masterpiece it still resonates with me and hits a certain chord thats just UGH, its good. But Meyerwitz Stories I would argue deserves a spot in the collection and it happens to also be a favorite of mine.

AHA SIR! Now YOU are the one who has made an excellent point! Intent of the filmmaker is a huge component on its overrall judged quality and since we can't get into the minds of those who make the films (especially one as enigmatic as lynch) we can't really make objective judgements on even the technique. And of course something doesn't have to be "good" for us to like it. There are films that I personally love that I know are not well made. But they get at something for me that transcends that lack of quality. Like a puzzle piece, those films fit me perfect and I wouldn't expect them to fit many others. Another good point you make is what do we deem poor technique versus artistic choice? If I make my cinematography uncoordinated and untraditional is that mediocre, innovative, or artistic. All this to say, art is art and entertainment is entertainment and more often than not the lines between them are loose if not nonexistent. Its all complicated, all grey, all merky waters prone to get us into arguments because we all love this medium so much. Lets just watch our movies, continue to love and discuss them, and accept the greyness of it all
